The Slow-Burn Horror Of LONGLEGS

Horror comes in many forms, and director Oz Perkins has unmistakably favoured a specific style throughout his career. Not only is his father Anthony Perkins (the actor who played Norman Bates in Psycho), but his films, including The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, consistently evoke terror through a meticulous control of atmosphere. His latest offering, Longlegs, a supernatural thriller and gritty police procedural follows this pattern.

Not putting cage in the trailers is a level of restraint I can only applaud. I hate watching trailers. I hate that 95% of the time they spoil the best action, best drama, best joke, best dialogue, best scare moments so that a trailer gets "hype." If I know 75% I will watch a film I avoid the trailer like the plague.

It’s important to remember that, depending on the size of the movie and the production, trailers are usually made by an editing company that is not connected to the actual film. The larger the film studio, the less likely it is that the director had much input in the trailers at all, and the film editors almost never have any role in the trailer process at all. The trailer makers don’t get paid by any metrics of the film. They are either getting a flat fee, are hourly, or are in a partnership with a certain studio. So they are wholly incentivized to deliver exactly what the studio wants and nothing else!

I found this movie genuinely disturbing. Families killing each other does not sit right with me at all. Combined with my personal convictions that evil is real, and the Devil stalks the earth, this film left me feeling heavy and disturbed. I get others who are desensitized and laugh at evil won't feel the same way but this movie was truly disturbing

I really loved this film, my gf took me to see it and I was really expecting it to be a movie similar to silence of the lambs. FBI hunting a serial killer, which it technically is. It was visually striking and also disturbing. I haven’t been disturbed by a movie like this since the first sinister film.

A film that I find really similar to Longlegs is Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (1997), a lot of people who watched Longlegs recommended to check it out and I can say it definitely is a lot better in terms of plot and has a really, way more interesting antagonist and themes. Some may not find it scary compared to Longlegs (they nailed the creepy atmosphere), but what makes Cure terrifying is the horror committed in broad daylight. It became one of my favorite crime/horror movies ever since I saw it. Highly recommended!

No one has pointed out what seems to me the obvious inspiration of The Exorcist III, another gem of 90s horror. Those scenes of the mother delivering the dolls while dressed as a nun took me straight to the scenes in The Exorxist 3 when the old lady dressed as a nurse heads over to the detective’s house to kill his daughter with those bone cutters. This may have more to do with my mild obsession with The Exorcist III than anything else.

The hype oversold it, it's a beautifully creepy film but not by any means "the scariest movie of the decade" as some critics claim. I found it quite predictable but still a good watch for the cinematography and the true crime aspect of it.

I feel like this movie deserves better than the mixed reviews it gets. Its technically a good movie, its an entertaining movie, it has a style to it instead of being cookiecutter, it isnt predictable, filmography is great, the preformances are good, theirs many deeper things going on in the background alot of people dont notice.

I liked the film, watched it twice at a drive in recently. The investigation turning darker and finally getting to see nick cage only for him to kill himself but his influence lingers. I liked the idea for the dolls seeing as it uses the idea of "The Kings Pact", the rule that says that the devil cant directly influence man and so he corrupts indirectly, preying on the weak. "Bow down, get real down and do the dirty work" wonderful horror film.

Watched it with my boyfreind, both of us pretty casual horror fans. We loved it. The theatre in our area has nicer seats and i was damn near crawling over the armrest at some points. I felt like I was going insane trying to figure it out. I do wish they went into the connection to the Devil and how the metal balls worked but maybe that is simply part of what made it so hard to shake that feeling after the film

I'm not sure about this, but I think Longlegs would breathe Satan's essence into the doll to prime it. There's a scene where he almost looks like he's kissing the doll but is more like just breathing on it. As far as the devil, I believe Dale had a hard time as a wannabe rocker in the 70's, tried and failed with cheap plastic surgery, so made a deal with the devil for fame (which he totally got).

The “funny” thing is that the movie takes place before Clinton is even inaugurated. So Bush Sr. is still the sitting President (on his way out) during the events of the film and it would be rather unlikely for Carter to already have a picture of Clinton’s official portrait in his office.

Creepy doll..creppy devil scene and the eerie atmosphere really test my heart..i feel the tension and tense that Lee experience.. The only problem in this movie (for me) was her mother lack of screen time and interaction with her daughter..i want to know how she keep the secret from her daughter.. i also want to know where that metal ball came from(myb given by the devil or longlegs just cast the spell in it).. Otherwise..this is a solid 4/5 horror crime thriller movie.

I agree the overexplaining at the end wasn't ideal. I think if they were trying to show Lee's memories returning, her blacking out was a perfect opportunity to go back to her perspective like at the start of the movie and show rather than tell - show the conversation between longlegs and her mother, maybe with some voiceover from the mother as if she's whispering to her in her slumber or something. As for Lee not telling her boss about the letter she got, it was pretty explicit that longlegs was threatening her mother's life and she has no reason to doubt he's capable of it. It's also possible the doll influenced her.

I would say that is true, because an agent is likely always going to have a fully loaded gun. I believe she only shot twice. The reason Lee's doll could be shot was because that is part of Satan's plan for her The reason she cannot shoot the doll at the end ... also Satan's plan .... likely for whatever comes next This whole movie is just Satan having a ball killing/torturing people with this elaborate plan .... with a flourish at the end where Lee thought she was the hero but was a pawn all along. Satan ended by making Lee kill her own mom who spent her life killing families (and forced to watch) to save Lee's life. Even forced to kill her own boss to boot. "Hail Satan!" - * smooch * (Longlegs)

The ending was so bad for me. You’re telling me the FBI let Harker into the field after she just saw a man headbutt himself to death, and that was immediately after she learned her mom may be involved? Not only that, but they allow her to go with only one person, and that person lets her go on by herself?? Also, after Harker got all of her memories back and learns that it’s the dolls she just straight up lets Carter murder his wife. It’s so frustrating when competent characters do dumb things because the story needs them to.
