David Fincher’s The Social Network is the stunning tale of a new breed of cultural insurgent: a punk genius who sparked a revolution and changed the face of human interaction for a generation, and perhaps forever. Shot through with emotional brutality and unexpected humor, this superbly crafted film chronicles the formation of Facebook and the battles over ownership that followed upon the website’s unfathomable success. With a complex, incisive screenplay by Aaron Sorkin and a brilliant cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake, The Social Network bears witness to the birth of an idea that rewove the fabric of society even as it unraveled the friendship of its creators.

fun fact: The script was written in 178 pages. The studio told Aaron Sorkin to cut it off at least 30 pages, but director david fincher decided to keep all the pages. He told Sorkin to read all of them within two hours, and Sorkin succeeded. That's why the dialogues in the opening scene starts when the studio's logo is shown.

I also enjoy the fact that they employed Natalie Portman, being a Harvard grad herself, for advising purposes to truly get an authentic feel for that Harvard culture. I've always liked that opening sequence too, following the initial breakup scene, where Mark is running back to his dorm -- but in the process we get a very good feel of that campus and the surrounding area. Plus it's always crucial in films to have a unique score that helps establish the mood and feel of the movie.

You're missing the point. success is literally shown to you in the movie and it keep coming back in every real success story of one man. success is having the nerve to be the biggest evil asshole to your best friends and rightful owners for a share of your success. you cut them off, you stab them in the back. most people won't do that, the extra step. And that is Erica's greatness at least in her lines here. he will win big, but that's because he got the nerve to be that back stabbing stomping on hearts and heads of others to climb to success. the other factors you wrote are there too. but if you missed this part I entailed you missed the point in the movie about success entirely.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like Harvard could take that scene and basically make it their brochure (Not that they need any help recruiting). It makes me feel like I missed out on a major experience in life by not going there. I love how there's even visual continuity in the scene. The steeple that they first pan down from at 5:31 is also visible in the shot at 7:01, and you can tell that Zuckerberg takes a left turn after the cut at 7:27 because the same white tower is visible at the end of that shot and the beginning of the next one.

Because it's such a awesome, inspirational, moody, and oddly comforting scene. This is a great opening scene for a thought I believe is accurate. We can see Mark running back to his place while other people just casually walk and go off with their day. This opening scene is spectacular because it really shows you how calm everything is before Mark's actions take place for the rest of the night, before everyone will be the ones who are running and Mark will be the one walking.

It does a really good job at putting us in Mark’s shoes. The characters don’t choose their words, they just settle on something they can think of in that moment; the first half of the conversation is just them arguing over what they’re saying, showing how it’s impossible to communicate because of context bullshit; the people are all smiling stupidly and ignoring Mark as he passes them by. We don’t talk about it very often, but when you’re socially awkward, especially because of autism or something like it, there’s a certain contempt you develop for everyone who isn’t socially awkward. We don’t understand them, and we don’t like the things they put us through, so we don’t like them.

I can somewhat sympathize with Mark in the opening scene because I've been in his position before. After feeling someone has rubbed him the wrong way, he immediately takes to the internet and creates something scathing about that person, destroying whatever relationship with them he may have had left. It feels good to vent the anger at the time, and you don't regret it at first because you feel you don't need them anyway. But give it a few years and you begin to contemplate how different life would have been if you hadn't fallen out. That's when you begin to feel guilty. Several times after Mark is shown trying to make amends with Erica, meaning even if he doesn't personally believe it, he feels guilty about what he did to her.
