4:30 I can't hate on Danica's inclusion, if only because she helped fund the game. Apparently she was such a huge SEGA fan that she wanted to be immortalized in the game, so it's nice that they did it. Her model is kinda rough, though
This was a very interesting take on the All-Stars Racing games. Shared some similar thoughts here I had toward them, characters having unique tricks in the first game for example. Course & Character representation in the first game is really something I wish they had expanded on considering they had released Metal Sonic DLC with Egg hangar. ~ SB_Crimson
My comments on all 3 games: All-stars racing: - Pretty hype about it when the game announces. Most of the tracks are fun to race at. - Each character feels unique. - The character stats are unbalanced. Some characters have better stats when compared, like AiAi is a weak version of Sonic. In CPU matches, those with high handling always performs better than the rest. You can snake drift the whole track with them in endless boost if done correct. Using those with low accel and handling gets lots of disadvantages. Transformed: - A huge step up in track design and mechanic. It's so fun that I never feel bored play this game. - World tour is fun. Some events provide challenges. - The character stats look balance at the beginning, but then you'll realize the unlockable characters are mostly boost type character and they'll dominate almost half of the roster. Also when can to high level plays, boost characters seems to be a lot better than others. - Also pretty sad at Billy Hatcher not making the final cut to the roster. TSR: - A degenerated game compared to the previous 2. 9 out of 21 tracks are reused tracks? For real? - Story mode feels meh and forced, like everything are just mixed into a package with not much meaning. - 15 characters are too little. They could have characters outside the story mode, like the Riders series. - Team mechanic feels fun, but doesn't feel impactful to the overall game. Speed type characrers like Sonic and Shadow are obviously a lot better than the rest. - After finishing the game, I don't find myself replaying it again alone. Even I play online with my friends and communities, we only play the races with the team mechanic turned off, rather that playing what the game is trying to sell. Overall: Transformed > All-stars > TSR
In reference to the point about Transformed and its items. That game has the best overall item and combat design. The powerups are robust and nuanced. They allow for a good deal of application, while retaining a strong degree of player agency. Being that just about all powerups have some form of counterplay. Such as boost escaping from drones. Swarm is a skill based 1st place seeker. It doesnt guarantee a hit, rather it can impede the frontrunners flow heavily. Tbh, Quake from TSR is a much better take on the item. Such skill based design philosophies are also present in games like Blur, where some of the dev team for Transformed actually came from. Fan games such as Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart also has a skill based approach to item/combat design.
I have a headcannon that team sonic racing was gonna have other sega/third party characters, but during tryouts cream the rabbit accidentally ran over wreck it ralph with her car, causing her to get fired and for other third party characters companies to pull out. This explains why cream and non-sonic characters aren't in the game, and why the ralph in wreck-it ralph 2 acts like he has brain damage.
I really disagree in the character roaster department. The Sega characters SHOULD outweigh the Sonic ones and that is coming from a gigantic sonic fan. The point of the games where never to be 50% sonic and 50% non sonic characters. I would gladly take Kiryu and Ichiban from Yakuza or Joker from P5 or even hatsune miku than whatever sonic character they come up with to add. A balanced roaster comes when the love for the franchises is equal. Heck, add a huge variety of franchises and lm fine with having just Sonic. Also l am a big fan of the first game, it's nice to see some love for it.
I did say that the fact that more non Sega characters wasn't a bad thing, but I still stand by my thoughts that more sonic characters should have been included, being as Transformed has less sonic characters than the original game, I don't want the roster to be 50/50, i just think that they should have added more sonic characters, because at the end of the day, its a sonic game first and foremost, even say 3 or 4 more sonic characters would have made me happy enough that I wouldn't have brought it up in the first place. Glad you enjoyed the video!
As far as I know, there are 3 series that are used frequently: sonic, (ofc) monkey ball and… i guess the Vocaloid rhythm games as well (If u don’t know what they are, u can look them up). Every other ip Sega has created are sitting in a grave waiting another 50 years until they get revived. The only representation they have is as dlc costumes or something like that. I’m not counting total war or football manager btw, they are region specific I think
@@AstralKatOther than the fact Sonic is in the title of both games, Sega All-Stars Racing and All-Stars Racing Transformed are more or less part of the SEGA Superstars series. I think not having a lot of Sonic characters works best, as it gives more characters (SEGA or Guest Characters) a chance to be racers. Besides, Sonic has like a ton of characters, so I think having the recurring cast is enough.
