Just a quick look at the classic round head ratchet originally patented in 1934 by inventor Theodore Rueb for Sherman Klove and sold under the SK Tools branding.
This classic American design has been around nearly unchanged for decades and has withstood the test of time. Certainly there are more modern ratchets that offer a lot of advantages, but these old workhorses just keep on going for decades.
While not the fanciest things, often these vintage tools allow access to really high levels of Made in USA quality at bargain prices and of course you can’t have too many quality tools to choose from.

I still have my S-K ratchet fromv1975 the exact same design as that one. Back then they were the best ratchets made. I'm a retired professional mechanic since 1978. Those ratchets out lasted all other ratchets, even Snap-on. Used mine all the way to today and only had to put one head kit in it. Yeah they aren't fine tooth, but you can apply all the torque you can muster (without an extension pipe) and it will hold up. I love mine and will never get rid of it.

They’re definitely tough. Like you said, not as fine as some of the other options on the market now, but a robust tool no doubt. I need to do a video video of the extendable 3/8” & 1/2” double-sided ratchet. It’s a relatively cheap import and it’s probably only a 20 tooth or something like that. Incredibly coarse ratcheting mechanism, but when I absolutely demand something come loose or shear off it gets the job done. Kind of a nifty tool.

Yes, the free spin thing is normal. I have 7 different Sk ratchets.

Nice old ratchet. I bought 2400 dollar snap on tool kit. At 17 years old. 1980. It would cost 6 grand today.

I haven’t used much SnapOn stuff. A few wrenches and things. I mainly get Proto, GearWrench, Klein, Knipex, and now Tekton/Neiko provided the products are not made in China. The quality of the tools out of Taiwan has become excellent in most cases, but for certain things the US/German options are my preference. Just depends.

Yours may be more recent, 80s or newer. Yours doesn't have the patent number on the other side of the handle. I don't know when tool manufacturers stopped putting patent number on tools so I'm going to guess maybe mid 70s on up. I picked up some SK ratchets yesterday for a very good price. They all have patent numbers on them, one of them has the diamond brand of SK which is the original logo until the mid 60s. Then it was merged with Wayne so those tools will say S-K Wayne. But that only lasted a few years until 1968 when Dresser Ind bought them. So I'm guessing my other ratchets I picked up are 68 until 70s versions. Wish it was easier to date tools

Same. I’m so used to guns where, largely, they can be dated at least to a few years. Often down to the month, and sometimes even the exact day it left the factory. That does make them fascinating to collect, but it is a bit disappointing when other interests don’t have the same degree of record keeping precision.
