Didn’t know it was just a translation error but thanks for clearing it up.
3:48 i know it was supposed to be a joke, but the irony here is there actually is a ton of collision bugs & glitches like this in the game. where the terrain is different, so the jump distances are higher, the amount of room between the edges of the screen, the platforms & the boss is different because its now widescreen, hit-boxes are different & enemy speeds & patterns of attack are slightly different, so no-hit runs that were easy because of 30 years of muscle memory are near impossible because everything is different in this version. so i don't even blame you for getting hit right there. it actually happened to me a lot in sonic 3, which i used to be able to run through with my eyes closed. but in sonic origins, there are tons of small differences that make a no-hit run nearly impossible.
Even Sega was fooled. The whole way this really started coming to light was when they ran a little quiz in Japan, and one of the questions was what his original name is. The "correct" answer was of course "Mr. Needlemouse, much to the confusion of Yuji Naka when he took that quiz.
Apparently the confusion arises from the fact that hedgehog in Japanese is “はりねずみ(harinezumi)”, which directly translates to hari = needle (はり) and nezumi = mouse (ねずみ) Note that the word “apparently” should be a dead giveaway that i know very little Japanese (a bare minimum amount) so if i insulted anyone, i apologize. My assumption as to how this rumor spread would be because most American (myself included) fans of sonic didn’t understand Japanese enough to recognize the translation or (admittedly) didn’t initially bother to even question it.
Honestly you replaying Sonic games is really entertaining. You give honest insight and well edited stuff. I know you suffered with 06 and Colors, but I’m sure you’re gonna get a breath of fresh air with Sonic 2, 3, and CD. And hopefully after that you do either Adventure 1 and 2 or Unleashed, because the content for both of those games always end up being good (although for Unleashed it’s a bit of a coin toss on whether it’s loved or hated).
@@ryderchandler2183 maybe suffered is a little bit of a harsh word. But he definitely didn’t like it. He said the only saving grace of the game was the power ups, and some weren’t even that good. And for the record, Sonic fans Stockholm syndromed HARD with Colors. It was better than recent Sonic games, but that doesn’t make the game good by default.
@Welp honestly, yeah. Again it’s definitely better than recent Sonic games. But that doesn’t make it inherently good. Think about what would have happened if Colors was made in 2006 instead of Sonic 06. Colors wouldn’t be considered good I guarantee. Sonic Colors is not a good game. Just because it’s surrounded by steaming piles of hot garbage like 06, Black Knight, Secret Rings, and Forces doesn’t make it better.
See, that's the thing, classic Sonic was fast, yes, but it was still, after all, a platformer. Going fast recklessly could end poorly. Also, penguins can generally swim fairly well I think.
in the mobile ports (sonic 1 and Sonic 2 are the only ones I've seen) they added an option for you to remove the modern movement options for classic sonic. it's nice to move through the game without the modern stuff.
I think back during development, the drop dash was a scrapped ability for one of the classic sonic games (I believe it was for sonic 3, although I may be wrong). The drop dash didn’t see the light of day until mania and it was so good that they added it in the other classic sonic games for origins (they’re even adding it to sonic frontiers according to ign).
I'm also terrified of Marble Zone and I know why. As a dumbass kid I struggled through Green Hill finding every way in the world to get crushed, and one thing that stuck in my mind was "crushing means instant death", and Marble Zone cemented in my mind that moving object means danger.
@@evdestroy4121 they're normal animals, probably too stupid to navigate their way out. if they don't die of suffocating they'll probably die of starvation
I like the personal details and the mini documentary feel at the beginning of the video. Personally, I think I had a very similar experience with sonic but I never owned a Genesis. I would go to my neighbors and we’d play but he was tired of sonic by the time I’d get over. So, I never really played it much. Just loved the advertising and personality from the cartoons. When I got a Dreamcast and played Sonic Adventure 1&2, it was such a rush.
