The Smithereens Blood and Roses - Behind The Wall of Sleep, live on The Tube January 30th 1987. Recorded by me on Sony C6 MK2 Beta VCR using BASF EQ L-750 tape. #smithereens #NYC #TheTube
behind the wall of sleep is an incredibly better song than anything those guys did, really all the Smithereens hits are better songs than anything by those other more famous NJ bands.
@@joejones9520The Smithereens are a great band but your statement going against Springsteens' substantial catalogue is a little silly and immature, to say the least.
@@candelise i play and sing both bands songs on guitar and i write songs, i know what im talking about..broken down to their basics Springtn's songs arent much but the Smithr. are finely crafted.
@@joejones9520 Yeah, a song like 'Kitty's Back' or 'It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City', among many others, are examples of bad song craft, yeah? By the way, you are not the only 'musician' in town.
They are just an absolutely kick ass American band. College rock, power pop, alternative rock call it whatever you will, the Smithereens are just bad ass US rock and roll.
Don't get your point? They were, for instance, heavily influenced by british pop/rock music from the 60's and don't sound like a typical US band at all. But they were a really great rock band...
Im much the same, this was the first I had ever heard or seen the band and from the start I was hooked. Thankfully my local record store had one long unsold copy of Especially for You. I played it over and over again, its still one of my all time favourite LP's
One of the greatest most underrated bands of the 80’s. I love The Smithereens. I was very lucky to see them live when I was a senior in high school back in 1995. Thank you for the video and the great memories. It takes me back to a time when talented people were at the forefront of popular music.
Totally the Truth. Pat DiNizio was one of, if not, the Best Lyricists' of this era. Plus his arrangements are nothing short of Epic. Many commenters say, and rightfully so, Smithereens didn't get their just due, but their legion of Fans KNOW how truly Awesome these four guy were. A perfect example of four excellent musical talents that epitomized the idea of "A band better than the sum of their parts."
"Underrated" is way overused, but this man and this band were totally underrated and underappreciated. I had the privilege of seeing them live at a festival in Chicagoland in '95 and I asked Pat what he was doing next. He replied, "going to a Cubs game tomorrow with my kid." Rest In Peace Pat.
Thanks again for this gem. Being a bass player I really appreciate Mike Mesaros improvisation with the last 2 bars of the solo section as well as the final 2 measures of the outro ,great movement around the neck!!
He is amazing. I first saw him live when I was about 16 and he left a huge impression. Watching this guy jump arond the stage like he was possessed was one of the coolest things Ive ever seen,
Thx Pal! I lived in Boston in the 80's- Pals of Pals, when they came to town:) They came to town, Orlando in the 90's. All I can say? Great to hear in 2022. x.
Glad you enjoyed this, like you I played it on repeat many times, bought the album, 34 years later its still one of my favourite performances from The Tube. Thanks for watching
Jim: Rickenbacker 340 in ruby; Pat: Rickenbacker 350 in jetglow; Mike: Rickenbacker 4003S Blackstar. The Blackstar was really rare, the manufacturer made only 200 of them, 1989 - 90. I've read they had a deal with Mr Hall which would I suspect make them the only group to have done that other than possibly Steppenwolf. Pat dropped the 350 early on but I've seen that Jim has used the 340 a lot ever since.

This was a great band,i taped their album from radio show in the 80s, Radio Zagreb, communist years. We weren't too surpressed... Good music was somehow always available....
I love these guys so much, i get really upset for behind the wall of sleep, it just hits me so hard i end up a crying mess. And its not as simple as sounds. And then im in Australia and never got to see them live (although i have seen 100+ amazing bands) but i want more i want to be cut harder.
Back in 1987 I was working away from home and depressed that I couldn't see my girlfriend and I could not stop playing their first album on a Walkman. The song Time and Time Again (When Will I Ever Learn) was on repeat play and I vowed to see my girl at every available opportunity. We're still together 34 years later ❤
This song gets better after the first listen. Bass is killer. Beatles were cleary a influence. Nirvana influenced by these guys? The circle goes round and round.
Yes Kurt was influenced by them. This album was listed in his 50 most influential albums to Nirvanas sound in his Journals and they had a cassette with a smithereens Album on one side and an album by Celtic frost on the other int he early years they played in the van on tour.
I could probably have uploaded a better quality version, but as I increase the quality, the file size becomes massive, taking forever to upload, well 12 hours instead of 2 hours. As long as you enjoyed it, then my job is done.