Genuinely great vid as always! I think this is a great idea for a subscriber milestone. Going back to your previous work and both updating it based on your current feelings, as well as touching on points you didn't cover in the original is a really great video concept! Although I've never really played any of these games, the way you talk about them makes me genuinely interested and invested in them. Hopefully we can get another sonic racing game that lives up to all-stars someday!
Hey, your videos are awesome!!! It always surprises me what people pay attention to in a casual vs. a speedrunning sense. It’s awesome seeing so much content for all stars racing in 2023!
I'm not sure if anyone's pointed this out yet but, in the japanese release of Transformed, the Blowfish is replaced by a Garbage Puyo! It's a minor difference that adds a very large amount of charm I feel the item pool is sorely lacking. If the rest of the items were more specific like that, I think the experience would be much improved, bring back the speed shoes, make the firework a monkey ball, that sort of thing?
@@AstralKat I'm honestly surprised no-one's modded it into the western PC release, but then noone has been too inclined to fiddle with that game in general. On a sidenote, literally just bought a 360 so I can ensure I have the definitive releases of the 2 before the store closes in july ^^;
While this original game was only ok, it makes me really annoyed that Sega milks Sonic and just uses them for the future games instead. Like imagine how much hype a Skies of Arcadia or Billy Hatcher re release would be. (which they were in the first game before the Sonic bug took over)
Hey, I really liked your video : D I noticed you were playing the pc version of the first all-stars game, and wanted to point out something I only found out a few days ago. If you launch the config menu from steam and set the low detail models to four-player, the game will look a lot better, i think on par with the 360 version. Have a great day : )
transformed will always be my favorite out of the trilogy because of its gameplay that encourage you to always going to the top speed with drift boost/flips the only problem with it is that it doesn't scream confidence like the prequel did.
I love the first game better because it has rules settings for the races. If all stars racing transformed had rules settings, and if they allow you to play custom games offline single player instead of having to have another player to play custom games, then it would've been my favorite one if it had all those features I just said.
1:18 you’ve already earned my like. We have the same favorite racing game, and the same pain of seeing it fail to be reproduced by the sequel. Who decided to remove the motorcycles🤢
I only played the og and damn as someone who grew up with Mario Kart Wii I absoluty loved All Stars as a kid. ESPECIALY Opa-Opa, easy S tier character.
We seriously need a new game. I won't rest until I get my Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing with Hatsune Miku, Ristar, Arle Nadja, Kazuma Kiryu, and many more.
If Sega is making other Sonic Racing game, here are the characters I want to see plus the un-Sonic character. Unlockable Characters: Sonic Tails Knuckles Amy Cream Big Shadow Rouge Omega Sliver Blaze Sticks Vector Charmy Espio Jet Wave Storm Eggman Metal Sonic Deadly Six AiAi Billy Beat Alex Kidd Ulala Amigo B.D Joe Lockable Characters: MeeMee Baby GonGon Gum Pudding Opa-Opa Zobio and Zobiko Vyse NiGHTS Reala Bonanza Brothers Ryo Chu Chu Jacky and Akira Gilius Joe Musashi Hatsune Miku Rusty Rose (Sonic Prime) Nine (Sonic Prime) Tikal Chaos Movie Sonic Movie Tails Movie Knuckles Movie Eggman
If we’re talking a real followup to Sonic & all-stars racing, I think we should cut down on the number of Sonic characters. Part of the joy of Sonic & allstars racing was seeing old & new Sega characters race alongside Sonic.
@@sortinglies6017context Hatsune Miku was going to be a Playable character in Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed but she got scraped and replaced by Gum
My dream is one day sumo digital will make a new kart racing like the concept art with each character in their own unique vehicle (like Sonic on foot, tails on the tornado, shadow on the bike, gilius on a dinosaur ect), personality and all star moves from the first game, mechanics and gameplay from transformed and items and remixes from team (or at least more interesting ones pulled off from each franchise). The roster should be SEGA ips only, with sonic cast being max 5 characters cause that way will give more space to obscure characters or that were cut between games
The only thing I disagree with is sonic on foot, I think having him in a car makes the most sense, I just think it'd be a little jarring having him running along the racecourse
I would love to see another Sega and all stars racing with the addition of 6 player split screen, 70 playable racers, Xbox avatar as Xbox exclusive, Nathan Drake as PlayStation exclusive, Luigi as Nintendo Switch exclusive, 36 players online/LAN with the addition of 6 player split screen, 6 team race, 6 team battle, elimination, capture the flag, domination, and free for all race
I'm literally talking about all three games in the video, its called a retrospective for a reason because its covering the entire trilogy and making some corrections to a much older video, maybe you should watch the vid before commenting next time
