Johnny Marr is such a great melodic guitar writer. His parts absolutely fit the tones that The Smiths always go for. The band as a whole are definitive part of the 80s.
I first heard this song when it came out nearly 40 years ago and I’ve never been able to work it out - looks like Marty found this tough as well so that gives me some comfort! Johnny Marr clearly met the devil at a crossroads somewhere near Manchester - how the heck did he come up with this at the age of 18 or 19? One of the great mysteries of the universe.
Holy shit it’s amazing to see you’re around still Marty I haven’t logged into this account in forever. I remember watching your nothing else matters tutorial when I was like 16!! Thanks for inspiring me and teaching me when I was young man. You’re the GOAT!!!!!
Y'know Marty, I spent hours trying to play this in the mid-80s (with no help from the internet) and it's clear from your video that I got it wrong. I'm now, in my early 50s, going to have to atone for this and finish your tutorial.
Really great guitar piece, honestly a lot of guitar stuff can be a bit boring and repetitive, but this is very innovative with a good level of complexity. The guitar tone is really good for this one too
Nice one Marty! This song was in my head yesterday😮 i didnt think the smiths were big in the states. Great 80s guitar FYC she drives me crazy and roxette look sharp all took the style and used it
I appreciate this video. Johnny Mar is challenging guitarist to learn. Keep them coming. FYI I saw him explain the inspiration for Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now. Years ago he purchased a red 335 very similar to your signature model. Just saying…
I ❤ Marty for many moons. You r a great teacher. Im killing my fingers trying to learn blackbird. Should I get extra light strings? I have a Martin d1r
The Smith's music is one of the greatest things ever created by humanity...like if Aliens were to look back at our civliation in 5,000 years, I hope this is the first song they hear.
all you have to do is watch past the intro of this video and I will explain it. But yes, I tuned up. on the recording, it's not quite a whole step up so you actually have to tune by ear to make it sound exactly like the recording.
They don't come much lighter than that, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that yeah, they should be light enough. Good luck, it's a tricky song to learn but it will be worth it!
Damm I'm too lazy to restring a guitar with light strings and tune it up.....he'll I can barely be arsed to change my strings unless they snap or are like 2 years old and sound out of tune...guess I'll have to stick to my half baked capo at 2nd fret method.....that said you really nail this....didn't noel gallagher say once that " Johnny's that good that not even johnny can play like johnny marr"...lol
Wish I could get a guitar to start learning hopefully with some Christmas money I can get one I found a good second hand strat copy for £45 and a good amp for £25 if I have enough I might pick up the £120 kit on this other RU-vidrs website but I don’t think I’ll get close to that
Smiths is so hard to play. The lesson sounds quite off IMO and Marty struggles with it too. It’s just a very odd way of playing guitar with all these high notes. Makes me appreciate Johnny Marr even more.
