No, because Mario and Sonic can't age. I think it grew out because Sega relied on Nintendo mainly for a game system in which they could put their Sonic games in. (After the Dreamcast) It would be awkward to still have a rivalry between the two characters when Sonic games are on the same game system as Mario
@@thefastcommenter7774 the thing is, The CEO of Sega Japan wanted to go third party since the Sega Saturn so the rivalry wasnt gonna last long anyways but did anyways till the end of the Dreamcast
@@thefastcommenter7774 While neither can age, time still obviously passes in both of their universes (with Mario Galaxy 2 referencing the events of Galaxy 1 and Sonic Generations having a literal Sonic birthday party), meaning both would acquire some level of maturity over time anyways.
I love the idea of old man Mario and nintendo chilling as they watch the XBox/Playstation/PC console war, and it coming as such a shock to young little inkling when they find out Mario and his good friend sonic had a much harsher war with far less rules long past. "Console wars are a young man's game. Lets-a-go karting."
As a Mario guy, I'm grateful that Sonic existed to motivate Nintendo to keep working hard on making great Mario games. Hopefully, Sonic Frontiers will start a bright era for the mainline Sonic games. EDIT: I never thought I'd get almost 3,000 likes and 76 replies from many people.
I hope so too! Sonic is one of my favourite video game characters of all time, and I’d love for the bad stuff to be mostly put aside so that his games can be consistently good
Seeing That Heard From A Mario Fan . It's Good. As A Sonic Fan Myself It Just Means The Collab Has Brought Mario Fans To Sonic And Sonic Fans To Mario. And As Much As You Hope Frontiers Does Well. Oh Boy IT WILL! Summer Game Fest 2022 Demo Players Have Called The Experience Phenomenal! One Of Them Even Felt *Game Of The Year Nomination Vibes* So There Is Your Good News There, Fellow Friend Mario Fan. Us Sonic Fans Also Appreciate Being On The Same Side. And Final. Yes, Frontiers Is Most Definetely Gonna Do Well And Yes It Will Open A Good Renaissance Era For Our Beloved Hedgehog. And I Hope The Mario Movie Does Well, As I've Recognized The Hate Nintendo Is Getting Because Of Their Strict Copyright Laws. And I Hope To See A Renaissance Era For Mario Too.
I love the fact that sonic and Mario teamed up after getting bombed when Sony appeared. And I also love the fact that sonic has consistently been staying afloat due to just how much of a hardcore cult fanbase those early games created. Sonic and Mario need each other to stay relevant and thanks to their rivalry they basically cemented themselves into gaming history forever so neither brand will ever completely die. There will always be sonic fans and Mario fans, these two literally can’t die 😂
I joined through the Adventure Games & felt the series downfall in the 4kids Era was hugely exaggerated. Of course the Sonic Downfall was a self fulfilling prophecy that came true the moment 2010 arrived & the series stopped trying to be good or even itself anymore. Also the video ignores just what happened on GameCube, with Nintendo fighting fiercely against both an unstoppable adversary & being able to equal the newcomer as the entire Western Game Industry went insane & was betraying them. At least now people realize just how much of an unsung masterpiece GameCube was 20 years ago.
@@WaterKirby1994 I think that really Nintendo wants quality on there games which is why they have so many good games. Sega was just unfortunate enough to make mistakes in decisions, such as releasing 06 too early
I don't think they need each other to stay relevant if Sonic didn't exist I'm sure Mario would be fine the series was already popular before the blue blur and if Sonic was never rivals with Mario I think the series would still be kicking like it is now due to the fanbase the character has from all those games that people like that keep the series afloat inspite of the inconsistent quality of modern games the series has.
My favorite era has to be friends era. It really does show some heart and standards Sonic and Mario has for each other, even after a decade of rivalry. I hope Sega and Nintendo continues to expand their friendship.
