I don't know if you would be interested in converting a creature from videogames into D&D 2014 5e. But if so I think it would be awesome if you could convert from Dragon Age Origins & Awakening the Darkspawn & their "Archdemons" into D&D.
Hey Dungeon Dad, being the expert you are i was wondering your advice to convert your older chromatic and ferrous dragons into the 2024 rules that the chromium and nickel dragons are
If I had a nickel for every time a dragon polymorphed into a human and married one of my party members, I’d have two nickels. Which…isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice, right?
A few other things about Nickel Dragons: Their very presence is considered corrosive, both physically and psychologically, and thus prefer treasure that’s highly resistant to wear. Despite their draconic egos, they obsess over past mistakes and failures; be it their own or others. Getting dirt on a Nickel’s ancestry is a dangerous gamble, but it could save your hide.
New idea, the dragon war was to get rid of the radioactive metallic dragons like iridium and so forth. While I didn't see Titanium, they could've been one of the MIA or casualties from the war
@@OGrupxe We just do variants of Godzilla's breath over the years. Glowing mist, energy beam, more fiery energy beam, starts out a bunch of flames and turns into a cutting laser, long charge up, but one heck of a big boom...
Fighting Technetium, Actinium, Thorium, Protactinum, and Uranium dragons sounds beastly. Never mind Neptunium and Plutonium. And notably missing ferrous metals are Magnesium, Vanadium, and Titanium.
@@OGrupxe Them and the other irradiated dragons, though powerful, have the lowest birthrate amongst the dragons. Personally, I believe it's due to the mishmash of energies they use, being necrotic, far realm, positive, and a tinge of annihilation. That, and the ferrous dragon's more dominaty than usual (for a dragon) was likely another factor that led to their possible extinction .
@@OGrupxe picturing it like a line-/cone-based disintegrate that takes a turn to set up. maybe the lair has traps/difficult terrain to make clever positioning crucial to avoid instant death.
Funny thought I had, was a nickel dragon shapeshifted as a human that was introduced as a short, scrappy, brawling trouble maker. Nicknamed as: "The Knuckle Dragon"
One other thing I remember about Nickel Dragons during my research on them is that, like all Ferrous Dragons, they are incredibly family oriented, but whereas the other Ferrous dragons that extends only to immediate family, the Nickels are more clan based. They keep tabs on uncles, cousins, grandparents, sister-in-laws, all that stuff; and they tend to live in close vicinity to each other, which makes it very easy for them to call in reinforcements should things start to turn sour for them, so a protracted fight against a Nickel dragon can very easily turn into a rout against five or six Nickel dragons.
I like the idea that they got the evil part of their lawful evil alignment because they hate being lawful, and love making a mockery of the law by following it to the letter.
But that would defeat the purpose of the AntiPhoenix. There is only one AntiPhoenix, it is on that page, and when it dies in a game you're not supposed to use it ever again. "There is one AntiPhoenix and only one. It's written on this page there is no other. It came alive when you read these words. You can use this Black Phoenix in your game. It's the only one you'll ever get. When it dies, if it dies, tear out the page. Its printed with a perforated side. Take it outside. Burn it. There can never be another AntiPhoenix in your game, or any of your games, ever again. Things find their meaning in their end. For a thing to live it has to die. For a thing to exist there has to be not-exist. No end, no meaning. The AntiPhoenix is the end. Final and irrevocable. When it dies even the terms used to describe it will fall like old leaves."
I can't remember exact details. But in DnD there is this Slime like creature, could be an Aberration or Ooze, I remember reading about. It digests a creature, but leaves the nervous system and brain completely intact. Basically a horrific slime suit ypu can't live without. In lore it is speculated that they were created by Mind Flayers.
Ah yes, the gibbering mouther. Also, once your nervous system is melded, it is effectively permanent and you are not dead. Only stuff like wish can fully restore you.
@@sterquiliniis7583An Ooblex actually kills the victim or dominates it. The monster I am talking about actually keeps it alive with it's awareness intact. Digesting everything but the nervous system. In terms of appearance imagine a translicent slime monster with a nervous system inside.
@@sterquiliniis7583 Just to be clear, is there a specific type of Ooblex which doesn't dominate/eat it's victim? I know there are several types, but the creature I am referring to spares the brain cells, while eating everything else. In it's lore it was created by Mind Flayers to basically be a semi-sentient Mind Flayer lunch box/refrigirator, keeping all brain matter alive to be eaten later.
