I remember at the time that Shyamalan praised Haley Joel Osment as the only child actor he'd ever known who actually had read the whole script and completely understood the story, rather than just playing scenes.

Bruce Willis never talked with his mom. She was sitting alone and he was dead in the opposite seat. His wife was alone in the restaurant, etc. Classic movie- one of best of all time

That's the one part I feel is a plot hole. Like how did he get in? He just kept knocking and eventually she opened it to take out the trash? And as he was talking to her did he not realize she was not answering him? Or communicating with anybody for that matter... my theory Is Shyamalan believes that ghosts only see what they want to see

The twist in this movie was sooo huge, and soo unexpected at the time that since then *everyone* in the movies speculates on the wildest theories how other movies could be twisted. Yet none ever came as close as this.

The reactions to this movie are always priceless. This movie is definitely up there with the greatest ending twist of all time and made director M. Night Shymalan a household name. Another great movie I recommend is The Prestige with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. If you want more from Shyamalan then some great choices are Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village.

That's three more movies where the puzzle pieces fall into place at the reveal. Sadly, by the last one you'll probably see the twists coming early … My favourite of those is still Signs, in spite of it being often dissed for being 'illogical' at some parts, which I disagree with … but let's watch it first.

LOVE seeing your shocked reactions! I was 12 when this came out and MAN the twist was a HUGE deal! Everyone was talking about it. This is a different type of ghost story. People think it's going to be a horror, when really...it's scary but it's a heartfelt drama too. Very powerful and the story and characters make this film a "not what you think" type of movie. Such a surprise. Then we got one upped with the movie "The Others" (2001) which makes ANOTHER crazy ghost story twist! =) And would never get such a good twist in a horror movie again until "Orphan" (2009) after we thought all ideas had been used...we were wrong O_O!!!

@msdarby515

Interesting facts: 1. Every piece of clothing that Malcolm wears in the movie are clothes that he was wearing the night he was shot. 2. Cole's last name is Sear.......See-er.......he Sees dead people........or Cole Seer.......with a soft c, would be Soul See'r 3. The light bulb glowing brighter at the beginning is a hint that something will be revealed. 4. Vincent is played by Donnie Wahlberg, who lost over 40 pounds and was unrecognizable as himself. 5. Shyamalan intentionally shot some scenes like old school horror flics. So the shot you referred to, where Cole and his mom are sitting at the table and the camera just pans back and forth is meant to make you feel uneasy. GREAT reaction!!

Before I went to see this movie at the theater I read a review, and the critic dropped a hint, writing that Bruce Willis gave "a stiff performance". You were right. What they used to call the 6th sense was any kind of psychic power using the mind. They called it E.S.P. or Extra-Sensory Perception and that covered mind reading (telepathy), moving physical objects with your mind (telekinesis), precognition (predicting future events), and mediumship (communicating with spirits). They used to do scientific experiments to see if it was really possible, but they never did. But it makes for fun movies.

This is such a well done movie. The twist at the end is so unexpected, then once you know you can go back and watch it again and see the movie in a whole different way. Bruce Willis character never speaks or interacts with anyone else except the kid... but we never notice this the first time we watch because it's done so well, that we just assume he does. Like when Cole comes home and he's sitting with his mother. Our brain fills in the gap but the reality is all we see is them both sitting there... they do not interact with each other at all. They did a good job with this movie.

You should watch it again and look for the color red. Shyamalan used it in the movie very selectively. Before every scene they doublechecked that there was no unintentional red in any shot. At the beginning, when Malcolm and Anna are by the fireplace, there is a great deal of red and the color palette is warm. Once they go upstairs the color palette become cooler and the only red we see is Vincent's shirt on the floor. Following Malcolm's death all of the red seen in the movie punctuates important clues about Cole and others. Anna always has something red around her. The door of the church that Cole goes to is red as is his "fort" in his room where he keeps many figurines, some with red on them, indicating this is his sanctuary. Red also indicates when an item has been touched by a spirit. It's fun just to watch it again and look for the red and think about why Shyamalan put it there.

Toni Collette and Willis were not actually speaking, tho. :) The mom was looking in Willis' direction, but they weren't interacting. Then, the kid comes in the front door. :) What the movie teaches us is that we allow movies to direct all of our attention, rather than analyzing things as they go. Example: Why does Willis not have an actual office, but just follows Cole around from place to place? What doctor does that? We don't think about it because the movie isn't making a big deal about it, so neither do we. We ASSUME Collette and Willis are speaking, because they're (not really) looking at each other, but we don't hear them talk. Magicians call this sort of thing "sleight of hand"; the director spends a whole movie doing it to us. :) This movie is a lot of fun, and Collette as the desperate mom was unbelievably good.

The first meeting was in the church, he went into the church to run away from the ghost, HIM. But when he entered the church too the kid figured he wasn't a bad ghost. As to when he is in the room with his mom. If you noticed they where not talking just waiting for him. Once he came in ahe goes straight to him, asks how his day went then leaves to cook him some food, leaving him alone with Bruce. But she never actually looks at or talked to Bruce's character only her kid.

This was a great movie. Another movie of this caliber worth watching was “The Others” with Nichole Kidman & her outstanding acting performance.

Bruce Willis' character never talked to the kid's mom. He just sat next to her and she spoke to her son when he entered the house.

Great twist, eh? Marian called it (just in time). When I first saw this, my girlfriend insisted on watching the whole thing again from start to finish, like IMMEDIATELY. I didn't mind. Great reaction as usual. I enjoy your interactions.

“She acts like a normal ghost” yes but that was an adult ghost not a child. Also a teacher. She probably knew how to talk to a nervous child.
