They did their job, that’s for sure. Honestly, I watched it probably two or three times and decided to never watch it again (though I kept it for years and years) cuz it just freaked me out so much. I think it’s because of the not so happy ending. So eerie.

He was amazing. Gave a flawless performance in every role he ever took. Whether a half a billion dollar epic.. or a lower budget horror movie.. he never phoned it in. Gave 100%. A testament to his deep love of the craft.

Without saying a single coherent word, he encapsulated the fear and horror of his situation. Not many actors could do it much less think of applying for such a role. Mad respect.

That moment you realize that when Violet was telling the story of Papa justify, and mama Cecile that those people at the party, actually hung the children because they had already done the spell for the first time, and Papa justify and Mama their spirits were already in the children they’d already made the switch

What doesn't make much sense is they would leave preparing the candidate so late, and leave it up to chance, they should've been adopting children and indoctrinate them into voodoo.

I recently pointed that out to one of my friends and she was like I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THAT. I'm like how could you not? Cecile and Justify swapped bodies with the kids, and when those bodies started getting old, they lured Ben and Violet in until their bodies were too old, ect. That's the point of the movie😂

@@nikkisatchel4699yes, but before that, the first switch was when papa Justify and Cecil got into the kids in the attic. The kids were in the circle ⭕️ and the mirrors around with the lights, at that point they were already Justify and Cecile

The fact that justify and mama Cecile had already done the spell so the childrens souls were in the adult bodies that got hung, whilst the childrens bodies now held justify and Cecile always will give me shivers 😭 also the ending.. i love this film

This movie holds a special place in my heart. The woman who became the great love of my life, my precious wife, chose this movie on our first date. A scary movie on a first date is always welcome. I took her to The Outback for dinner. Drove her home and got that "I want to see you again" goodbye kiss. I've never had eyes for any other woman since....it all started with this movie. I think I have a copy of it on DVD sitting in storage somewhere.

Fun Fact: The swamp behind the Devereaux house was created with CGI effects. The actual house used in this movie, Felicity Plantation, is situated inland in St. James Parish and is surrounded by farmland. The fictional Devereaux house was situated in Terrebonne Parish, which is coastal and swampy. Also, the gas station that Caroline visits has a wind chime made of bones hanging from the front entry way. They are raccoon penile bones.

Thanks for reminding this movie existed. I was just thinking of how horrible the elderly must feel to being dismissed and treated as damn near invisible as the continue to age. It is so easy to dismiss their concerns and chalk it up to advance age or deteriorating mental and physical health problems. I really feel for Caroline and Luke especially after what we come to learn...

When I realized that the kids were actually the ones that were hung and killed, it hurt me. It meant that Justify and Cecile weren’t some innocent, misunderstood people. They were selfish and evil enough to kill kids. 😢 It was definitely a plot twist that I hadn’t seen coming. Y’all’s reaction is probably the first time I’ve watched this since 2007 or so. I initially loved it, had a copy, and watched it a few times, then just couldn’t go back. The more I saw it, the more upset and freaked out I got. I think part of it is because the villains win and that makes it such a scary thought.

They tried to save them but those evil hateful people killed them anyway.. but I look at it as more of a way or survival against their owners, especially in that time..but I will say taking people’s years is wild ..I felt bad for the kids but hard to feel bad for the parents 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

I was excited when I saw the thumbnail for this. I was like 'They're gonna like this one'. Super slept on film, especially as a horror/thriller. I pretty much put the twist together when the lawyer turned out to be a part of it, and the first thing I thought about was how the old guy freaked out when she finally showed him a mirror. The young lawyer seeing himself in old man Devereaux's body. Crazy!!!

I love this twist! Because at the beginning justify and Cecelia jumped into those two white kids at the beginning before they Hung them so they actually hung their own kids tthey were brother and sister and that's how they became mr. & Mrs devroe they got left with the house justify and Cecelia never left!

This movie is in my top list of scary movies…. Could you imagine…. Half your life stolen from you… the build up to making her understand and believe then the execution of it, tricking her into thinking she was protecting herself. Left me with my mouth hanging open.

I LOVE this movie! It's such creative storytelling. The underlying tension buzzes between Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands start to finish, and it creates this low level persistent anxiety that keeps you on the edge of your seat even while being a slow burn. Brilliantly subtle acting. Great reaction y'all!

The old white couple are the children from the beginning. The spell Cecile & Justify were performing actually worked! Those children's souls were in the bodies those people lynched 😣 definitely one of my favs EDIT: so the old couple AREN'T the children from the beginning 🙃 and just when I got my 2nd like from Asia & BJ 🥲

Violet and her husband aren't the children, there's another swap in-between. When the children's bodies grew old, they sold the house to Violet and her husband and swapped bodies with them. It's mentioned in the movie that they both had strokes after selling violet the house.

