The Smurfs Cartoon 1981 Review - Mega Jay Retro  

I'm not gonna lie, HB may have had its ups and downs in the 70s and 80s, but this show in particular is an example of quality programming of the era. I don't know how HB did it but they sure made the characters, animation and episodes good.

If I made a reboot then I would add depth to the characters like how Ducktales did. A couple examples are; Jokey being the way he is to keep himself from feeling sad or depressed as he hates feeling it. Grouchy would be more cynical often expressing how he always feels that sooner or later something bad will happen like being attacked by gargamel. He often feels that the universe is against him to. Brainy would have trust issues not being able to trust others except himself and Papa. I would also have a more linier storytelling. Like the first episode would be a new version of Smurfette’s origin and the rest of the first season would see her integrating and discovering what kind of person she is and what she likes.

i myself knew there was a cartoon of it but didnt watch it until i found the show on netflix now im halfway through the first episode and i can say its cute, charming and joyful

Not sure when this was changed, but the version of Smurfs I remember as a kid had one character acting as a combination of both Chef and Greedy Smurf. The character had the physical appearance of Chef, yet their name and some of the personality traits came from Greedy. Great review!

A very interesting children's cartoon. The smurfs always seemed me to be inspired by the Seven Dwarves and garden gnomes.

Was no Chef Smurf is in the cartoon, that role was combined with Greedy Smurf.

Great review when waiting for the movie to be released as a kid and I would watch the cartoon on Boomerang leading up to the premiere of the movie AKA when my mom took me to go see it. I would definitely recommend watching the first Smurf movie but just know it is kind of different from the cartoon and it's pretty much his own thing and I would recommend Smurfs and the Lost Village but that one takes inspiration from the comics more so then the cartoon or anything else the only Smurf movie I would not recommend is the sequel to the original one which is pretty bad.

i like the smurfs too and i hope too have the complete series on dvd but only some episodes were released on dvd in region 1 the complete season 1 and only half of season 2 was released and only 3 specials smurfs springtime special the smurfs christmas special its the season to be smurfy were released on dvd and also the smurfs and the magic flute is on dvd too in region 1 but was never the complete series collection i herd only in region 4 was complete on dvd its not fear i hope the complete series collection will come soon too dvd in region 1 soon some day

For some reason, if an episode was centered around Lazy, you knew it would be 🔥 Examples: Paradise Smurfed All Hallow's Eve (although I don't 100% agree with Papa Smurf's 'lets choke Gargamel and Hogatha with smoke' retaliation, it was still clever quick thinking though) Lazy's Nightmare

I just want to mention that the purple Smurfs in the show were originally black in the comic of the same name the show was based on, but the skin was changed to purple due to racial concerns.