As I just started brewing mead at home, I got an interesting idea for a dragon. What if the dragon had some bee aspects to it? What I think: obviously some yellow and black(although maybe more like a yellow body and a black stomach, or vice-versa), a stinger, they are social and lives in colonies(but are still independant, so not eusocial), and of the size of wolves.
Another dragon video another time to suggest coverage of the hoarder dragon! Since its spooky month why not cover a dragon that was so greedy that the dragon's spirit ends up possessing their hoard.
2:25 Now I'm imagining that the survivors of the civil war (and its aftermath) viewed the whole thing as so lawless that they needed a strict rule of law to prevent anything like it from happening ever again, meaning the whole hierarchy and lawful culture could be a direct response to the war that almost destroyed them.
Super Facinating! _7_ more Ferrous dragons that _not less that TWO_ types got wiped??!? Best part is these facts can be a fun lore dump OR a crazy campaign plot hook!
Awesome! Love them diming nickles😄 Its strange theres no original tin and zinc dragons🤔 Copper mixed mainly with either of those give brass and bronze. Would love that you cover gem dragons in the future🤘 An overview vid of the 5 known and later the mysterious/ less seen: Ruby, obsidian, beljuril, jacinth, citrine ( original ) pearl, amber, jade, moonstone. Three last are more like cousins to true gem dragons. Moonstone isnt truly gem. Pearl and amber are organicly made by clams and trees😆
Thank you for this one! I've been using the Ferrous Dragons in a storyline in a Westmarches campgain world in a Discord server, and while the Cobalt are my current targets, I was planning on either Nickel or Tungsten next, so this is great timing (for me!)
Cool dragon and good video, but idk, I feel like the updated 2024 statblock still feel less interesting in some regards. Maybe it's just me but I do miss the lair actions and legendary actions. Anyone suggestions?
I love that we finally have all of the Ferrous Dragons and the forgotten Chromatic Dragons, but is there any chance we might get your take on the Orium Dragon as well? By all accounts it's a Metallic as well, and really unique, so I'd love to see what you do with it! Similarly, there are several Gem Dragons that got left behind, most notably Obsidian and Ruby Dragons. I'd love to see the gaps in these big families filled in fully in your style, because it's always spot on, and the new art work that comes with it is always top notch. Especially with the huge makeover that Gem Dragons got in 5e, it'd be cool to see a matching interpretation of the other Gems. Either way, thanks so much for yet another amazing dragon statblock and lore dump! Can't wait to see whatever you have up your sleeve next!
These are cool little buggers...I honestly would want to make them even smaller or swarm-y 😅 It goes against the established lore, but I like the idea of flashing silvery scales darting around a party and needling at their HP with acid, confusion, etc. Favorite pastry? Oooh, very tough question....if I could narrow it down to 2, probably a pastel de gila or a znoud-il-sit. There are so many tasty ones out there though 🤤 Thanks as always, Josiah! 💜
I’d like to see a video on Glow Dragons. They’re only featured in the Gamma World books (as far as I know), have serpentine bodies, a maw like some kind of mutant spider, and radioactive breath. I’d love hearing your take on them!
Now that you’ve covered all the extra chromatic, metallic, and ferrous dragons I am very curious to see your take on Obsidian Dragons and all the eastern dragon varieties that have been written for regions like Kara Tur
Another reason they could have shifted towards evil from chaotic neutral is that if you gotta be lawful, being evil still lets you get up to shenanigans
It would be kind of cool if you tried to come up with what the other Ferrous dragons are/were. Or maybe make your own kind of metallic dragons. Those would be fun! I would also not mind seeing an update on the other dragons you have done with the new way their stat blocks are done. That would be a lot of work though.
A bit of a variation on one of the plot hooks. A town hires the party to deal with their local dragon problem. The thing is that they can't seem to agree on much, only that the Dragon has a corrosive breath and it has two long horns on it's head. The reason is that, the players are really going to be walking right into an ongoing fight between a Black Dragon and a Nickel Dragon. With the Black Dragon's help, the party can defeat the older Nickel Dragon, but the reverse is true and the Nickel guarantees to leave the party alone as they leave after. The party is not strong enough to handle slaying both at the moment, so they get to choose what is the lesser of two evils.
Now that we’ve gotten through all those dragons, I can’t imagine a more perfect time to tackle the Anglerlich, a cosmic fish from Veins of the Earth that creates villainous “lures” to trap heroes and consume them!
Still would love your take on some of the Extraplanar or Epic dragons. My favorite being the Time Dragon, a dragon so strong in 3rd edition that its babies clock in at cr 20. Force dragons are cool because they start off as just dragons but eventually just become invisible because they’re literally see-through living force(like a sentient dragon shaped wall of force). And the rust dragons that are possibly tied to the existence of rust monsters.
