Join award winning wedding photographer Jason Lanier for his first wedding at Taber Ranch in Northern California where he used the Sony A9 for the first time in what he believes to be the first wedding in the world shot with the new camera. PLEASE THUMBS UP, SHARE, LEAVE A COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE!
PLEASE NOTE: This wedding was shot on May 19, 2017.
This wedding was part of a REAL Wedding Workshop where Jason brings students to learn and shoot at a real wedding. In this video Jason uses the 70-200 G Master, 16-35 Sony Zeiss, 35mm Sony Zeiss lenses.
Please note that Jason experienced no overheating or overheating warnings from the camera despite it being a very hot day (over 90 degrees) and they were in direct sunlight for hours.
We thank you for watching and invite you to stick around and watch a few more while you're here....
Thanks!
Jason Lanier Photography

I shot entire wedding by Sony a6000 with no issues, fast autofocus even during low light. IMHO a9 is much better than a6000. So many Sony haters just don't want to see a great Sony camera out there, you guys need to check your mental health before you complain the camera even you never put your finger on it :)

nitrowad I watch Amar the hater videos and he is full of crap, nothing he says is real so you really referenced the wrong person. He says i like Sony and i want Sony to make it, i almost bought the A9 but not anymore lol but laughing and always saying bad stuff about Sony and Jason, he's a hater for real, he says i want Sony to make it, I have Sony cameras lmbo he has Canon and you will always see him popping it up to say this is better, this is a real camera lmbo and then the truth comes out as he bashes Sony and Jason for supporting Sony. That guy is scandalous and low class.

@Michael he had some good points about the video, since this video's title is about overheating, and how it's not happening, but actually isn't a real test where we can see that it's not overheating but patched up video of the event, which btw. seems weird - who in the world would like a photographer to teach other photographer how to shoot... ON THEIR WEDDING??? Are you kidding me? If this ain't stage, then I feel sorry for the newlywed couple... Anyways, all people are discussing issues that Sony admitted (we still don't know the scale of the issue - how much cameras has been hit by it), but the problem is that there are a lot of fanboys that take things personal. I shoot Canon, Fuji, Samsung. I tried Nikon and Sony - didn't like them. I'm not saying they are bad, just didn't like them, but people have to be open minded for critique (whether it's a subjective or objective thing). For example - subjectively I don't like Nikon colors (not in RAW files, not in JPEGs) - that's subjective. I hate Canon focusing issues, and especially 3rd party lens focusing issues (on other systems too) - that's objective. I don't like how Fuji measures ISO. Samsung has poor range of lenses and died cause of mediocre camera system. I didn't like Sony colors, or just the experience when using the camera (placement of buttons, settings, etc) - that's subjective. Sony A9 advertised as sports camera having overheating issues when shooting in warm day, and having banding when using electronic shutter (5fps on mechanical - a joke for sports camera) - that's objective. JL can't say negative things about Sony (he never did, although there are some Sony cameras with notorious issues). Some other channels can't say negative stuff about other brands (or multiple brands) cause they are sponsored, etc. Do you get my point now? In this case, it's about Sony, but it's not a war on Sony, I will also critique the brands I'm using for issues they are having or if they false advertise something, and everyone should do it. And if you ask why, the answer is simple - if we all raise are voice and critique the bad stuff, these things will get corrected, and brands will do more QA, and we will end up with brands releasing better cameras.

Thank you for the video Mr. Lanier. It is quite amazing seeing how you compose your amazing photographs! This is the first time I have looked at your comments section, and I have no clue why there is so much hate. You never put down people who use different gear, but people seem to want to criticize you for your gear and not your results. And, although your reviews do come across as advertisements sometimes, reviewing the gear never seem to be the focus of your videos. I like how you talk about your gear, but you don't say that you can't get similar results with different gear. Instead, you show how your gear makes your life better, and you tell people to find gear that works for them. Once again, thank you for your videos!

