The smallest waterfall i've ever seen !!!

In this video we visit the Levenshulme waterfall in Manchester. The smallest waterfall ive ever seen. Its actually a small weir but the locals have called it a waterfall. It is situated on the Fallowfield brook and the weir served an old Victorian bleach works. The Fallowfield brook at this point is running through a place called Highfield country park in Manchester. It used to have a brickworks and a farm in the area. The brickworks had lots of clay pits around it. Highfield park is now a nature reserve. We also take a look at the route of the Fallowfield brook one of 'the lost rivers of Manchester' and see where it joins the Platt brook. We also take a look at a pet cemetery that is situated in the park.

I remember my Grandma telling me how my Dad went playing with his friends at the Brickie - very much against all instructions! Then how she and my Granddad went for a walk on Sunday evening and caught my Dad and his mates there. I think my Dad could still feel his punishment on his backside when he passed away aged 92!!

Brilliant video again Martin! As a kid in the 60's, before all the housing, you could see Fallowfield Brook emerging from under Yew Tree Road to join with Platt Brook. What is shown as a cricket & football ground on the old map where the two brooks meet was, in those days a pig farm. We used to scale the fence and explore where the brooks joined. Platt Brook used to run open across the farm, down the side of the railway to Hough End, where the name changed to Chorlton Brook. 👍🙂

Great little vid 🙂 Loved the pet cemetery bit. BTW, hope you had the Stroopwaffles how they're meant to be done (so I've been told, and had them as such ) by placing them on top of your mug straight after you've brewed up, just like a lid and leave them for a bit so that the filling gets warm and melts. Dead tasty 😋

A great video, my neck of the woods Fallowfield/Withington! My mum remembers the pig farm that was by the brooks. They moved into Bowdon Avenue in the 70's from Longsight, I went to St Kents School personally! It is interesting to see the old map of the area also with Yew Tree Rd (we lived on Yew Tree Rd by Rippingham Rd park when I was a kid) and Wilbraham Rd not yet meeting up!

Another great Manchester video that you've done with James, Martin. How things have changed in that area, when you compare the old and new maps. I never would have thought that there was open ground like that park in the Levenshulme/Longsight area, and a pet cemetary to go with it. It's interesting as to where the brook goes and disappears under that estate. Look forward to a later program on that one. Many thanks for this film, even though short, really interesting.

You should definitely do one on Abney hall in Cheadle, it has a waterfall that is apparently haunted by a dwarf ninja lol. It also has the hall that was apparently the place Agatha Christie went into hiding to escape fame as she was friends with Lord Abney. Legend is that the railway bridge at the entrance gave her the inspiration for ‘murder on the orient express’ I know you like your trains, they have the nameplate on the wall of one of the ‘hall’ class locos on the wall, you guessed it ‘Abney hall’. There’s also a pet cemetery where the lord buried his dogs.

Crazy to see you do a video right next to my house, and not on the rail line either. There is little evidence of the old factory on the path you walked down to the weir. Bits of brickwork and wall half buried beneath the muddy path. Highfield Farm, lasted until the 90's remember taking the dogs there when I was a kid. Was a kennel at that point. Sadly it was destroyed in a fire however you can still find the gate post marking the entry to the old pond off the track that runs by the stream.

Nice goin Martin, James an The Scruff [good to see him], that was intriguing particularly with the Aircraft Company Rds of Avro and Sopwith even Martlet, was an aircraft name. Makes me wonder if the area had aircraft manufacturing. Ya gotta watch those young blokes, always dashin in. Hope it was anything more permanent that bruised pride. Thanks for the Pet Cem visit, nice they are remembered. Pity stone headstones cost so much, people oly do it for people, and the pet oned are done by the owners. Found this online relating to the curved brick probably from the brickworks kiln..... "This is a firebrick, manufactured by Poultons of Reading, and would originally have been installed in an industrial kiln, probably for making pottery. Poultons closed in 1908, so this is well over a century old. The firebricks are relatively uncommon - one was recently uncovered while building Crossrail, the first to be found in London. Our firebrick presumably ended up at Highfield when it was the local dump, and connects with Manchester’s industrial past."

There are a few references to this inscription on the web with pictures, but it seems to refer to the makers of this particular shape of brick, and not anything to do with the pet cemetery (unless perhaps there was a plaque on the other side, maybe).