Someday I'll get that episode on Topiary Guardians... Also, my local grocery store has these really banger fruit-filled strudel bites in their bakery. Those are my current favorite pastry.
Since it's Spooky Season, there's a monster I know of that I think would be appropriate. It's from the Monster Hunter games, and it's known as "Vaal Hazzak." It's a dragon wearing the rotting corpse of a slightly larger dragon, and its breath weapon is aerosolized flesh-eating bacteria.
Nice to see the ferris dragons completed would be sad to see it end but I know that there will be another crazy dragon or group of dragons right around the corner
PF2e has a creature I love using against my players called the Nonsequitaur. It doesnt have lore but it is a new level of unhinged chaos in stablock form.
I actually came up with a dragon that is also one size category smaller than is typical. I referred to them as the aluminum dragon, they generally live anywhere which is wet, think Ireland or Oregon. They are neutral good, and on the metallic dragon, most attached to kobolds.
the fact this dragon shares habitat with black dragons could work as a plot hook as well. Imagine one of these guys reaching out to the player characters trying to recruit them to defeat/drive off a black dragon from their territory/help taking over a black dragons territory.
If I had a Nickel for every PDF version that the Patreon Members had access to for this monster, I'd have two Nickels, which isn't much, but totally normal that it happened twice, because that's what Dungeon Dad does.
Since you said any game, I'd Love to see fully stated enemies from popular games through out the ages. Id think Doom demons would make a fun series to explore.
You know, with the "missing" ferrous dragons, it's possible that the Steel dragons had been a part of the Ferrous dragons, but either tried to stay neutral or just outright defected to the actual metallics at the time. Though several things that popped up there might also point towards them being more aligned with the Gem Dragons since their lore puts them at more of a true neutral basic alignment that fluctuates with their different mortal lives
Are there any campaign books that are themed around the Ferrus Dragons? Because it would be fun figuring out how the different castes in their ranks and how they act works as a political system for a full-on campaign.
How would you transfer the statblock back to 5e (2014)? I'm not interested in a 2024 version and would like to keep that neat spirit of yours, Dungeon Dad.
Tbh most of it would be the same, I would imagine. The only thing you need to worry about is translating the multiple Reactions back into Legendary Actions when applicable.
Sense now that you fniished talking about Ferrus dragon I was hoping that you will talk about Lung dragons next. I was wondring about D&D's take about eastern dragons.
A creature I always wanted to see in DnD is MTG's Slivers. Theyre weird insectoid guys who have one claw and all share abilities with each other so they get stronger the more varied types of slivers you play.
I know this seems a bit forward of me, for i am but a humble servant. We need the Heavy Metal Dragons to be spawned. "Lead, Uranium, plutonium, palladium, etc. Just let it sink and simmer in your mind for a bit. I look forward to every single video with a passion, you make my live a little bit more enjoyable for a while with each video. thank you.
Writing this around the release of Metaphor ReFantazio, because I'd like to see Dungeon Dad's take on the "Humans" featured in it. They are freaky, have something to do with people being anxious, and I honestly think they'd make for some bizarre things for a party in 5e to go "WTF?!?!" about.
My idea is that the 'civil war' against other ferrous dragons is a case of lost cause myth. The truth was that the iron dragons led an uprising against the other metallic dragons and failed even after the nickel dragons swapped sides. The reason they don't want to talk about the other five is that it would unveil their revisionist history of them being a failed splinter faction of metallic dragons. As for the the two extinct species they are only considered that due to how elusive they are.
Idea for a CIFAL version of a Dragon. AJ Picket just had video on the CIFAL (Colonial Insect Formed Artificial Life) from the 2nd edition Fiend Folio. The CIFAL a humanoid made of an insect swarm, but I can see a similar Dragon shaped swarm insect forming, if it's made of biting flies you could call it a "Fly Dragon." Instead of having a breath weapon it simply engulfs it's victim, so a "Fly Dragon" made of mosquitos is draining from EVERY exposed piece of skin that a mosquito can fit on. You're welcome, the nightmare fuel is on the house.
A funny wholesome version of the draconic political intrigue plot line: The other ferrous dragons suspect a nickel dragon of treachery and send the player to find out what they are planning, and maybe even stop it BUT, the plan is actually something harmless, the nickel dragon might even try to convince the players to help without revealing their plan (because habitually sneaky), but it’s the equivalent of trying to get some recognition through a new discovery
