I think Billy is laughing and smiling because he's having fun with this guitar, haven't seen him with it before. So my guess is that he's trying it out.

From 5:17 onwards it's lovely to see Billy smiling at James, then D'arcy, (with her actually smiling back) then the drummer in a genuine moment of "This fucking rocks!!". I miss that.
Back in the day I was told that Pumpkins didn't sound good live, so I never went. And now I see all of these older live performances on RU-vid, and I couldn't agree LESS! I think my biggest regret in life was that I never got to see them play. Their music defined my entire young adulthood and I still love it to this day. Billy, please get the band back together. And send me a ticket. :)
moral of the story, never listen to ones opinion. I went to a concert last summer even though it was just billy and Jeff they were still amazing! & front row too! :)

This more musically subdued version really allows Billy to focus on the sublties and clrity of his vocal runs. As he usually oversings or rolls his eyes when he does this song live.

Wait what? Billy Corgan wrote all the songs and played all the instruments except drums. And once Corgan found a good drummer he made some pretty good albums. Check out Oceania and Monuments to an Elegy.
I love the Adore-era version of Thru the eyes of ruby. This is a fantastic performance of that. I honestly think this is right up there with their performance of it in aula magna of the same year. This one is more spare, which they've done some really fantastic versions with and really scratch the 'itch'. My favorite Smashing Pumpkins, showcased in true majesty. Thanks for uploading!
+brian lawless I think this is one of those rare songs where it's a tale of two different versions. Meaning whether it's bombastic or spare, it can be equally special and magical. (And you're right, there are some absolutely blistering versions of the song with Jimmy back there)
If Jimmy had still been in the band at that point there wouldn't have been an Adore era. That was a reaction to the loss of Jimmy more than it was a conscious decision to change musical styles.
Interesting version. I wonder if some of that was jammed. Billy's smile at parts reminds me of my & bandmates "someone fucked up so now we're winging it for the rest of the song" smiles :D
I'm speculating slightly, but the grape vine is running hot, with Billy stating how great it is to have his friend back and she happy, healthy and playing bass again. I'm thrilled even at the prospect
3:40 D’arcy’s part here was one of my favs from her. Just an amazing line up. Anyone putting her down should have to go on tour with SP and memorize all of this music. I don’t see a music stand, do you?
First time I ever heard D'Arcy's microphone on in a live performance, haha. I've seen her mouthing vocals many times but assumed that BIlly kept the mic off because she sang out of key. Actually she doesn't sound too bad

People...can someone explain to me! When I bought the CD that has this song, the heavy final part that is in this live version was in the studio version! Why is it that when I search for the studio version nowadays, I can't find this final improvised part? I've searched everywhere and can't find it.
He did a song on Tony Iommi's solo album. Probably the best cut on that album. If I recall lthe name of the song is "Black Oblivion" but haven't heard it in many years
