I love manual focusing and own MF-only lenses, but I’ve gotta admit that’s a damn impressive display of autofocus tech by Sony w/the Sigma adapter. And that’s coming from a loyal Fuji owner lol. Always enjoy your positivity & easygoing-ness as well Jason. Hope the a73 lives up to the hype, and those who buy it really enjoy the heck out of it :).

All I know is after shooting 10 years with Nikon the A7Rii was kick ass future. I just had to try out the A7Riii and I'm pretty sure I'm good for a few years now! Very happy.

I have been following you for a while, ever since you switched to Sony. I’m a canon and Sony shooter. It bothered me that you said that the Sony a7lll is the cheapest body that Sony offers! I shoot with the A7 and also what happened to the A7 ll those are also very good choices.

I've got to rent one of these because this camera is finally the game changer we've been waiting for. I still haven't upgraded to the 5DIV because it is just too much money to justify for my business. If I can actually use this body at events then it will be in my bag this Summer.

does this Sigma MC 11 adapter works with third party canon glass like Tamron and Tokina? I mean like this stuff with the autofocus and stuff

I shoot Canon & occasional Fuji - in many cases doesn't matter much to me, unless it's action/sports or extreme environments (and then it has to be Canon). Switching to Sony won't make much difference either (except when I need a loaner or 24 hour repair 8000 miles from home). I do give Sony a big thumbs up for better dynamic range.

9:40 is incorrect, both Canon and Nikon focus electronically with ultrasonic motors. However until recently all Nikon lenses had a mechanical coupling from the body to the lens for the *aperture mechanism*, unlike Canon that always had built-in mechanism in the lenses. The new E-lenses from Nikon use the same system as Canon, so I guess there will come Nikon-E compatible adapters for Sony bodies eventually.

My only concern is the EVF. How much resolution is in there (is it 4k?) and is it high refresh rate and response time? Can you see the pixels when you look in at it? How dynamic is the screen? Is it OLED? I love these AF ideas but how does it handle in low light and how does it look through the EVF?

Is the metabones better? How is the A7R III in the same situation? As good as the A7 III?

As I mentioned in the past, I enjoy most of Jason's videos and his work. What I personally don't like, and this is not specifically aimed at Jason, but to all people who say this model will get the people to switch. Sony A7iii appears to be a fantastic camera, and it has peaked my interest. Why is it that every new camera that comes out, everything else but the D850 is no longer good? The selling point for Canon users is that Canon lens appears to work well with the newer Sony's. With that said, when did we reach the point that work being produced by any of the Canon bodies all of a sudden become junk when in recent memory, many recognized quality photographs came from Canon bodies. I am as frustrated as anyone by Canon being slower than anyone else when it comes to meaningful updates. I guess the PENTAX K-1 II update makes Canon seem fast. If you want real 4K you have to go to the professional video line. It ticks me off as well. Why does this video have to have a title that this will be the reason why Canon owners switch? Why can't it stand on its own merit? Sony has been hitting out of the park lately, but in my opinion I don't think getting or implying Canon users to switch is warranted for a video unless you worked directly for Sony. It gives the strong impression, (I understand it was not meant to be that way), of being a sales pitch for Sony. I remember people knocking Nikon and that they were dying not to long ago. Then along the D500 and D850 came along and now its difficult to get the D850. Maybe Canon will come out with something innovative. If not, I have options. If you were enjoying your photography before and were getting excellent results and more importantly your clients love, how can a pitch for another brand make you stuff all of a sudden be less attractive? Canon does need more dynamic range and better noise handling at higher ISO's, but in my opinion the 5D series and the 1dx are still excellent bodies. Please understand this is not an attack, just an opinion. Look forward to the next instructional video.

Great video Jason. Please do a test of video auto-focus of the A7iii with Canon glass. The A7iii auto-focus and Canon glass works great for photos, but will it work for videos? As a filmmaker, I don't want to replace my $8K+ of Canon glass if I can avoid it.

I don't understand all the anger, pitting Sony against Canon. With the A7iii, you can have the best of both, Sony mirrorless at a reasonable price and use your Canon glass. Love it.

Canon and Nikon need to release a competitive product fast before many more photographers swap brands. Canon and Nikon feel like they are holding back whereas Sony seem to be ramming every feature they can into the new bodies.

I shoot with a Sony A77m2 and would like to upgrade to the A7iii. I only have three lenses - all Sony a-mount... would you recommend keeping those lenses and use them with an adapter? Or actually let me rephrase... what features or quality would I loose in the a7iii by using it with an adapter and my a-Mount lenses? I readfrom a last year post that the a7iii will freeze when using MC-11 and a canon lens when using continuous autofocus, it that still happening?

