Sorry all, I must make a correction! THE SONY A9 IS WEATHER SEALED, FULLY! I have been using so many cameras lately that I somehow misspoke about this. SO yes, the A9 is fully sealed unlike the A7 series before it. Mistakes happen, and I apologize!
The Leica SL may, in any case", have more robust "weather sealing"... as reflected in this water proof test comparing the latest NIkon, Sony, Canon, and Olympus... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c7BG74w0gAw.html
I have both, I purchased my SL used last year with the 24-90 zoom. Love it great pride of ownership which the Sony does not have yet I did purchase the A9 with battery grip and the 70-200/2.8 GM lens because I do shoot a loot of sports in the winter and the SL is just not fast enough in regards to CAF and as much as I love the Leica 90-280 the IQ is amazing, though handling of this lens is just to big and heavy to handhold
I’m a leica user from X series to SL, i just love leica cameras, its in the photographer to shoot not the camera 😂 my setup on my SL is Noctilux-M F/0.95 50mm lens
Not everyone is worried about the cost. I for one always like to buy the best. I need a wider lens and 24-90 won't do. you only have to pick one up and you will feel the difference to the toy feeling Sony. I have the a7r2
According to Sony www.sony.com/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-9/specifications it has "Reliable dust- and moisture-resistant design" The Leica is the worse value no point in buying it. If I don't shoot sports I would go for the medium format Fuji or Hassy.
I heard "overpriced Leica Junk" somewhere in the comments and laughed, it is NOT junk, the SL is a good camera and to some it may be valued as a high end luxury product, the market exists, nothing wrong in that. Leica have done a good job in maintaining their business and legacy since the digital age crept in, even if Leica cameras of today are not the de facto benchmark as professional 'tool' cameras. However, I fully respect the fight that they are putting up to tune and shape a business model that maintains their legacy, the relevance of products like the Leica SL, and their heritage line. Leica knows enough people are still prepared to pay not only for access to the legendary quality of lenses and camera construction, but also for their undoubted provenance within the history of photography over the last 100 years, their business model still works. Sony are pioneers in electronic consumer products development (Walkman, CD, etc...) and in economy of scale manufacture, not the camera optics and mechanical camera technology innovation that made Leica famous. Like Nikon, Canon (SLR, DSLR etc...) and countless others, the camera has simply passed through Sony realm of expertise and this is their time to play and reap what they can from applying their electronics technological know-how to the 2-century old camera concept that Leica had already mastered in their own way during their time at the helm. The Sony camera division has done an outstanding job in putting the 'old guard' pioneering camera specialists in the shade. In recent years they even hit Leica out of the park a few times with cameras that blazed a trail in versatility, features, etc... and so they should in todays digital electronics age, this is their stomping ground. The Sony A9 is not meant to be a high end luxury product, on their economy of scale the quality of build, materials and construction is not going to match the SL, but the exemplary electronics camera technology mated with an excellent lens range does make it a benchmark professional tool camera for today. However, In the decades to come it could be Sony who may fight to maintain relevance even as a 'luxury' brand in any of their product lines, whilst some other upstart runs rings around them with their expertise in tomorrows hot technology area applied to one of Sonys own heritage line during their golden digital age. What was yesterdays cheap tool that was fit for purpose might become tomorrows costly luxury, fit for usurpers, nothing wrong with that, thats progress.
Sony took over Minolta's camera production so they more or less have a history too. Ironically Leica and Minolta cooperated for one or two decades starting with the R3/XE7
Really??? You can Buy a Sony a6000 or a7 (if you want full frame) for 300-400$ or 600-700$ respectively (adapt any beautiful lens you want) and take the same pictures as you would with those 2!!! Oh and who buys a 4500$ camera for Vlog???? Also why if you love taking photos you should buy the SL? 6000$??????????? With these king of money you can buy 3 bodies Sony a7R mark 2!!!!!!!!!
