Oh Dear! Wait a minute while I wipe my tears away! Oh Tommy Smothers you " MR. YOYOMAN" were my favorite brother! 💞🙏🏻 I remember the TV nights when our family would pile into the den to watch " The Smothers Brothers Show"!. It was an hour of truly edgy 60'S entertainment. I remember the night your show had been canceled by the station for pushing the envelope. I think it was about your protesting of the War the US was sending boy's to in Vietnam!? We were heartbroken losing your show! But a few years later along came ROWEN MARTIN'S LAUGH IN TV and they BROKE all the TV regulations! So thankfully they Brought you and Dick on as guest's! Thanks for teaching us YOYO TRICKS and to always to "QUESTION AUTHORITIES"! REST in PEACE and LOVE forever TOMMY! I Thank both of you brother for truly touching my heart and soul as a pre-teen and affected my direction in life. 🕊❤💫🕯🎶🧿🙏🏻

I grew up with the Smothers Brothers.I started watching the show right from the get-go in January of 1967 .Ialways wondered how come we don't see it on RU-vid or even on cable? we see plenty reruns of Laugh-In which, if it wasn't for the Smothers Brothers ,would never have happened. CBS cancelled the Smothers Brothers but at least NBC had the guts to do laughin which had the same political humor.

Way before the likes of "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE", and just shortly before the debut of NBC's "ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN" in early 1968, CBS's "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR" (1967-1969) was quite a controversial variety hour, given that the show's content had reached deeply into the objections of both American conservatives, and the CBS brass that didn't take kindly to much of Dick and Tom Smothers' material-and, in fact, that it got THAT bad, that the CBS people demanded that each tape of "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR" be reviewed before airing (censoring any "objectionable content"), and, that any delay or failure to comply with the Network's demands would result in a pre-emption. But nevertheless, the variety show was still a successful format, with great guest stars, and the greater music of Nelson Riddle, the CBS variety series still made a huge dent in the ratings, and went on to win 2 Emmy Awards and five nominations, showing how huge the dent that The Smothers made on CBS, despite the disruptive politics! running a total of 71 (or 73) episodes, the show managed to last as long as it did, but their battle against CBS's corporate censorship was a lengthy conflict, especially as it was believed that the series was supposed to be renewed for the 1969-70 TV season, but that did not happen, and Robert Wood, CBS head, fired The Smothers, in a breach of contract, replacing them with "THE LESLIE UGGAMS SHOW", and eventually "HEE HAW", which CBS later canceled in The Spring of 1971 during their "de-ruralization" process (but survived in first-run syndication from 1971 to 1992), but Tom and Dick Smothers got the last laugh when they became victorious in their suit against CBS in 1973, which the network had to pay them. In early 1970, ABC aired the short-lived "PAT PAULSON'S HALF AN HOUR COMEDY SHOW", with former SMOTHERS cast regular Pat Paulson (also a one time Presidential candidate) which, was an okay show (they even had "Daffy Duck" in animation appear on one episode), but, the strangest event was to take place some 25 years later, when CBS brought back The Smothers in an early February 1988 TV special commemorating "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR", and, shortly after that TV special, CBS officially brought back "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR" on March 30, 1988, as a 16 episode run TV series, which was quite a change of venue since the embattled feud between The Smothers and CBS in the late 1960s that led to their cancelation, and, bringing them back on the network 25 years later, was a true first in TV history!

Oh, and another factor that I failed to mention, was Mason Williams, the talented composer of the hit 1968 number, "Classical Gas" (released on Vinyl LP as "THE MASON WILLIAMS PHONOGRAPHIC RECORD" by Warner Bros.-Seven Arts Records in 1968) was the head writer for "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR", along with Steve Martin, Allan Blye, and Bob Einstein (1942-2019), who also appeared in the series as a Motorcycle Traffic cop, "Officer Judy".
@MONGOOSE1ful
@MONGOOSE1ful 2 года назад
The Smothers Brothers also appeared in animation on an ABC-TV special that was produced by Videocraft Ltd./Rankin Bass and aired sometime between 1970 or 1969. "COMEDY KINGS" may have been the title, but I could be wrong.

Thank you so much for these uploads. It really is like a time capsule. The thing I find about these old Smothers Brothers shows is that the sketches don't really hold up very well. The only things that stand the test of time are the musical guests and the Smothers Brothers' own bits. (And the Pat Paulsen stuff.)

I still have every episode I recorded from when the series aired on E! Entertainment Television in 1993. I have every episode from seasons one and two, except for the episode from 1968 with Don Knotts, Mel Torme and Ravi Shankar. Would you have a copy of that one? I'm also missing about seven episodes from the third season. Sadly E!, frankly, butchered the episodes due to clearance rights. I've been trying to find someone who would be interested in these physical VHS copies for their collection. I also have a copy of the 5/7/67 episode with Jonathan Winters, Nancy Wilson and The Jefferson Airplane from kinescope.
