Jimmy will always be my favorite drummer but out of their replacement drummers this guy was def decent and his drum set sounds amazing in this performance.
i’m guessing because of the circumstances, he didn’t get much notice and time to learn SP songs and practice with the band. so that’s kinda impressive.
Yes he was drumming for Filter when they supported Pumpkins on the Mellon Collie tour - I caught them at Wembley and both bands were awesome, pretty sure he was the drummer at Glastonbury 97 too. Really good, understated drumming.
4:54 when they break into 'Where Boys Fear to Tread' raises goosebumps all over my body. Awesome! Fark that. Everything here is outstanding Pumpkins. What an amazing start to a gig.
He was definitely joking when he said that, as since then he has said the exact opposite going as far as to say he considers himself more of a guitarist than a singer. There was once an interview where he talked about how he would write the vocal melodies on guitar and then figure out how to sing them.
Just do not be dumb like Chester and Chris Cornell and off yourself Billy. So silly of them along with Kurt. The music is remembered, the way you perished is not. Thank you in advance. Prayers up.
Imagine seeing these guys in heaven playing stuff like this? I can. It is going to be fun IF there is some kind of afterlife. I say this from China as a Canadian living with 1.4 billion atheists. Hmmmmmmm. I choose to believe in heaven and the Pumpkins live and so much else that will bring us all pleasure. Music is the currency, no art form really matters outside of superb literature.
Wow this might be the only Pumpkins song I’ve heard in an odd time signature (6/4 isn’t that odd, but still)... just realizing that. Weird considering Jimmy is a jazz player and the only time I’m hearing it is when he’s not there.
@@LeatherCladVegan Where Boys Fear to Tread, yeah. But that intro (‘Glimpses’ I guess) is not 4/4. 6/8 isn’t uncommon, “Once Upon a Time” is another example. But 6/4 is a completely different rhythm.
Smashing Pumpkins (I actually never understood why they changed their name to *_The_*_ Smashing Pumpkins_ after _Siamese Dream_ . Never made sense to me ... ) sure had some of the darkest, most angsty songs of the 90s in their repertoire - they always had a more "gothic" touch than all those "merely" angsty Seattle bands - I mean, hey, they basically made music to stare at your feet to. But man, do songs like "Where Boys Fear to Thread" make me feel warm and fuzzy inside (the dark kind of fuzz, that is). Basically childhood memories to me. But the studio recording of this song, which also contained the _DooM_ sounds just makes me gleam with 90s nostalgia. PS: That ring mod, that Billy uses at the beginning of "Where Boys Fear to Tread" sounds absolutely sick!
Stephen Kelly Hmm, true. However, it's still kinda funny, since it actually changes the meaning of the band's name. _Smashing Pumpkins_ refers to the act of smashing pumpkins (into small piles of putrid debris... whoever gets this one wins my internets!), while _The Smashing Pumpkins_ would refer to pumpkins bearing the attribute _smashing_ ...
Or they could be referring to themselves as "pumpkins currently undergoing the process of being smashed" the smashing pumpkins. Imagine slow mo pumpkins on sidewalk. Course it could be taken as "wow, that pumpkin is simply smashing!!" Referring to someone's skills at carving? Lol I like all the ways it can be taken with & without the "The"
Andrew Mojzer Brad Wilks an awesome drummer but didn't fit this music imo. This guy was def their best drummer after jimmy. Way better then when John Mellencamps weird ass drummer played w the pumpkins after this guy in like 98 or 99.
Matt Walker is a great drummer, but I can’t stand his sound with this band. Kenny is at least different enough to be doing his own thing and Mike Byrne is at least technically probably as good as Jimmy, but Matt always sounds like it’s a cover band with a guy who only kinda likes the band
Love the pumpkins but this version of where boys tread definitely needs to get polished up pretty good singing was way off and this comes from a heavy metal singer. Sorry not sorry get back in the studio. Regardless, love this song, never stop playing! Keep inspiring!