A sonic and mario crossover game would be absolutely revolutionary. As king as they did it right. It needs to have a good mix of development, not specifically Sega or nintendo, the quality of nintendo, the speed and music of Sega, if they mix that all together in a normal classic platformer game with at least a somewhat ok story, that would be the shit. If I ever got a wish it would be that.
@@Vinyboyful That would be the ultimate team up. Eggman & Bowser vs. Sonic & Mario. I'd love to play that. Hell, even the smaller rivals, like Chaos & Wario vs. the duo would still be really cool.
The relationship between an Italian plumber and the world's fastest hedgehog is very compelling. I can't wait to see Shigeru Miyamoto challenge Yuji Naka to an epic fight, just like in the same way as what Iwata and Reggie did and that would be a perfect picture.
Given the Iwata and Reggie one is for the introduction of Mii Fighters in Smash, imagine if for the next Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, we get a trailer of Miyamoto and Naka about to start a 100m in a dark void, and then the lights come on and they're a Mii and a Sonic Forces Avatar (maybe even a bunny one since Sonic started out as one in concept art). That'd be a cool trailer for a cool feature.
@@nsasupporter7557 Yeah. But Sonic has been iconic in his own right, even if he's not as "rad" as he used to be in the 90s. Same thing goes to Mario, but he has improved so far from 8 bit to HD.
Really enjoyed this. Its amazing how mario and sonic went from bitter rivals to friends. I grew up with both of these guys and I’m so happy to see them still rule the video game world. It brings a tear to my eye and a smile to my face.
These two characters have truly changed the gaming market. The rival he is the best on the planet, I am so happy to see these two characters eventually getting along. But one thing we need to revive them, to make them go to their former glory, it’s a crossover game. Not like the Olympic games, or the cameos, we need like,a true Mario and Sonic game. Like, for example, somehow egg man uses the chaos emeralds to transport sonic and tails to another dimension, that dimension being Mario’s dimension. And they have to find a way to gather all the chaos emeralds in the beat egg man, who teamed up with Bowser. That would be really cool. I guarantee you with that if they gave them a crossover game such as the one I just described, it could possibly be the highest grossing video game of all time. Anyway, thank you so much for this video. I genuinely got emotional, and I am so glad to see these two characters I love going back to their former glory. I am positive that, slowly but surely, these characters will dominate the gaming market once again, and when that happens, I can die happy man 😌
@@secondbestjojo1300 I do agree that sonic had a dark age, but when you think about it, 06 and the story book series were his only “bad games”. Sure, some games in the future are mediocre, but not bad by any means
Instead of the chaos emeralds i'd imagine they'd use the phantom ruby. Chaos emeralds nowhere to be seen int he story cause at this point theyre as collectable as standard rocks.
I guess some may call me a Mario guy, but I'm also a fan of Sonic. My first game was Sonic 1 on the Master System, but Mario was the franchise that made me a "gamer" and my favorite one up until this day. I guess I like both series for different, but similar reasons. Style and gameplay. I prefer Mario games in general, as I feel they're better designed and I like how they handle exploration a bit better. I do prefer Sonic's overall style, though (the music, set pieces and stuff). Had Sonic stopped at the classic era, it might come closer to Mario for me (as that's by far my favorite), but I don't know. I do love some Sonic games, but mostly the platformers only. Mario is literally the star of Super Mario and Mario Kart (my two favorite series). There's also Luigi's Mansion, the RPGs and 3D Mario is just top notch. I'm more in a Sonic mood since April, but I'm always going back and forth in what I'm playing. Love the two.
Yeah I think Mario games display more interesting game design and platforming/exploration, but Sonic games just ooze with style and attitude. Whichever I play depends on my mood
I wish they’d make a Sonic and Mario 3D plat-former crossover game. It could be set up like SA2 where each character goes through a similar stage but using their own move set and they’re trying to fight each other, but end up teaming up.
Or maybe even a 2D platformer with a pair-up mechanic, making the player able to use Sonic's speed or Mario's precise platforming and variety of abilities!
