Pretty much one of the only times he actually uses it as a screwdriver.

Nice to see they decided to use the original design. In the actual scene Pat had dropped/lost the prop so used a whistle instead lol.

Comically, it's almost completely forgotten about after this one appearance. So that later in the story they are locked in a room, and hairpins are used to pick the lock and not the ubiquitous sonic. I believe it makes one more appearance in the Troughton era in the wargames, again as a simple screwdriver. Some site an earlier uncredited Hartnell appearance of the sonic, as he uses a silver pen like tool with a light on the end, but this may have been a simple pen light. It's not until the Pertwee era it becomes a multi tool.

I can't believe the first time he uses a sonic screwdriver is to unscrew screws. I'm watching classic who for the first time and I was completely blown away by this scene.

First Sonic screwdriver design was just plain with an LED but it needs to look like Ultraman's Beta Capsule.

I wish we could see animation more like the moonbase, and macra terror, those were great! Love the colour versions they do sometimes too!

Years ago, when the BBC produced the _"Years"_ series for _Doctor Who_ as a way of sharing the remnants of incomplete DW stories (beginning with _"Doctor Who: The Hartnell Years"_ hosted by Sylvester McCoy) Tom Baker did his own _Years_ and was hilarious when reminiscing about using the "Sonic Screwdriver" as The Fourth Doctor... TOM BAKER: _"I just had to giggle at the notion of opening that door with the sonic screwdriver. Which, of course, it could open _*_any door in the universe..._*_ Unless of course, it _*_couldn't_*_ open any door in the universe- It depended on the script, and it used to absolutely slay me! It was very difficult keeping my face straight when someone would say, um, 'Use the sonic screwdriver, Doctor...' and then I'd take the thing and go (imitates buzzing noise) [zzz-zzz] and then look frantic and say, 'Even the sonic screwdriver won't open _*_this_*_ door!'"_

I love that the lost stories are being animated; not so sure about this one. Its Grand all the same! :-)

I've been skipping through Classic Who for the first time and just came to the War Games episode and saw 2 use his sonic screwdriver as an ACTUAL SCREWDRIVER and almost fell out of my chair. I knew youtube would help me find the first use of it, as I had apparently missed that episode in my skipping through the seasons. Who knew?? Lol. An actual screwdriver

And so the sonic was born! 🙌

Back in the day, the doctors (2-8) rarely used their screwdrivers. Nowadays they’re used 10 or more times an episode

Also just have Frazer Hines in the outro telling me to subscribe, while he impersonates Troughton! Also, I said it before, I'll say it again- The black and white animation is pointless when we have color settings.
