Billy Joel is one of America’s and the 21st Century’s greatest songwriters. Famous for songs like Piano Man, Uptown Girl, and Just the Way You Are, he has written a large catalogue of fantastic music. Although he is well known for his hit singles, his most loved music can be found on his albums. Songs like Vienna and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. This is quite unique compared to other songwriters. What is it about the way Billy Joel writes music that makes his album tracks so good? And why do so many people love his music?

Absolutely. Billy Joel's lack of number one hits and the time it took for him to get album traction, was a bit of an eye opener for me. I got Piano Man long before it was popular (in Australia). And when you think - he'd done Piano Man, Turnstiles, and The Stranger before he got reasonable traction with 52nd Street. The music business is a bit idiotic sometimes.

I love seeing the respect for Billy! Nobody loves him more than me & I say he’s the greatest singer songwriter to ever step foot on this earth. On the music end, he is so colorful. Everything sounds unique & it can stand on its own even without lyrics. Not one song sounds like another. You get the feeling of “pressure” before a single word is said! He’s a rare classically trained pianist while also being a natural composer. Those 2qualities do not go hand in hand. It’s usually one or the other but he is equally phenomenal with both, again I can’t stress how rare that is. Lyrically what separates him from most is that they all make sense from start to finish. A lot of songs have lyrics that sound cool & creative but don’t really mean anything. I’m not knocking them cause some of my favorite songs are like that & they still evoke feelings from me but Billy never did that. All his words make sense & that’s insanely hard when you take into consideration that he has to do this in the confines of a melody. That puts limits on a writer but he pulled it off flawlessly every time. In songs like “Downeaster Alexa” & “Goodnight Saigon” he gets the entire experience down perfectly in under 4min inside the limited space of a melody. His talent is unmatched cause he’s done this every time. Never once did he take the easy route & just phone it in. He stands alone & although he’s beloved worldwide I feel he still doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. I just have so much love & respect for him. Love that you guys see it as well!

I think that's the difference between Joel, Jackson and Prince. Imo the latter did too much and many songs didn't sound finished to the best level.

So finally a top songwriter admits that writing songs is often a cruel grind, mostly endured in isolation. Yes, great songs have been written in minutes, but that´s the rare exception. Most great songs are crafted, which takes a long time, particularly when they sound effortless.

I actually think songs that drop out of the sky are a result of years of listening and researching via the subconscious. Kind of like a kitchen making a meal and putting it out for the waiter (being the artist) to take to the table. I also think that it probably happens to musicians who aren't formally trained more often, at least all the anecdotes I've heard have supported that. I think you can lose that sense of "magic" once you learn too much.
@andrewtaylormus
@andrewtaylormus 7 месяцев назад
Exactly. 3.5 minutes full of conflident lyric, performance, harmony, instrumentation and arrangement sounds inherently like it's dropped out of the sky, especially when you're just hearing a song for the first time. It's a very different thing behind the curtain, with a lot of staff and moving parts in the industry, no matter how quickly a song's lyrics and chords are written.

Costello said anything worth doing is difficult. I can only infer he made great efforts. But he also said the key word in creating is to PLAY. He didn't say work, so I guess that's different from what Joel is saying.

Billy Joel is truly an unparalleled songwriter. Songs like Vienna and She’s Always a Woman are decades old, and were released years before I was born, but somehow dictate my life decisions. I’m truly not making it up: whenever I’m having a moment of self-doubt, I hear the lines “Though you can see when you’re wrong you know you can’t always see when you’re right” and I just go for it. His songs are a blessing.

You may have missed the biggest strategy of all. For a typical album, Bill used to write 30 or 40 songs, and the band would help him figure out which ones would work and which ones wouldn't, and they'd end up with 8 or 9 good tracks. That's why those surviving tracks are such high quality. They also changed the songs during that process, for example changing 'only the good die young' from Reggae, which was popular at the time, to a 50s style rockabilly with horns.
@howtodoitdude1662
@howtodoitdude1662 4 месяца назад
Correct, but it’s not 30 or 40 songs. Billy even mentioned it on an interview that he basically comes with 10-12 song ideas.

@hughmungus1767
@hughmungus1767 Год назад
Of all the artists I've heard over the last 5 or 6 decades, I can honestly say he's one of the very few whose songs are all different from one another. Most artists develop a sound or style and then keep on producing music in that style. I don't know if that's because that style is what they like the best or because, once they get a following, they don't want to take a chance on losing that following; I expect both are factors. But Billy seems unafraid to write songs of different styles and put them together on albums and he's obviously got enough fans that they keep buying the recordings. I understand he regularly books Madison Square Gardens himself and sells out multiple night runs there playing to his many fans. Not many artists can do that!
@Prof_Jeff
@Prof_Jeff Год назад
@@hughmungus1767 You are exactly right. Billy wrote for himself; the music business can go pound sand. He also explored various styles, as David mentioned. 52nd Street was jazz-influenced; Glass Houses was rock; The Nylon Curtain was his homage to George Martin and The Beatles; An Innocent Man was his tribute to the roots of rock and roll (late '50s and early '60s). I don't know how to classify Storm Front: "The Downeaster Alexa" is a singer-songwriter sea shanty, inspired by the style of Gordon Lightfoot, then we also have a straight-up rocker like "I Go to Extremes." Billy Joel cannot be pigeonholed, and that's one of his strengths.

The Stranger was a huge seller actually. It may have started at 181 but most albums started low and worked their way up. The way this was measured changed in the early 90s and made albums debuting at No. 1 common. In any case people didn't know the songs on The Stranger till word of mouth kicked in. He was not a household name when it came out.
@hughmungus1767

I worked in a record store (here in Canada) when The Stranger came out and it was VERY successful here. We sold a lot of copies! Before that time, the song Piano Man had been popular for people that listened to AM radio and Captain Jack tended to get played on the less commercial FM stations; virtually none of the other songs on the other albums were played on the radio.