I do enjoy your work, but lately these videos seem more like Sony commercials. If the videos concentrated more on the work without throwing in the Sony plugs, it would be so much better. If the person behind the camera has the talent, then the system used is not as important. As I have mentioned previously, Sony is doing a good job enhancing their line. This will only push Canon and Nikon which will push Sony and we all win not matter what we use. I think what irks non-Sony users is when people describe items such as the joy stick, dual card slots, auto-focusing system, high frame rate as if these features were not on other camera systems first or in my opinion that is how it comes across. I can only speak for Canon, these have been around for some time and Sony is catching up. We can debate the focusing systems between the two systems, Canon lets you choose how to handle the two card slots, (dual write or auto switch for example), don't know how many times in portraits or weddings I would want to rapid fire the 1DX. I am not saying that Sony isn't doing a good job, but those items are not revolutionary. 5 axis stabilization, that is something Canon and Nikon should do. The Pentax people have had that advantage for some time and Sony has done a nice job by implementing that feature. While I see nothing wrong with using the A9 for weddings even though Sony advertises it as a Pro body for sports and wildlife, it comes across as Sony users trying to justify the camera due to the lack of long Pro lenses for sports and wildlife. Strong Sony offerings will only help us Canon and Nikon folks as hopefully they will get a wake up call. You mentioned in many videos that it doesn't matter what equipment you use, which I totally agree with. I really do enjoy your work, but lately I feel that you are spending a large amount of time pushing the Sony product more than your work which should be what is highlighted in these videos. It comes across as if you are not using Sony, then how can you possibly be getting great results with something else. Again in my opinion, many of us are missing out on the talent you can share because its appears lately to be how Sony is helping you get those results when it really is just your ability. You may say that it doesn't matter what camera you use and I believe inside you feel that way, but outwardly, you keep praising Sony as if they are the perfect system.

You are the living proof that gear is irrelevant when you know what you're doing. You are also the living proof that most of the crap and smearing thrown towards Sony mirrorless cameras are either fabrications or incompetence. There are no "perfect" cameras, only people that master their craft and bold people that will push it further. Keep up JL. You inspire me.

I was one of the attendees at this workshop. Jason is incredibly talented, dedicated (maybe obsessed), and the hardest working artisan in the photography community. The only way to truly understand is to GO TO A WORKSHOP AND SEE!!! The overheating claim is absurd and nonsense, wasn’t ever even a consideration so I’m not going to talk about it. I spent a huge amount of time behind Jason’s shoulder. I’m the guy talking to him at 9:55 in the video. Jason is totally open about everything he does. As you can see we went through a ton of his shots straight off the camera (yes some were not keepers) and we talked about what went right and what went wrong during the entire shoot (for us both). Jason is totally above board with everything he does. All he really wants to do is push the art of photography forward. Beyond his own work, beyond the vendors, beyond the trolls, he really just wants to celebrate the art and its artists, and help teach you to be a better photographer. Again, go to a workshop and it will all become clear to you. Thanks for all your help Jason!

Jason, I shoot with a Sony A7, A7R, and A7RII, 5 degrees to 105, and never has a body overheat. I shoot on the coast and in the rain--no problems. I shoot in the mountains and in the sandy desert. A bunch of internet BS if you ask me. Further, I generally shoot with 2 cameras switching the bodies on the same tripod. The original A7R with a Canon 55mm F1.2 keeps up with the A7RII, sometimes best the new body. In lightroom or photoshop, I need to read which camera the photo was taken with. Remember--when it come to lights, or lighting--you are the man!!!

It's interesting reading these year+ old posts. I have a Canon 5DIII as well as a Sony a6000. Which one gets more use? The Sony. I like that it's significantly lighter than the Canon. The controls and learning to shoot with it was a bit different at first, but I got through it. The colors are great. The images are sharp. Lightroom works with the Sony Raw files. What's not to like? An a9 must be fricking heaven to work with.

I wish that you could talk in some detail about the Sony focusing modes and which ones you prefer or which modes you use most often. I am now a Sony shooter having moved from Nikon in the last month. Am I happy I switched? Yes I am, Sony lenses give me high contrast, intense color, and sharpness from wide open to F16. However focus modes on Nikon and Sony a7rii are totally different and has taken some practice on my part to get what I need. I hope you can do a video or something to help some us who may be focus challenge. Thanks, Art

Just a quick note: Both my wife and I were at that workshop in Napa with Jason. Either both of us, or one of us, were next to Jason for the entire 8-10 hours of shooting. He never said anything about the A9 overheating at any point during the entire day. He never had to stop shooting, or hand the camera over to his crew, because it stopping working or had an overheating warning. The A9 worked all day like a champ. It never stopped working. It was HOT. 93 degrees during the ceremony on top of a hill with no cover, no shade and no clouds. Post-ceremony shots were out in the open for at least another 1 plus. I saw the camera battery life meter, the shot meter, and all the technical aspects and shooting scenarios with my own two eyes from 3 feet away. Just as he detailed and listed it in the vlog. It's all accurate.