Labyrinth zone is honestly super creepy. The tight spaces, rising water, weird faces in the blocks, limited air (and lives in the original). What stands out most to me is the music, of course the drowning theme is anxiety inducing, but the background music makes it all really unsettling like it’s hiding something (like maybe drowning). Also after getting air stopping the drowning theme, the labyrinth zone theme restarts reminding you that you haven’t escaped yet. Plus scrap brain act 3 being basically labyrinth zone 4 adds some horror in a troll way
Ngl, I was furious at the last part in scrap brain, not only did they have to shove labyrinth zone back in your face, the "Final Zone" is insane because you can't spindash... (In the old one AHEM... Very hard to avoid) Anniversary mode really takes that pressure off lol
15:00 it’s pretty raw, but to be fair, it’s hard to beat “DOOMSDAY ZONE” Also, I’d agree that Sonic 1 is probably one of the less fun of the Genesis Sonics. It’s still a good game, but it’s just so claustrophobic compared to pretty much every other entry, especially compared to Sonic 2, where you can kinda just pinball your way to victory without waiting for platforms very much
My review (I played the game) Time: 4 hours or even more if u replay as other characters. 9/10 Money: 40$ for 4 games that have been ported before is not worth 40 buckaroos. 4/10 Gameplay: the gameplay is pretty good especially with the new engine which allows you to drop dash in all the games. Minimal bugs. The biggest problem is tails. 8/10 Exclusive/extra content: I love the stage retry and you need to get coins to retry which brings me to mission mode which is a lot of fun and good content. Museum mode is meh a lot of the stuff u can find on RU-vid. Cutscenes are good. 8/10 Gamemodes: anniversary mode basically fixes up the games. Classic mode why would you even play it. Waste of a game mode. Boss rush is a lot of fun. 8/10 Total rating: 37/50 Really fun game which really kills time + good cutscenes. But due to the price and the bad content I didn’t mention I wouldn’t recommend it unless there’s a price drop
It’s great to finally be able to have Sonic 3 and Knuckles accessible on more modern hardware, as due to music copyright and all that with Michael Jackson, it never got to be put on the App Store with Sonic 1, 2, and CD.
@@luckywii8731 "Atleast sonic 3 air exists" why do you say it so... Snotty? Sonic 3 complete and sonic 3 air are better than origins. If for nothing, it's free.
@@dramaticmudderer5208 The dropdash was in the beta of sonic 3 but was implemented in sonic mania. That's what I understand of why Sega take longer to realize it, right?
pro tip: you can skip a good chunk of Scrap Brain 3 if you can get under the sliding platform at the beginning of the act before it reaches the bridge. that's a lot less headaches. pro tip #2: get near an Orbinaut (the red floating orb with the four spiked balls) enough to activate it (its expression and color will change) and let it launch a single ball of spikes. then immediately get it off screen by moving away, and wait a few seconds. return to it and it will have no more spiked balls. also Sonic 1 final boss has no patterns, it's pure RNG. I'd say Sonic 1 is the most difficult of the bunch. but it can be even more challenging if you never tried it and you're going for all emeralds.
The trick for Final Zone is to wait in the middle - you've got the best chance of catching Eggman in time and if it's dicey you can pick either way to run to.
The nostalgia is so heartwarming here. I had forgotten how the first Sonic ended! I've been thinking about getting this next month when I get more cash. We'll see, I guess. But definitely loving this trip down memory lane. Can't wait to see Sonic 2! Thanks for the nostalgia and laughs, Choc 👍👍👍✌️
Your mention of the Spring Yard music brought this back to me. Back before I knew about the level select codes, I only ever saw Spring Yard through the demo when you leave the title screen on. Despite being almost 30 years ago now, hearing that music makes me remember the automatic demo and nothing else.

A lot of these issues also existed in the mobile ports - and a few are like that just because things needed to be changed for widescreen support, like the platforms for GHZ's boss
@GloryForShame correct, which is why the game is kinda mid at best (in terms of worth, we all love classic sonic, so in terms of games: good but it is super buggy, more flawed than the originals)
Here is some extra details this is not Sonic and Robotnik's first rodeo they have fought each other before based on lines on the manual like "Eggman still haven't learned your lesson," or "This time it will be different Sonic," however this is the first time they fought over Chaos Emeralds and this is Robotnik's first time using animals as organic batteries
Funnily enough the creator of sonic said for sonic 1 for the special stage the reason why there is a bird in the background or the backgrounds for the special stage is from a dream he had and was the inspiration for the special stages.
