Gaming got to where it is nowadays because of the casual audience because it is much easier for a game company to market and sell any video game to the largest possible audience, not the niche 1%. 99% of people who play video games are NOT elite professionals at the game they play, do not compete for money, do not play on a team, and are not sponsored by organizations because of their elite level of play. Hardcore gamers was and still do make up about 1% of the gaming audience and will continue to do so because most people who play video games play it as a hobby and/or for fun; as an escape from their regular day to day life from school, work, and so on. Nintendo understands this philosophy very well, and that is why they market their games to the demographic that they do. Sakurai has gone on record multiple times saying that Smash Bros is not a competitive game because he did not design it to be played in that way; it is meant to be played in a casual setting. If the creator of something says that his creation was designed to work in a certain way, that is what it is supposed to be known for. But like every creation, people will always find a use for it that was not intended. It is interesting how people have managed to find a way to make smash bros competitive; the only way you can make melee competitive is if you turn off nearly everything that makes the game what it is, such as items and modifiers, and only play on a select few stages with certain characters. In other fighting games, likes tekken, street fighter, and mortal kombat, you can start playing in a competitive setting immediately because the game is designed to be played in that way; you can pick any two characters, do not have to modify any settings, and can fight on any stage. Most importantly, the companies that make these games actively encourage competitive play whereas Nintendo shuns it completely. The "competitive" smash audience will always remain in the minority for Nintendo because they will never buy into the idea of smash bros being a competitive game. Nintendo, like the majority of people who purchase and play smash bros, see it as a casual sandbox fighting game that you play in the same room with friends and have fun with. While it is great that the minority that is competitive smash players are enjoying their time playing smash competitively and get to play on stages like EVO for a lot of money, it will never go anywhere because Nintendo does not want to ruin the family friendly brand they have built over the last 50 or so years. Nintendo believes that competitive play does not align with how they view what 'family friendly' means.

+Metaknightmare Milktea is honestly too biased in saying that. After everything that's happened, Melee is no longer a party game. It's solely a competitive game. Smash players, especially Melee players, look down on casuals playing Melee. They took it to a level where it can no longer be what Sakurai wanted.

+Hector Gonzalez I don't see how it's biased at all. nothing is stopping people from playing it casually, I have friends who still do from time to time. and if you say that competitive players completely destroy casuals, well what else is new? anyone who invests time and effort into getting good at a game gets better at it compared to people who play it from time to time for fun. my point is nothing stops people from enjoying it casually, and if people stop playing it as such that's their own choice and not the game's fault for being competively viable. for instance look at any other esport like league or csgo: people still play casually for fun even though others play competitively for money.

Metaknightmare The people that I know that play Melee play it competitively. That's the main concern, once you start, you don't go back, at least from the people I hang out with. To me, the casual audience grows a bit and then fades as those casuals turn into competitive players. They also get turned off by the harsh attitudes that the competitive community has towards them, leaving them to think that they shouldn't even bother to play the game,