Back then, I was always a Mario guy. Then I played Sonic Rush for the first time, my first Sonic title, and my god the sense of speed in that game is insane, I later got Sonic Unleashed for my PS3, and it somehow surpassed that. SEGA is still going strong today not as a video game creator, but as a publisher. Since SEGA owns Atlus, they own the Persona and SMT franchises, which are super big in their own rights. And ofc, they own the Yakuza series, another big hit. Nintendo is still the giant they still are though, the Switch asserting its dominance with it being hard to find PS5's. Plus, the uniqueness of playing a console game on the go is revolutionary, even today. I will definitely, these two companies will stay relevant for a very long time
I love both Mario and Sonic. I never had a favorite between the two, just frustration that Sega decided not to give Sonic the best treatment possible. Heck, I like seeing them work together and I want more games like that.
watching this video makes me want to see a proper mario sonic crossover game thats a platformer or some kind of proper adventure for both of them. hell you could even have part of the story being that mario and sonic dont get along at first but then they eventually team up become friends and stop the bad guys who they were unable to stop alone
@@blasterofbooms I mean I feel nostalgic over my old Xbox 360 but I don't feel emotional and never will feel emotional over it. I guess some people are different
You should read The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers. Seems "a certain rival of Nintendo" went to the process of getting the Yakuza kidnap a Jap dev's sibling to prevent them from working with Nintendo. It's not far fetched: a lot of Jap arcade game developers had to cooperate with the Yakuza as they run the gambling and arcade areas of Japan.
Definitely the Olympic Games were my breaking point to be in love not only with the series but also those two as best friends. I've used to be a HUGE Mario fan more than Sonic even when I've played some Sonic games back in the day (Sonic 2, SA2, etc...) yet, when I've started to play more and more Sonic (Sonic Unleashed) I've started to fall for the Blue Blur himself and then started to day dream about Mario and Sonic being besties and equals in many ways, then the Olympics Games happened and then my love for both became an unhealthy obsession for seeing more Mario and Sonic sharing games. Nowadays, I'm the CEO of #TeamMarionic aka Mario and Sonic's duo name whenever they're together as a team, working together, being dorks and doing goofs together. I love their bromance a ton, and I definitely see them as best friends/bros no matter what Nintendo or Sega do. I even created a community where everyone shares their love for the plumber and the hedgehog being good friends with some cute rivalry for fun. I wish besides the TOGs (The Olympics Games) we could have either an RPG or a platformer with both. It would be amazing.
I've been a fan of both franchises to this day. While I have my issues with both of them for different reasons, they both have always shared the top spot as my favorite franchise. Seeing any nod to the rivalry just puts a smile on my face, whether officially (Olympic Games) or unofficially (SMBZ). Also that Olympic trailer still gives me goosebumps to this day. This applies to Pokemon and Digimon as well . . .
im a giant fan of both series and seeing both characters grow and change with each other and having sonic basically stop a huge monopoly from forming is something we genuinely do not appreciate enough
I can barely remember how my mind was BLOWN when I heard Mario and Sonic had games together (when I was a toddler) and I'm grateful that their early rivalry became a long lasting relationship over the years. This was such a well made video!!! Thank you.
I’m both a Mario and Sonic fan so it just makes me happy the mascots are friends and stuff. Like the companies will always compete or whatever, but if these two were real, they wouldn’t do the same.
So true, if they were actually acting in-character they would most definitely get along, their whole "we're the mascot of these huge gaming companies" aside.
I dont really think Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is Sega’s desperate act, but Nintendo’s pity that their all time rival is about to reach to its end after Sonic 06 happened, to the point where fans have absolute NO faith on Sega since that chaotic moment. Nintendo gave Sega another chance to get back in the spotlight, and I think at that point is where Sega has truly respect Nintendo and sees them as friendly rivals without having to punch it in the gut. Nintendo was pretty much merciful. And to add more positivity, Nintendo was gonna introduce Sonic as the first non Nintendo character in Super Smash Bros Melee, but thats been scrapped off and instead have him in Brawl. Nintendo has always respected Sega even back then, just tend to give jabs after taken some from Sega. Like brothers who would fight but in the end are in good terms as they show to care for each other. Thats how Nintendo and Sega are.