Goku first went Super Saiyan in the manga on March 19, 1991 in Japan, and it was animated into the show on June 19 of that same year. Sonic 1 came out _in America_ just a few days later but then came out in Japan a month after the American release. All this just to say that yes, a seventh Chaos Emerald was added _exclusively_ because there are seven Dragon Balls and they wanted Super Sonic to reference the Super Saiyan transformation. And yet, it is still unique in its own way, because the Dragon Balls do not allow Goku to become Super Saiyan, that is simply something he is capable of. The Dragon Balls have always merely granted wishes (or, specifically, summon Shenron who then grants the wish). However, the concept of the Chaos Emeralds scattering to the winds is iconic Dragon Ball as that is exactly what they do upon a wish being granted. This has been Dragon Ball Trivia (As It Pertains To Sonic The Hedgehog). Join me next time when I reveal to you that the Sonic 06 trio of Sonic, Shadow, and Silver is literally just Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks. Actually, I just did that now. Damn it.
Changing the number of chaos emeralds from 6 to 7 from the secret menu (also the S2+3K powerups) and actually doing that seventh special stage really, really tried my patience in this game. Getting Super Sonic wasn't that much better because you end up getting crushed quicker, haha. I almost wish there was an achievement for it but at the same time, I'm glad there's not. I almost ran out of coins, and I think I might have actually lost a part of my very soul if that had happened to me. It reminds me of when I joined Xbox live and lost the association of my Sonic 06 save to my new profile.
It took me forever to see the bluriness in Origins, I am currently watching this in the pitch black and finally noticed the bluriness, thank the gods. Not really cuz its blurry but-
1:42 well the Sonic 1 and Sonic Chaos manual says you can use the Chaos Emeralds to create Nukes and laser weapons and we all know what happened the last time a nuke was used
This is something i realised for a long time but you can only miss an emerald 4×, after that missing again is failing the treu ending & unless you play a version that added a ring (which origins doesn't do) since you WILL miss 1 ring, even if you got every single 1 in the path of the shortcut, making for 100% runs pretty much take away your chance to take the labyrinth act 1 shortcut before getting to labyrinth act 1 (unless you risk losing another chance)
Will eventually pick up Sonic Origins myself, for now I'm happy to see it here on Choc's channel! 2:01 He didn't, they added the Spin Dash to Sonic 1 for Origins specifically. 8:42 Yep, they also added the Drop Dash (from Mania, not CD) to every game in this collection. You can say whatever you want about certain aspects of it, but Origins is definitely the best way to play these games for now! 13:08 Seriously, good riddance, not a fan of lives in any game and even less in Sonic. 16:53 You actually had the right idea because in this version of Sonic 1 yes, you can even unlock Super Sonic if you collect all Chaos Emeralds (they even added one to the original six)!
I just hope people will play this, just so people can realise how much CD doesn't hold up. I feel the fact it was hard to get made the allure of it all the more enticing, but in reality, apart from it's music being great, everything else works against itself.
Average CD Enjoyer here and I disagree with pretty much all of that except your comment on the music. Most people who go into Sonic CD do so with the mindset that it should be played like 1 through 3, but if you do so you're getting a watered-down experience and missing out on the actual game. Time Travel isn't an extra pain in the ass to get the game's good ending, it IS the game. Most people who hate CD tend to be those who play it like it's 3&K.
@@toamatoro570 the problem is why should time travel be interesting when the levels are just a jumble of random colours. Then you have the actual mechanics of time travel where the level design works against you getting up to speed. Some of the bosses are okay, but at least half of them are dull. That said metal sonic will always be one of the best things CD did.
CD is a good game, but it’s just not as good as the others in the collection. I’ll give you that. But people also need to understand the way that you play the game is different than other Sonic games. If you play CD like you would S3&K, then you are going to strongly dislike it. But you gotta play it right for it to be an enjoyable experience.
@@Roboshi2007 That's.....the whole challenge. Not just going fast but finding the optimal techniques to go fast. CD is, if you think about it, a perfect example of speed being a reward for mastering a level. "jumble of random colors" Seriously, dude?
I completely understand that comment about children being afraid of weird things in video games When I was little, I turned off my Nintendo ds when the first bowser bossfight started in new super mario bros
I agree with you about Marble Zone. It reminds me of those ancient temples with unspoken dark secrets from PS1 era Final Fantasy games. I wish Sega had worked in lore hints and leaned into that mystery.
If someone didn't play the og's before Origins they may think it's like 06 on first impression. You get this beautiful HD cutscene and then get right to the gameplay and it's a pixelated hedgehog lol.