It's his / their money, they can do whatever they want. On topic, I have the A7R2, and I absolutely love it. As such I don't see any reason why I should get the SL since the R2's 42MP sensor is really in a class of its own. However, I too jumped on the A9 because it complements the R2 really well, since the R2 sometimes misses focus, especially when I'm taking photos of my kids, dogs, sports, and action.
I cannot agree more with you and it makes total sense if you have the R2 to buy A9 for pure speed! Obviously they can do whatever they want with their money, it's just that it doesn't make any sense to buy that camera for vlog! Or recommending the SL only for pure photography lovers???? I am a pure photography lover and i have the a6000 and a7! Sometimes i even use the Galaxy s7 edge i love every bit of it!
If you cant afford the best then you cant have one. they are made for people that have the money and want to reward themselves. Just walk into a shop and hold a Leica. It feels fabulous.
point taken... if it was the best then sure!!! I have a lot of rich friends and they don't even bother. Photography is about experience not name!!!! and the evolution of camera systems should make your life easier so that you can take beautiful pictures.... don't think that's the case with Leica! Recently i gave my a6000 to a friend that has a Leica for a week.... imagine what happened;) Oh and you know how i feel that my 500$ camera can take better pictures that a 6000$ camera? If you consider lens as well then a 10000$ system! Ouch!
I think Leica SL's color is better than M10 and SL photos have a crispness much better than M10. I have M10 but missed Leica Q's crispness and I think SL has it also.
The sound better on the SONY but the look and feel on the picture on the Leica is much better than the A9 the color science in the Leica is much better.
The Leica SL has very few native full frame lenses and I doubt if it will ever have many. On the other hand the Sony a9 has all the basic prime or zoom lenses a professional needs. The Sony cameras have fast technological depreciation. That's not the case with Leica cameras. Beyond the usefulness of a Leica SL, it is a very well made and beautiful camera. It will have some value after many years. I wouldn't say the same thing for the cameras of Sony a7 series and the a9. Nowadays there is a saturation with mirrorless cameras. Every major manufacturer constructs mirrorless cameras. From the Pentax, Nikon with their small sensors to the Hasselblad and Fuji with their medium format sensors. In 2010 people had to chose between no more than five maybe a little more mirrorless cameras from Sony, Olympus/Panasonic. The camera bodies of Leica SL and TL mirrorless cameras aren't very expensive. Their native Leica SL and TL lenses are very very expensive. The Sony FE e-mount lenses have a reasonable price which is comparable to the equivalent Canon Nikon lenses. By the way the present and future lenses that are fully compatible with the Leica SL are: APS-C TL: Primes Summicron-TL 1:2 / 23 ASPH. Summilux-TL 1:1.4 / 35 ASPH. APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 1:2.8 / 60 ASPH. Zoom Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 1:3.5-4.5 / 11-23 ASPH. Vario-Elmar-TL 1:3.5-5.6 / 18-56 ASPH. Full format SL: Prime Summicon-SL 1:2 / 35 ASPH. Summilux-SL 1:1.4 / 50 ASPH. APO-Summicon-SL 1:2 / 75 ASPH. APO-Summicon-SL 1:2 / 90 ASPH. Zoom Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 1:3.5-4.5 / 16-35 ASPH. Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4 / 24-90 ASPH. APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4 / 90-280
You have my respect for recommending a camera for the romantic soul. There are many camera reviews out there. But I have not heard a recommendation for the romantics before. I cannot afford it today. But some day, I will get it :)
The point of being passion in photography is about to capture a moment, if theres no speed theres no moment, or you can make your moment by saying to the people please be still for a couple second for me to adjust the lens.. 😂😂😂 but SL is quite better than the other leica because theres some auto focus
What about the viewfinder? I know that the Sonny A9 is improved, but is it as good as the SL?. A side note, if your passion maybe, but if you work with it the Sony can go from a wedding to a sports arena, from portrait to landscape, wildlife to air shows. But I will agree with you that the images from the Leica look different, they are special. Of course, you can battle to Sony picture to look like the Leica's but you could be shooting or doing something with your family. I believe that the reason they lower the price could be the X1D. If one has a camera for work (say a nice Canon, Sony or Nikon) and you want a camera for love and passion, to be creative and not client oriented, an SL looks perfect (film is another option). But the X1D is even more diferent (one is looking to refresh creativity) and the price is similar. Is less of a workhouse, but the point is: you don't need it to be a workhouse, but a love affair.
