My final thoughts on the Sony A9. Review is up at www.stevehuffph... Order it at Amazon: amzn.to/2sx5x4O Order at B&H: www.bhphotovid... VOIGTLANDER LENS 50 3.5: shop.cameraque...
When considering what's gained (and lost) compared to the A7rii, the A9 does look too expensive pre-purchase. But only one week after succumbing to the financial pain and buying one, I found the "pain" went away. Yes, it's still expensive, but using it makes the cost feel far more justifiable. Perhaps a camera that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. I'm dead happy with mine (and no overheating or banding either - woohoo).
That post is from May 5th, and I'm not sure what "sony support" means on B&H. It could be B&H employee that is Sony specialist. A7SII doesn't shoot 10 bit
ObelixCMM thanks for the correction. It was stuck in my mind that the a7s does 10 bit from the Mark-I days when you'd have to shoot 4k using HDMI which gave 10 bit color. as for the answer on B&H, if you read his other answers you'd presume he is actually a Sony rep. yes it is a month old answer and I didn't notice, thanks again for correcting my mistake. I hope we'll hear something official from Sony regarding an update soon.
Hi there, I really need to ask you this. I'm working right now with the a77 and 99 line of cameras for weddings and they're both performing extremely well. My question is, I'm considering going with the a9 because of the silent shutter, the 20 fps among other things, but I'm doubting A LOT because of the AF. Every single example of a wedding I see is in bright day light, nobody seems to shot weddings at night like I do, so, I haven't really seen an AF test from the a9 during a dancing party, with smoke and lights and all of that for example. Have you tried the camera in those situations? Can it track the faces and subjects well enough? I have a lot of doubts in this regard because I can't use the assist lamp from my flashes with mirrorless cameras so, I believe you understand my hesitation. I hope you can answer me. Thanks in advance
SuperDigitalMe Well, it is intended to compete against the D5 and 1D mark II, which cost around $6-6.5k. So pricing wise it is far from a joke, it is actually relatively cheap for the market it is aimed at. If that is too much for you then wait a few months until the slightly scaled down versions in the form of the a7 mark 3 series starts to arrive.
Just to make it clear since I am originaly from Europe and living in USA.$4500 price is before sales tax which in across europe varies between 20-25 percent and IS included in the price! $4500 is price for the item in the shelf, once you take it to the register, you have to add sales tax. In other words you can't take it out of the store for 4500.
Thanks for the review. May I please ask which adapters u use for M mount and Voigtländer lenses? Now for the important stuff: If u fire raw at max speed, how long does it take until buffer is cleared if filled? May u continue shooting during buffer is clearing, or must u wait until buffer has been written down to card completely before u can continue shooting? Does it have the same design flaw and sucking humid air by copper cooling plate into camera for self destruction - as a7rii does?
Roland Rick I think he uses the Voightlander close focus adapter. I have one and it's good because you can get a lot closer to the subject with those m mount lenses.
I have to assume, that you are ex Avionics or Military, since they are the only people, who understand what " Getting to the point " means... All your clips, start right off, right there , on the subject ! Unlike a lot of these kid tossers, that spend 20 mins talking about why , they are going to do, this review By then, most focused people, looking for answers, wil have killed their clip, after the first 8 seconds, since we know, just by the babbel, that we are going to waste a load of internet time, listening to some idiot, who is going to ramble on & on ! RU-vid, should issue some sort of guideline, to making clips ! Anyway, thats not your fault ! You, as allways, are spot on, from the moment the camera starts rolling !
Spawn Brimstone excels until the real fashion, wedding portrait camera comes out like the A7riii or A9r. Boy are they promoting this as any other photography camera after they realized not many sportshooters are switching anytime soon.
ekphotography, well, duhh...of course there's going to be the next big thing from Sony...it's called evolution. Something Canon and Nikon should consider. Why the hell do yo think nobody talks about them anymore. They are clunky and archaic. And, pro photographers have been switching. Lol, A9 has been barely out for 2 weeks and already you're making denial-informed predictions. Sports shooters will be switching.
Spawn Brimstone No, I actually made the prediction before it was released. Not many are going to fork out 4500 for a "sports" geared camera, most wedding, fashion, portrait and landscape photographers are going to wait for the the A7riii or A9r which ever it may be. My opinion, so mind your own. If they eventually put Slog they will certainly sell more camera and most likely be forced to when sales are not what they expected, I also predicted that the day it was announced and they stated no S-log profile and there are already rumors they might put it in with a firmware update. So I am 2x2 on my predictions so far.
I know a couple of high end wedding photographers who shoot with the 1DX and the D5 line. The a9 is basically the same breed of camera. They are all telling me they are super excited on what the Sony will bring to the table.
I didn't say they weren't Japanese DICKHEAD! Japan DOESN'T want any foreign country buying into Nikon! GOT IT??? Fuji is being asked by the Japanese government to invest in Nikon who are having troubles. www.fujirumors.com/japanese-goverment-wants-fujifilm-help-suffering-nikon-company-says-japanese-report/
Vintagehorizonsss Tv in order to compare a full frame Mirrorless to a smartphone camera, you'd have to shoot with one focal length (28mm) and infinite depth of field. you'd also have to shoot both on JPEG. now, that's not what you'd buy a $5K ILC for. you'd buy an ILC in order to be able to use Zoom or fast prime lenses. in order to have flexibility in choosing the depth of field, or lack thereof. in order to be able to tweak the hell out of a RAW file, adjust exposure and color. these things aren't possible with a smartphone camera.

Too expensive. There are options available on the market with a similar or better performance for Wildlife / action / sport at lower price. Biggest issue is in my opinion the lens selection @ Sony which is especially for Wildlife quite insufficient. I don't like adapter as they never perform at a level I can accept and that is also not different on the A9 (tried it with multiple adapter). Technically the A9 simply does not convince me. And what made me leave Sony was the experience I made with the repair service of Sony: for a small repair of the shutter my camera disappeared for 4 months and for 1 one month Sony did not even know where it is, the tracking number was invalid. Thanks a lot, Sony!
Your argument is not convincing. What brand and model are you referring to that costs less and performs better for wildlife / action / sports photography ? Repair experience? Better search the web for a broader understanding whether Sony has a problem. I would not take ONE person's word for it.