This is such a good movie it makes me think of the Voodoo Priestess herself Marie LAVEAU she still famous to this day and ppl still visit her grave believing she can still grant wishes and ppl visit where her home stood that's now a shrine and leave offerings for the beautiful voodoo queen mostly left I cigar's she loved them

Yep...one of the creepiest phycological thrillers in a long time... Actually I was glad to see the 'edited' version..that way I didn't get caught up in the story ! 🤣... Voodoo a religion..hoodoo that's some scary stuff !...as a teen in New Orleans I kept myself close to home you can be sure... 🌿🌿🌿

Some folks believe if you line your door with salt or brick dust that it keeps bad people out and away. This movie was a mind bender....Caroline stumbled into a whole heap of trouble, her unbelief and big heart kept her there when she should have run for her life.

Loved where you both jumped and screamed at once, it caught me by surprise too. Crazy weird movie, voodoo always makes me uneasy, but it was a good movie, weird twists and turns. If you like voodoo movies, there's one from the 80's called "The Serpent and the Rainbow", a cop in New Orleans movie. Love you guys, be safe!❣💯

Another clue of what’s to happen, or has already happened, is that “the lawyer” tells Caroline at the beginning of the film, “I called you on a/the phone.” He emphasizes that. And Caroline looks at him oddly for just a split second and says, “Most people do.” Like Papa Justify would probably not be that familiar with modern technology or what’s going on in the outside world. Also, the old woman, Mama Cecile, looks Caroline up and down at one point and says, something to the effect of, “I’ll bet your all marked (tattooed) up…most of the young people are today.” It’s like she’s evaluating Caroline’s body to see if she wants it…creepy. Not to mention that “the lawyer,” who is actually Papa J., is eyeing Caroline all the time and even tells the old lady ( who is actually Mama Cecile ) that he basically like her/wants “this one.” These clues are very hard to miss and might only be recognized in a second or third viewing of the film.

Papa justify was in the young guy who showed Carolyn the house, Cecile was in Mrs Devereaux and the young guy was in Ben. Then at the end Carolyn got trapped in Mrs Devereaux. Crazy twists!

The runner up to this movie should be "Spell". More voodoo stuff. Affluent black family crash land (in a Cessna) in the Appalachian mountains, and discover a town run by a voodoo priestess.

I was also kinda rooting for them, but mostly because I felt sorry for how they were treated as black servants back in the day. And it IS refreshing when the villain(s) win(s), because most horror stories have a "final girl"/sole survivor. One of my Top 5 all time fav horrors!

@@maruskaehrensdorfer True. It's hard to be mad Papa Justify and Mama Cecile because they were slaves. I'm not mad at any slaves for doing whatever they have to do to survive. Most villains have legitimate reasons for being aholes and seeking vengeance on anyone who wronged them. Most "monsters" in movies are just ancient creatures in the middle of nowhere minding their own business until some stupid humans come along bothering them. Same for animals. I root for vigilantes too.

Remember the jar with what looked like a pickled baby that fell and broke? It was a tongue that is folded and threaded over. It is a practice that is believed to keep whomever the spell is intended for to not be able to speak. A tongue tie hex. That might have been what helped the old man fight some of what was affecting him in the first place. Also the collars that you see affected whomEver wore it in such way that they had no control over the bodies that their souls did not belong in.

I've been waiting for this one from you guys...I can't believe there are so few reactions to this movie...I never found more than 3 or 4. This is one of those movies that's a completely different experience the 2nd time you watch it. Did you notice that when Caroline said..."This is your spell of protection!" And Violet/Cecile said "Oh, is THAT what that is?" She had forged that spell...labeling it "Spell of protection" when it was more like a "spell of entrapment"

It’s such a great movie! Scary so I have remember to watch scary movies at night! The parents were punished since instead of hanging Justify and Cecile they killed their own children! 😮

Loved this reaction! Not a lot of people react to this movie, so I clicked on your thumbnail so fast. lol I'm not big on horror movies, especially if they're the slasher kind, but I do enjoy ones that lean more on mystery/thriller. This Skeleton Key is so good and so underrated.

This was great, I’m loving your reviews and I have a couple of requests/ recommendations for you all of which are very different from eachother and in my opinion very underrated since they’ve never been reviewed on any channels like this. The first is Chill Factor from 1999, second is Penelope from 2006, and third is Premonition from 2007. I’d llovd to see any of them that you can do even if not right away but if you want a good one to continue spooky season than Premonition would be perfect.

The mirrors would either expose Cecile + Justify true selves, or they didn't want to be reminded they were white and old, or just to add to the mystique to get her to believe. But when she held the mirror up to the patient, he just didn't want to be reminded he was trapped in the old body. You can also surmise cecile and justify either put curses on the banker and his wife, or exposed themselves to not be their true children and making them go crazy.

So glad you did this one! Somehow slipped under the reder, but is really good! 👍 Probably too late for this years Halloween, but "the Innkeepers" is a really good under the radar horror as well. A different kinda vibe, but that's what makes it good.