I really appreciate other reviews from you, especially about the a7s but really.... Theres no 85 and 35 1.4 and half of the Leica primes are only announced. Mostly slower sure pricey. The only thing striking me AS interesting is the 90-280 . also you left silentshutter and ibis out....color. I bet with a one time effort of 1hour many could get a "Leica" lightroom preset for the a9. Its unfortunately one of these Leica reviews.

why... WHY only 720P... I hope im only one who watching few seconds of this on 4K in full screen.
Basically ask yourself this question, do you want quality and the experience of photography? Get the Leica. You want an all around camera for the actual image the camera takes get the a9.
If you buy the Leica you buy it for the best lenses in the world. The "Leica look" is in the lenses, I would buy into the system and deal with the minor short-comings of the camera for the lenses in a heartbeat if I could drop 12k on lenses.
But then why not just by the leica lenses and then adapt them to a sony body? I'm a sony shooter and that's more or less what I'm trying to determine by watching these videos.
That could be a viable option if you already have the Sony and like it. Personally, and this is just me, I'm not planning to invest in a Sony based on the customer service I've personally had with other Sony products. If you're happy with your Sony I would see if the E mount to L mount adapter could be had in a smart adapter to support autofocus and have at it. You probably know all M lenses are manual.
sina RaziZadeh You have no clue what you are talking about. The Leica SL is much more enjoyable to shoot with, or just hold it in the hands let alone image quality that is much better (not only in terms of color). If you dont care about that (like many) shure the Sony is the better camera for you.
Elderin Moi Thanx Edrin to answer. I think color of Leica is like old fashioned Canon color. It's so warm and yellowish. Style that Canon itself has changed it and corrected in new cameras like 5D mark iv. Leica has great cameras but not for today.
How's the timeline of the TL lens? When will new lens O king out and does TL camera has future or they will kill it like R series and release new lineup?
I can tell you that the vertical grip is not fully sealed. I shot it in SE Asia and did find some (not much) rain in the battery area after being outside in monsoon rain for 4 hours or so. It was definitely wet in there though - on both the cameras I was shooting.
VariTimo I have the a7r3 and its a perfect size for my Ronin being small but I am waiting for a new 1DX to catch up and Ill go back to the larger form factor. I would leave the Sony on the Ronin and use the 1DX for normal. I need full frame 4k and the Canon doesn't have it.
You are CORRECT 100%!!! Just pinned a comment to state I made a mistake. I KNEW it was fully sealed but for some reason when doing this I was remembering back to the A7 series which was NOT. So you are correct. and thank you!
Compare the size, weight & price of SL vs Sony a - camerasize.com/compact/#639.497,777.395,713.430,ha,t Sony - much smaller & lighter, more features, greater lens selection, identical IQ at 1/3 the price
You claim "THE SONY A9 IS WEATHER SEALED, FULLY!" Could you prove it? I do not think so. Take a cheap Canon/Nikon Fully seals camera like 6D and put your A9 under the rain for 20min or so. I think you know what would happen and you would not do that to your own A9..
The issue with the SL is the size of Leica's TL lenses. They are untransportable, weigh a tonne and cost 5000$ each... When you choose a Sony A9, you can put a 55 f:1,8 on, which is very good, very cheap and very light ! And many other lenses like Zeiss, Canon, Nikon and now Sigma etc... much more cheaper than Leica's lenses and as good.
Of course they would if they value IQ, build and design over all out speed and response. I know of at LEAST 10 who chose the SL over the A9, and they are very right in the mind. I own both, love both. Sold the SL when I got the A9, missed it and bought another at a great price used.
