The amazing amazing SoCals on The Sing Off - a singing competition featuring a cappella group - singing their Journey medley: Any Way You Want It/Open Arms/Don't Stop Believing.
Of all the performances from all the groups (and I've watched them all many times), this is the one I keep coming back to . Solid, non-gimmicky performance. You keep hearing things each time you didn't hear before. These guys should have won.
@tsl141 Yeah, right. They (SoCal Vocals - the USC a capella group the SoCals are formed from) did it way back in 2005. It was part of their "Get In. ROCK. Get Out" album. Glee wasn't even conceived back then.
I was shocked and upset myself! They were my FAVORITE group. They have such great presence and personality on stage. And ALL of them can sing well, unlike Voices of Lee, which depends mostly on the brown-haired girl ( the rest are like back-up singers). My favorite singers in the SoCals are the pretty blonde-haired girl and the lead guy with the glasses. So amazing!
The guy who does the guitar solo, when he sings Open Arms, his voice is ridiculous, esp. at 1:22. Wow! And the bass singer's face at 2:37 is hilarious!
I really thought they should have went to the finals....hands down....they were one of the best!! i love this arrangement and thought they did a great job!
SoCals are actually the part of SoCals Vocals, the acapella group from USC. The Journey song has been done by them long before Sing Off or Glee. I think it was also in their album which they came out with a few years back.
@diclonisvector Also mad props to them... cause they did it LIVE where in shows... those kids get many takes then recording studio time... to sound good for the show.
dont get me wrong, this group is pretty good, but i bet the winner of the show is probably the group that sings the most popular songs lol i enjoyed this though ;)
what a powerful opening for the song, and seriously, i like this performance way better than glee. they balance better and use the voices to their strenths. not to mention the lead for don't stop believing sounds EXACTLY like the original. what a show!! i would so pay to see them live
@myposchange - So basically the Backbeats was set up as an "all star" group? I can't believe they didn't win against Committed and Street Corner Symphony. I mean Courtney, Johanna, Kelley, and having exactly 5 girls and 5 guys? Seams on paper like an unbeatable group, but America liked Boyz 2 Men part 2 more I guess.
I agree they were really good, i think the thing that killed them with the judges was in open arms if you listen the girl singing the duet is off key just a hair and its noticeable.

The blond who sang Open Arms is Kelley Jakle she played Jessica in all 3 Pitch Perfect movies. She has been in a bunch of Lifetime Christmas movies as well The dark haired girl was in the German group in PP2
What is the name of the lead tenor? The one in the glasses. He's the best single singer I've ever seen in any A Capella group (except maybe the blonde in Rockapella)
@RenaissanceTuber glee was NOT using auto tune. i first thought that Glee was using auto tune, but i was researching A LOT, and found that they weren't.
@FuchsiaKnight This wasn't ripped off at all. There are many many differences between this one and Glee's. However, I do say the Beelzebubs ripped off the SoCal VoCal's arrangement of "When I Get You Alone" when they sang it with Darren Criss on Glee.
The Beelzebubs had their own arrangement of When I Get You Alone that they originally performed in 2005/2006, which is what was used in Glee. You can find it on the Beelzebubs album Pandaemonium.