That's just a weird metric. The Stranger peaked at #2 in the US, NZ, CA and AUS. It was the 4th-best selling album of 1978 in the US, won 2 Grammys and has now sold over 11 million copies in the US alone. It was also the very first album to be released on CD, in Japan, 1982.

That particular track was very telling. Billy himself has stated on several occasions that he felt with that album, he had "spoken his piece" musically. He wanted to go out at the top of his game, not fade away into irrelevancy by churning out low-quality music for the sake of releasing something.

Walking away from pop songwriting is nothing to be particularly impressed about. On the contrary, it is rather disappointing. Can't imagine Dylan or McArtney ever completely shutting the door. Billy Joel is a rare bird. He's got all that craft with the melody and harmonic movement tied to the lyrics, but on top of that he's one of the few balladeers who rocks just as hard and funky as he can also make you tear up, thinking about your own life, relationships, lost loves and opportunities. He might not be as often mentioned but all his music is as lasting and universal as the best classical music.

Billy Joel is a GIANT! There are very few songwriters who can boast of having a similar catalog. All of his albums are amazing and you'd be hard pressed to find any filler in them. Also, the fact that he just stopped producing popular music in 1993, when he was not even 45 years old, is such a bossy/ballsy move that really makes me respect him even more. Billy never let anyone come to the point of saying "his old stuff was better". He never let himself burn out, deteriorate, run out of ideas or inspiration... He quit while he was still ahead! And if anyone doesn't believe me, listen to River Of Dreams once again and discover what an incredible album it is.

The Beatles were his main influence on albums having little filler. Wish he wouldn’t have stopped. My first attention to Billy Joel was due to the song, "Billy the Kid". There is a section where there is a call and response between his piano and the drummer. I'm not aware of any other composer that has done this. This unusual pairing got my attention. My favorite album is Streetlife Serenade, and my favorite song is Souvenir. He is an American Mozart, and a national treasure. Well done, David. I don't know why, but I think he'd be a great actor.

This is why I admire and look up to this man so much, I feel like I’m terrible at writing songs, writing good ones anyway, but if it took him that long to get it right, then maybe it’ll take me a while too.

trust the process! maybe contradicts the idea of the video but i think all we can do is keep writing and honing our craft and putting things out there for feedback, even if we don’t feel it’s good enough or ready to share … “though you can see when you’re wrong, you know you can’t always see when you’re right” ;)

There are artists you go to just for catchy hits and there are artists you go to for the entirety of their albums. Those kinds of songwriters are the best.

True talent and honest work will always reach the hearts of the people! Billy Joel and his music are proof of that despite him having to deal with with music industry and record label. It’s telling that his “Filler tracks “ are more memorable than most of todays hits.

Thank you .. I had intuitively felt like there was something different about his songwriting. I think you nailed it perfectly ... Billy is a craftsman songwriter. He doesnt just put out ... He hones and refines each one with care. ❤

David, this a wonderful video, really appreciate the insights in BJs legacy, definitely one of the greats! Just yesterday, I bought tickets to go see him at MSG with my dad! We've always booked over Billy Joel's music; another great thing about his legacy is the way his music transcends generations

yeah, it’s true, no filler from Billy. His live performances come across fantastically too with a great band. I listened to the stranger album endlessly as a teenager and my friends thought it was cheesy, but I heard an unmistakable quality. Great vid!

Vienna is such a wonderful song. To think the first time I heard it I didn't even know it was his but it made so much sense when I checked it out and saw it was. His songwriting style is just unique and super identifiable. What an incredible artist he is 💚

I'm 54 now and have been a huge Billy Joel fan since my early teens. Many of my favorite songs from him are lesser known songs: Prelude/Angry Young Man Get it Right The First Time Everybody Has A Dream Until The Night Stiletto All for Leyna Through The Long Night Laura I could list so many more. He's one of the true greats in the history of modern popular music.

Great video. I'm 37 and I grew up on Billy Joel. Even now I'll discover some forgotten track I had glossed over or had somehow missed and I get mad for not loving it sooner. (Most recently, Los Angelenos off Streetlight Serenade.)

You really got into the essence of his songwriting. It explains why every song on every album was solid - not necessarily a great song, and not necessarily one I love, but there are no fillers. I saw Billy Joel in London in the mid 80s. He was hugely popular, and I had no idea he wasn't burning up the charts at the time. To give you some idea of how popular he was, while we were queuing at the venue, a scalper offered us 10 times the face value of the tickets.

Hadn't thought about it that way but you're absolutely right. My favourites at the moment are probably Miami, You're Only Human and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant but my favourites of his change so frequently, which i dont tend to get with many other artists. Absolutely a testament to his songwriting ability and consistency. I dont think hes written a bad song.

Loved this! Billy Joel is one of my favourite artists. Me being a piano player might have a lot to do of that. I learned a lot of his tunes. He was one of my best teachers. Technique. Cool chord changes. And like you said his albums were great. Every time I would get a new album I’d know one of the tracks, but looking back I know them all. They were all strong songs. From an age where you used to listen to the whole album. Kinda miss those days in the age of mp3s and mixes/playlists.

He is a guy with proper music in his veins. Incredible to think he was almost going to follow a career as a Boxer! I saw a documentary years ago about Antonio Carlos Jobim and Billy Joel was interviewed for his comments and he demonstrated how Jobim's music was inspired by Mozart and that told me about Billy's background and grounding in one short utterance. He's come through some bad times and he's a winner and I've always loved his music - it's up there with the best.
