RIP Andy Rourke…. This recording should be the ‘go to’ and be all over every social media platform. I play this through big speakers and it’s like being there. And that bass!
what a shame that andy's gone. at first i couldn't believe it, far too young. such an underrated bass player. barbarism begins at home is one of my all time favourite bass lines. rip genius.
53 and 40 years later this performance still has me blown away like it was yesterday, Morrissey, Marr, Andy and Mike are just so on point…R.I.P Andy Rourke ✌️
man.... its so crazy how ON FORM their live performances were, despite marr not being able to duplicate his guitar lines to oblivion like he does on record. them being stripped down and raw live is my favourite thing in the world, really lends the tracks a post-punky edge
Ahhhh the 80's, Ahhhh 'The Tube', Ahhhh 'The Smiths'. I wouldn't change being in my 20's to *any* other decade. 🥳🎉🍾🎈 Best time to be young and alive *ever*
I didn't 'get' The Smiths until Strangeways.. I was always a metal/prog head (still am) in the 80's, but a friend persisted until I understood! I still regard them as one of the greatest and most original British bands of all time.
The ultimate band of the 80s .the smiths took music out of the dark ages to a brighter new era. Amazing unique band , I had the privilege to see them in the 80s absolutely amazing 1of the best gigs I ever saw
The first few rows are so mesmerized they can't move. A guy I worked with at a stereo store in Charlotte turned me on to them, and I was totally blown away. Unlike anything I'd ever heard. And the albums were so perfectly sequenced.
@@ScottishTeeVee It's been so long I just remembered - I had tickets to see them in Atlanta, and then Lou Reed the following night. Drove down to Atlanta from Charlotte, 200 miles or so, and the Smiths cancelled their show. Fortunately I got to see Lou Reed the following night, which really helped allay the disappointment. I think this was 1986.
I wonder if the audience realised they were witnessing history in the making...a monumental leap forward in popular music. The influence of The Smiths on society was profound.
Amazing performance and band, all four experts at their individual roles even when they were young in this film, bass just immaculate all the way through Barbarism
Great band. Great TV Show! Used to watch it every Friday teatime before hitting the town! (after a week's work) How lucky we were back then! The poor teenager of modern times can only dream about their Parent's and Grandparent's 'Privileged Youth' ! dx
Maybe not the "best" singing voice. I'm quite happy with Johnny's voice singing the same songs - while still playing those excellent quitar lines! - on his recent live appearances. But Morrissey was a completely unique stage presence at the time. Not androgynous, the way Bowie or Prince were.
This is spectacularly singular among all live Smiths clips that I've seen. Guitar and bass tone was spectacular. An incredible document of the Smiths at the top of their game. That bit at the end of Barbarism was the icing - not only for the long instrumental section, but to see BOTH Morrisey and Marr dancing. Incredible!
If you think this is good you have to listen to the live bootlegs, there are some really good recordings and they play twice as fast and loud as this, look up “I stole and I lied” and “thank your lucky stars”
Never ever gets old....These songs have a freshness and a sparkling drive and Morrissey's lyrics will still be relevant to each generation that comes along. Glad I was in my early 20's when they came along. I remember phoning my brother when I'd bought their first album to tell him just how good they were. Just brilliant live too as this TV appearance clearly shows. Although the Geordies look as though they must have been drinking embalming fluid before the gig. Probably all Duran Duran fans !
Great download looks great and sounds clear and bright good work cheered me up here in Ireland this lockdown is getting me down thank God for good music 💚✌️🇮🇪🎸🎸🎤🥁😎
For me barbarism begins at home is one of the songs for why i enjoy listening to The Smiths so much...the band sounds awesome not only for Morrissey's lyrics and voice or Marr's great riffs but because the whole band as a unit complement perfectly with each other, andy rourke's bass lines and the drum from Joyce makes this song one of the best in my opinion
The Smiths were one of those bands where every instrument and vocal all stood out, the talent was of a very high standard and gelled well for a unique sound and time. To have been 15 when I found them in 1986 late in their career, well, the pleasure and the privilege was mine and will be untill I die.
I hope you see this- I subscribed, and value this band with my heart. Family is still shocked when my sister and I sing and dance to all things Smiths/Morrissey, and they have no choice but to join in, because that’s what’s going on. Huge Fans!!
Watching this tonight and imagining how twitchy they must have been getting when Barbarism goes on and on; they must have been well overdue an ad break. A brilliant epitaph to Andy’s talents too; never mind Morrissey and Marr, there was another genius on that stage that night.
A friend had a spare ticket to see The Smiths in 84 and as a hardcore punk I turned it down, one of my biggest regrets , as they became one of my favourite bands in later life.
god i wish i was alive in the 80’s :/ the smiths are literally my favorite band, im so jealous of anyone whoever saw them live. if any of you guys have seen them live can you tell me of your experience?
I am old enough and lucky enough to have seen them 3 times, March 1985, July 1986, October 1986, March 1985 my first ever gig as a tender 16yr, a complete epiphany for me, and absolutely epic experience. I was still at school, it felt like such and adventure, even though only 12 miles from my home town, the words, the music just spoke to me, on the brink of leaving school and moving to another part of town, so much resinated with me.
Yes - saw them with some mates at Poole Arts Centre with support from an unknown James they were giving a leg up to. Two of us default Sabbath and Velvet Underground listeners, the other two more New Romantic/Cocteau Twins. We all knew we were going to something special & even so they floored us. Venue where you could take drinks into the crowd but I can’t imagine ANYONE EVEN THOUGHT of going to the bar during gig. Ridiculously immersive. Wouldn’t have noticed if the roof caved in. The Tube itself was a great show. Different times…
Great quality, thanks so much for encoding and upping, @ScottishTeeVee 🙏 That outtro to Barbarism is superb! 🎉 (and thanks for making the tape donation, Gaz & Maggie)
Great find, @scottishteevee thanks! I vaguely remember watching this on the telly, while I was doing my A-levels in England. The Smiths were all over John Peel's radio show, and it felt they came out of nowhere. Listening to this now, Andy Rourke's bass on Barbarism sounds a lot funkier than I remember it (or maybe on the album)... a real breath of fresh air at the time, and that bassline in particular feels like it could've seeded the funkier side of Madchester. Mozzer probably cringes now thinking of the hearing aid and the bouquets stuffed up his arse....
Watching this January 11th, 2023. Amazing sound and picture quality, thx so much for such a great upload. Would love a reunion and a World Tour to see them here in Buenos Aires. That might never happen, so thank you Mother Nature for this performance…