@jcrpisces
@jcrpisces 7 лет назад
It was a real wedding, and his Real Wedding Workshop. There was a team of 10 photographers for a two day schedule. During the second day, the actual wedding, we followed him with all of our own cameras as he would take moments throughout the day to show us shots he took, the metering, the battery life, etc. We felt we definitely got our money's worth by watching him, his workflow, his approach and philosophies that he shared, how he worked with the couple, with his gear, and so on. Additionally we get to keep all the shots we took ourselves throughout the two days and keep them for our own portfolio. Both my wife and I felt we learned a lot. As a matter of fact, we had a wedding booked to shoot a week later, this last weekend. We applied a lot of what we learned from Jason to this wedding and got better shots than we've gotten before. So, our images that we take has already stepped up in quality and production value significantly as a direct result of his teaching. We have 14 more wedding lined up this summer and Fall. That's going to up our game to create some really amazing stuff for our portfolio. As a causal effect, we'll be able to charge more for our services and therefore make the money back that we paid for the workshop. Subsequently, we'll more money in the long run, have happier clients, get more gigs and attract higher end clients who have more money to spend.

This was someone's wedding, their day and Jason is bringing 10 photographers to conduct a workshop? Are you serious? This is a wedding, not a news conference. Would you like to have 11 photographers following you everywhere on your wedding day...................and they kept the pictures of you and your wife?To say that doing so is rude and disrespectful to the broom and bride, their families and friends is an understatement. By the way, Jason asks how can people talk about the A9 without even having their hand on it and actually using it. I guess that goes for the same people who said that this camera was a DSLR killer and looking at the specs BEFORE the camera was even releases. All I can say, get yourself an A9 if you don't have it yet and use it. Good luck with it and your weddings. Perhaps you can run your workshops at those 14 weddings. I'm sure the newlyweds will appreciate it.

Very nicely done. Excellent photos, great performance from the A9 also! Honestly I am very excited about A9! 1. Just wondering, somebody below claiming to have been with you throughout the workshop said they had to pay for being in the workshop? I don't really know but maybe that's how it works. 2. Write 300mb and read 299mb? How much does that UHS card cost? 3. Living proof of no overheating and sustainable battery. True. A freshly charged, brand new battery, turning camera off while not shooting, etc, should do the trick. How about using a half-lifed battery, like most of us laymen do? Or I could just ignore the temp. warning and keep shooting, as the camera should continue to work until it shuts down. I think Sony simply forgot to put in a bigger heatsink, or using a bigger metal body to help dissipate heat. 4. A9 plus G Master lens would cost how much? A9 is a good camera, I believe, because so many new technologies are implemented. New technology, plain and simple, but it doesn't mean Canon or Nikon or all the other brands are shamed by Sony. Canon and Nikon and other brands have come a long way, and Sony catches up because they don't have the burden of the old system (plus a lot of advertising). Also, it seems people just forget about A99 ii! Having said that, I still wouldn't dump my old 7D and 5DSR and all my Canon or Sigma lenses just to catch that Sony bus (also I simply despise adapters). Too much cost to fully convert, that's the truth; so maybe all the other brands are like useless dinosaurs to Sony lovers, but unfortunately not to me. 5. BTW that drone renders A9's silent mode meaningless lol. Honestly I am not a big fan of the simulated shutter sound; call me old-school, but I just don't think cameras are cameras without the real shutter sound, not saying I don't appreciate that 20 fps though... It is amazing!

I just noticed that you were only using one camera and swapping lenses. I use prime lenses at weddings (35mm & 85mm) and on two occasions I was told that I was not professional for swapping lenses. Once time Someone in the crowd said they were studing photography at university so i offered them my camera to take over the shoot but they just backed off.

I noticed that during the posed shots you used the strobe camera left throwing light from the direction of the sun. Why wouldn't you use it camera right, to fill from the shadow side?
