On November 11, 1918, 1 minute before the official end of World War 1, a soldier died. He was remembered as a hero, and memorials were built in his honor-but that wasn’t the entire story. As it turns out, this man wasn’t quite exactly the hero that he was made out to be. Let’s dive in…
If you're new here, hey! My name is Andy Jiang and I do clearly explained, extremely detailed dives into some of the most fascinating, bizarre, and unreal untold true stories that are out there. Subscribe and turn on all post notifications so you don’t miss any of my weekly uploads!

😢😢😢😊Leviticus‬ ‭18:22‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Ephesians 6:10-18 says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless.

I think Henry wanted to die. It seems like he knew that his actions were futile and was desperate to redeem himself in the eyes of his comrades and country, or die. He was depressed, lost his girl, his hard-earned position and the respect of his peers. It was a choice between either gaining all that back, or dying. Unfortunately his depression drove him to this ridiculously dangerous act and cost him his life

Yes, I hear depression above any other motive. He didn't have an apparent reason to face life back home without his girl, without the honor he had just lost. For whatever reason, turning his gun on himself was not acceptable for him, so he took the last opportunity he had to get taken down by the enemy.

There is no way in hell that he felt ashamed looking from his perspective, that he lost his job, girlfriend and potentially future wife, life, comrades, and everything because the war started, he most likely would've have hated his enemy, and put the blame on them for ruining their lives. This would then give a better reason for rushing the enemy, for he already lost his position, probably adding fuel to the flame.

He felt he had lost everything, he lost his rank, he lost his fiancee, he lost his regiment's trust and he lost the place he rightfully belonged, and thus, his deliberate final charge was perhaps suicidal, in a literal sense. He will be remembered. He was abused, at least mentally, and also suffered from the trauma of the other soldiers' district in his loyalty. But no, he was not a valiant man who would meaninglessly die for his country and fellowmen - unless he was reduced to a machine. Dying in the final minute of war wouldn't realistically change anything. He reminds me of Olaf, glad and big, who was ridiculed for his anti-war stance, who stood up for the personal principles prevalently dominating his peaceful pacifist personality.

Many people who commit suicide see themselves having no motivation for living. This also applies to people who aren't suffering from depression themselves. They see themselves as disposable. And thus the only freedom they want is the sweet release of death.

World War One had no right or wrong, Just terrible. WW2 was less ambiguous, but ww1 was a fruitless war that concluded nothing and only caused further distress. It was the the barest display of self-importance and ego of politician and leaders of countries and soldiers weren't heroes, They were victims. To call them heroes would imply they did something great, but no, the world wouldn't have been any worse off if Germany won in WW1(Again, ww1, Not WW2) Kaiser was a utter idiot, out of touch, but that was how literally all monarchs of the era were. To pretend it was for a purpose higher than clout and land would be a misrepresentation. No one in WW1 fought for what was right. Britan, France were imperial oppressors seeking more power. Germany, Italy, Austrians were not colonists majorly, But not out of good of their heart. Americans were out of touch egoists with same racial view as britian. Not what I'd call good.

Beautiful and sad story, but not really correct. This is the story according to American history. Other countries have their own 'last' shot. The last official death happened in Africa a few days later. This was a world war and it took more than 6 hours for the news to get to other continents. A telegram could take a few hours or a day depending on the lines and would then need to be passed on. In some areas like the Baltics, soldiers thought the official word of armistice was a trap and they kept fighting for days after as well. Skirmishes continued for weeks, and deaths from wounds sometimes took years. This was the last man officially documented shot and killed on the Western Front, and he just happens to have a back story. It doesn't mention the men shot the days before who died in the mud after armistice. Every soldier had a life they left behind, and a death for no real reason, except that someone wanted to leave a legacy, build an empire, acquire more land or assets, or... who really knows why there is war.

He definitely wanted to die. Scary bevause he probably thought he would be better dead than alive. And crazy enough, that might be the case. He would have returned home with the stigma of being demoted, no fiance, looked as a "sympathizer" to the Germans, and what he saw in the war, would have effected him for life in a negative way. He came out a hero in death. (Which is very crazy and morbid).