Folks, what Jason is saying here is absolutely true. I shoot Canon and have wanted to try to switch but don't want to lose all my Canon glass and don't want to spend as much as the A7RIII and A9 cost to try and make the switch. With these features at this price point, and with the autofocus upgrades and adapters now making the Canon lenses very viable to use on the A7III it is the perfect camera to try and take the plunge. I am definitely buying it next month when it is released. And if you think I am alone, think again. Majority of the Canon and Nikon shooters are frustrated waiting for all these features. The timing for this camera along with the feature set at this price point is brilliant. This camera is going to be record setting for sales, easily will be best selling of 2018 and going to hit Canon and Nikon hard. Jason, can you also show the Metabones V adapter with the Canon L glass as I have heard that is the best option (or do you recommend the Sigma MC 11 over it? I have no Sigma glass presently). I switched today! Sold my Canon bodies and got the A73 + Metabones mk V adapter. Thanks for clarifying the 85 1.2 rounding issue. The Metabones also rounds this up to 1.3. It's just unbelievable what this camera offers for the price. Canon makes some incredible glass. So far I have used 85/1.2L, 135/2L, Sigma 35 Art (Canon), 16-35/4L and the 100/2.8L Macro. They all work flawlessly with the Sony and the adapter. In the long run I might opt for some Sony lenses, but where I live they are vastly more expensive than their Canon counterparts so there is absolutely no rush. This new camera is just... wow! This is the "5D mark II moment" all over again. Revolutionary stuff.

My friend still using canon 5d mark II shooting wedding photos. It is not he has no money to upgrade. It is just the camera is just fine.

Sony A7 III is 2.500 EUR in Slovenia (body only) and lenses are too expensive in comparison with Fuji. If you live in the USA the price is reasonable.

Jason... Could you possibly run a test with this camera on Nikon Lenses.. I know in 2016 you did it with mixed results but hopefully it has improved.. I'm really considering buying this camera but want to use my nikon lens for now till I can get Sony lenses.

I have a question. I'm sure it's probably just a basic question. I think you said if recording in 4K 30fps it crops in about 20%. If I used a Sony 16-35mm lens. Would I multiply the 16-35mm by 1.2 and the outcome will be the lens will become equivalent to 19.2mm - 42mm?

Canon first FF mirrorless camera at whatever price point (>3000$ or a little bit above 2300$) will probably be a very good photography camera and a good video camera, but looking at their last releases (5D IV, 6D II, G1X III, M50) Canon will probably give us some cons where people - again - moan "Why, Canon, why? The camera is good, but why did you cripple this or that compared to (even older) competition or your own cameras?". Canon's sales are doing well but over the last years they are gambling more than ever with their reputation. It's happening slowly, but it is happening. Some 2000$ or 3000$ Sony cameras will hurt Canon just a little bit but once Sony releases the next versions of the A6000 or A5100 in that price segment, thing's will get funny.

1:37 sony a7iii is not the cheapest Full frame, there are the a7 and a7ii that are cheaper...

How much better is the III compared? I have the A7II and using it with a Canon 135 f2 - as soon as they light dimmed and it got less contrasty, it was hopeless.

So much hype about the new cameras every 6 months! It’s all BS.......the last generation and the one before that all get the job done.....thank God I left the gear race a good few years ago.....I sympathise with those constantly selling, losing so much just to get the latest marketing hype, slightest increment......I appreciate you’re making Sony rich Jason.....and I love your stuff. You do actually show your work which I respect....BUT as for every new camera changing photography forever is BS. My XT2’s will still be getting shots as good as all these folk dumping their gear for many years to come.

Many Canon users will not shift to Sony due to poor ergonomics, using heavy lenses on a smaller body, poor after sale services and resale value in most parts of the world, vendor's still hesitant to stock Sony products. I'm willing to forgo all these issues, only if Sony improves its Color science. Canon colors are still superior to Sony and Nikon and on a two dimensional screen and paper, that's all you see. Yes you can work on post and correct the colors but time is precious commodity.

I thnk this might be the time where I leave Canon and make a step change to Sony. But the only thing thats preventing me doing it, is there lack of lens selection.

Canon and Nikon have some dignity and just stop producing incompetent Camera bodies. Swallow pride and just become the next 3rd party lens manufacturer for Sony cause you've obviously lost already to Sony. I mean come-on, you can barely touch the performance and feature of this entry level FF camera body from Sony.

Sony uses a very tiny childish grip that is so uncomfortable to use unless you have little hands. Their lenses are disproportionally huge and lets be honest the design of their cameras are not great, lacking big in that department. Jason is clearly getting paid very well by Sony for these reviews so I would take them with a grain of salt.

Great Video, Honestly I did try the Sony A7111 on two weddings, great image quality, AF was great! But hated the menus and ergonomics. Coming from Lieca M, I found Fuji XH1 much easier and more suited to the way I like my settings to be. The only thing I miss is the occasionally shallow depth, although when you need more depth of field, th XH1 being a crop sensor wins in that scenario, every system has its pros and con’s image though was very Similiar. Although the Fuji jpgs where better but Sony’s raw files have the edge in dynamic range. If Sony could only add a few more dials, especially for ISO that may sway me back..

I’m blown away! I’ve been wanting to switch, but the lens issue has kept from changing over. Knowing canon lenses work seamlessly (with an adapter of coarse) with the a73, I’m going to seriously plan out how to invest in the new Sony. Thanks Jason.

Jason, well done. Great video. I was holding out on upgrading my Canon but this convinced me to make the switch. The best thing about this is I'm able to go out with my large format film camera and the Sony in a manageable pack. Previously with the Canon it was so much weight. This made a noticeable difference in my pack for sure!

Keep running into posts where they say putting a monitor on the A7III will damage it yet here it is used by one of the most amazing photographers there is!

As soon as Sony fix the menu system and make eye af work with a half shutter press I’ll switch. With Sony it seems to be great but so many tiny faults like the battery life, poor weather sealing, crappy menu system, having to enable 3 different things for eye af to even work, you have to use mechanical shutter at 1/1000 plus other wise the bokeh is blotchy ext