When it comes to newer games, I play Mario. When it comes to a nostalgia trip when I want to hit the classics, I play Sonic. Both have a special place in my heart and I will cherish them forever.
Seeing Mario and Sonic come together in a video game was the equivalent of seeing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny together in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?! Although, speaking of Mickey, it’s surprising Mario hasn’t gotten a chance to cross over with him and his universe. Seeing the relationship between Disney and Nintendo throughout the decades would be fascinating, from the licensed Disney Hanafuda cards to Sora from Kingdom Hearts being included in Smash Bros.
Fun Fact: for some reason in super smash bros brawl story game they had a nintendo rival (aka sonic) save the whole smash universe from tabuu it was pretty cool
Yeah, I missed the times in the '90s in the Console Wars when Mario, Sonic, and especially their SNES/Genesis consoles competed so intensely to create the greatest gaming generation and lasted throughout the decade. It calmed down in the Gamecube era, but AS SOON Mario and Sonic and Olympic Games came out on the Wii, I was SHOCKED. That was something I never thought would happen. It's crazy Mario and Sonic are friends now. I guess Nintendo and Sega grew tired of them going at each other so hard.
Imagine is Sonic and Mario had their own movie together. I know the Sonic The Hedgehog movies are from Paramount and the upcoming Mario movie is from Universal Pictures, I would really love to see these two characters team up in a feature-length film.
The battle between Nintendo and Sega in the 1990s is a tale as old as time itself... if time began in the 1990s, anyway. Excellent work on this. I just love the snappy editing, and this video does a great job at showing how Mario and Sonic's relationship has evolved since they first met!
I grew up loving both Mario and Sonic so It was never difficult for me to pick sides, both have great games and some flops. But, at the end of the day they stood the testimate of time and are super recognizable.
Honestly I enjoyed sonic 06 as a younger kid, it was fun while also having multiple characters fun bosses and cool puzzles it holds a place in my heart that hasn’t been replaced to this day. It was my first sonic game and one of my first experiences in video games.
It's funny how you describe Sonic being the hip new trend during the 90s because back when I was in 5th grade, I got made fun of for having a Sonic The Hedgehog wallpaper by the same kids who would bring their 3DS's to play Mario together. How much the times have changed.
I do like both the Sonic & Mario Series(s)/Franchises including others too, but either way all of them all good too, so it just goes to show that these days we don't need to complete (if/if not necessary) anymore just because that having fun is the main importance/speedruns, just to keep it all together, you just got to get along with it and have fun, anyways I Am Outta Here!!!
I wish that in the PlayStation Invasion era, Nintendo and Sega would team up to make a Mario and Sonic Crossover (not The Olympics) so good, Sony wouldn’t bother to try and beat the two.
I love this analysis! And I love Sonic games! I respect Mario for all his story (in gaming I mean), and being able to watch them be friends like this really makes me drop a smile. Good job on the video man
Your channel is definitely underrated! You deserve so much more subscribers with this high tier & entertaining content! Keep up the good work, love from Sweden!
hi kiro, sweet vidoe dude. i really like your content and you're video essays/recaps from the past of gaming are really entertaining. keep up the goood work dude
I like how with almost every Sonic related game review, they mention the “small blunder” that is Sonic 06. For some reason it always cracks me up because it’s seen as an awkward speed bump to a lot who come across it
Now with Mario Wonder and Sonic Superstars coming out, in the same week no less, it’s cool to see how both franchises are doing something new and unique for their 2D games and I’m equally hyped for both. Can’t wait for the more friendly competition to begin!
sega and Nintendo might be buddies now but there's no way the same thing could happen between sony and Nintendo. They still hate each other till this day.
