@@chrishedge887 I would say the Rickenbacker guitar was the Beatles influence on Dinizio. Both Lennon and Harrison played Rickenbachers which gave that jingle jangle sound of Sixties pop that is distinctive. Especially if it’s a 12 String. The Byrds Roger McGuinn also played one so he could get that sound as well. It’s unmistakable!
I can never get enough of proper comments like yours! I listen to Bikini Kill, Megadeath, Avalon Jazz Band, Doris Day, Repo Men, Black Flag Rollins Era, Sub Humans, Scratch Acid, Cyndi Lauper, Sonic Youth, Swans. Any recommendations?
I saw them when I was 19 years old, around 1987-89 at a college auditorium. Maybe 500 people there tops. We were right up against the stage. Amazing live show.
Please enlighten me. Who is Mike, and who is Pat? I am 63 years young and new to this fine band. I want to know more about them. I just now stumbled upon them by accident. A search engine turns up only boilerplate info on them.
The Smithereens are so underrated...they are like Cheap Trick - music fans first and foremost, realllly talented players, excellent songs with bite and huge hooks...of the people and, throwing down incredible performances of The Who's TOMMY front-to-back or, full Beatles sets just cuz they wanna have some fun...and, THEY CAN...I saw them live in 85, 87 and 90/91? and, they were louder than bombs, tighter than tight, smiling like a bunch of 12yr old kids rocking out for the first time and, totally committed to their audience and the task at hand. Lunch box guys on a rock and roll mission! RIP - Pat! He can't be "replaced" EVER BUT - Marshall Crenshaw is an excellent choice of people to bring into the Smithereens family...he is a music geek, with amazing chops who is incredibly respectful and committed to the songs that Pat wrote. He's a class act.
Watching these guys do what they always did the best, perform live, is such a treat. Within days of 27 years ago The Smithereens were at their professional best and most confident. Especially on stage! Pat's beautiful melodic voice paired with a super strong rhythm section and my favorite, that chainsaw buzzing, screaming, roaring by Jim Babjak's Rickenbacker. I just found this video and it's a time capsule that I wish I could step into. Thanks for the upload!
They cut their teeth at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick, NJ in the early 80's. Small 200 capacity joint. They were kinda the house band for a while. We didn't realize they were gonna blow up like they did.
One of the greatest rock songs and rock bands ever. The bass is killer. Excellent guitar, and the great Pat Dinizio on vocals and guitar. Rock and roll doesn't get any better than this.
They were still a great band in ‘95 (and to this day), but their peak was ‘89-‘91, when they released 11 and Blow Up. They cracked the top 40 with those two albums, but grunge came along after that, and totally changed the musical landscape. Hooks and intelligent lyrics were replaced with angst and mumbling.
For sure - they were a more popular, charting band in 1990 but I was more talking about sheer performance. They're 15 years into being the Smithereens at this stage and beyond the struggles of getting a break. Pat's voice is fantastic and they sound like an experienced, confident rock band.
Wow, I just can't stop watching. Back in the day I saw The Who, The Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Remains, Vanilla Fudge, Spirit, Jefferson Airplane, Chicago Transit Authority, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Music Machine, Soft Machine, Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc. This live performance of "Blood and Roses" blows me away and ranks right up there with the best bands of the 1960s. Long live The Smithereens. Pat DiNizio, RIP.
October 12, 1955 Plainfield, New Jersey - December 12, 2017 (aged 62)Summit, New Jersey, One year seems like a month ago.. R.I.P. - Rock In Peace.. Our beloved Pat D.
They gave a free show in Norfolk on 1997/1998 at park. I sat two feet away from them and it was an amazing show. They were set up in a small gazebo and rocking. One of the best shows of my life. PD and crew have always been one of my favorite bands.
2:04 one the dirtiest old skool guitar breaks ever - just kills me when he walks that riff and the other guitar and bass player walk up and back on the stage.
+Spencer Hart not true...they were endorsed by Ric in the 80s, they lost the endorsement, simple as that. they are endorsed by Fender now. I put on one of Pat's first shows of his first living room tour and he told me personally. Great guy, hope he gets better!
I've used "Fender custom shop strats"", for gigs, (required) , but honestly, I got a better "out of Phase sound, positions #2&4)" from and old Ibanez RG770 ! My main axe is a 73 Gibson Deluxe, Circa 73 !
Love this band love this song. But the mix doesn't sound balanced. Guitar maybe way out in front too much. Pat sounds like he's not singing right. His vocals are a little choppy. But still one of my favorites. R i p Pat dinizio
Felt the same honestly. Jim played well but it totally drowned out Pat's vocals. The bass was lacking presence, too. Appearances like this are crucial for a band and the sound engineers dropped the ball.
@mrearlygold: He's got nerve damage due to an injury, is undergoing Physical Therapy and requires surgery. At the moment he can't *use* his right hand. Sending Healing Vibes to My Buddy Pat!!
The mix was great except that there was a legendary singer that was forgotten about. I kept wondering when theyd wratch up Pats voice but it never happened.
Pat never really talked about his personal life much, but I remember hearing that when his daughter was born there were complications or something to that nature? Never really figured out if that was the case, or if the pic on his guitar was just simply proud dad moment on National tv.
Hollywood was hard at work emasculating and impugning ROCK even back then MIX SOUNDS LIKE SHIT- NO REVERB, PAT'S LEAD VOCAL WAY TOO LOW IN THE MIX- SO SUBVERSIVE.
Still the loudest show I ever went to in my life when I saw them at the Breslin Center in East Lansing maybe 1993 or so. My ears rang for days after the show.
They put out great albums- several anyway but sabotaged their career by purposely playing terribly live being drunk in interviews and doing everything possible to not be popular. Interesting band I have followed since 82
Best band ever. All their songs rocked. So f'n talented balls up, balls to the wall rock and roll. This is rock as it was made to sound. Today's crap and noise just isn't music
good god man, several years after their peak, on national TV no less. Really great performance. Jim Badjak was at the peak of his coolness on the Rickenbacker.
You guys may not know this, but in the 90s there was an Uruguayan band called Niquel who recorded a cover of this song ("Sangre y Rosas" in Spanish). Two of the former Niquel bandsmen, Jorge Nasser and Pato Dana reunited in 2017 and performed it together once again. Hope you like this hard rocker with some pretty decent hard rock moments. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hZyLZR0BNmg.html
Never knew about a Spanish version of this awesome song... Niquel did a nice job with it. Appreciated the info. I hope this song gets picked up by newer generations and keeps rockin' on live stages forever !!!
Great band, but they always struck me as the type of band formed by a bunch of dad living out their teenage rock n roll fantasies. Which is no bad thing!