The Lecia sl is 4 years old now, it will be interesting to see what the new model can do when it eventually is released. The speed the technology is moving at today might not be compatible with Leica company ethos.
Which of those Leica lenses can't be used on a Sony via adapter? I have a M39 screw mount adapter for my Sony A7RIII. It works great and I get over 5 stops of image stabilization with this camera.
Hello I'm new to the Leica world and I have a question. If I use the Leica M lenses (Noctilux-M 75 f/1.25 ASPH and Summilux) on the Leica SL (Typ 601) with a Leica M-Adapter L adapter, the focus will be automatic (auto-focus) or manual. Thank you very much in advance.
Good choice. Sony is a consumer electronics company with no history in photography. Leica on the other hand, is a legend. No serious art photographers shoot withe "Sonys."
The A9 looks like it was built out of a bin of spare parts. The SL looks like Leica put more emphasis on industrial and UI design. Asian cameras will always be cheaper than their German counterparts, but why can't the manufactures employ the same design standards?
Carl Stawicki probably all based on cost. Make it cheaper and perform well. Sells more units. I like the look of the A7/9. Of course it's not as sleek as the leica. But Germans are picky and engineer things with precision. You'll pay more for it.
Out of a bin of spare parts? You're comment is wholly ridiculous... there are others who think that the SL is a clunky, conservative, unprogressive hunk of metal.
As a all time MF shooter, there's no doubt I'll go for the SL. I've borrowed the A7R2 from my friend and used it for a few weeks, the menu system of Sony is indeed a deal breaker for me.
The menu system on the A7RIII is much better. They also improved the EVF to 3.6 million dots. For manual focusing I do like the fact that the A7RIII has 5 stops of image stabilization built-in.
This is a fan boy opinion cameras are choosed for Thier performance and versatility not for romantic feelings and passion you should learn how to do reviews bro all the review about the leica you didn't even talk about any feature of the a9
Cameras were originally a product of science and technology, so what's wrong with them having a bunch of that? And, please, tell us how the Sony is not an actual camera? Too cheap for your wallet? Okay then
I agree with this. The Sony is “better” in every way but I’d rather have the Leica. The Leica inspires me to shoot, the Sony is a tech toy that anyone can just point and shoot and get great results.
Put on $10000 lens on Sony and you will know who's better Leica boy 👦 it's not fair to be honest, you oldies you $10000 set with leica and with Sony just 6k set up... And still check iq... That makes no sense. Hey Leica boy it's time to meet a7riii
That leica is not a Leica it’s has full Panasonic internals the only thing leica is the metal body and that’s about it. So for me Sony wins the cake. The Leica glass is the only thing that keeps the SL on top since they go hand in hand
I would not say the SL is junk. Bought the SL a year ago and it was a good camera but way behind in lens selection which prompted me to get an a7rII instead. Better native lens selection and have adapters so I can use my old Leica M glass. I also noticed that I can push the raw files of my Sony harder then the RAW files of the SL in Lightroom. I still like the ergo of the SL a bit better but in value the Sony takes it by spades.
Red TV Productions I can afford any Leica without issues. I still think Leica cameras are overpriced junk. For around the same price as Leica M or SL you can get cameras like this A9, or Fuji GFX, or maybe just the comparatively cheap Sony A7RII WITH a bunch of great lenses. What does Leica have? Nice build quality? Nice design? OK, I'll give them that. What else? The sensors are mediocre, AF is either non existent or what I would call acceptably quick, but NOWHERE NEAR the A9 or a professional sports DSLR for that matter, lenses are great but not better than the best Sony or Zeiss or Sigma lenses. Leica is a luxury status symbol. Period.
I agree. I like status symbols. I like the best in everything. I have the a7r2 and it feels like a toy in comparison to the SL. The only reason I had to buy the sony is because it is the only cam that shoots full frame 4k. I need it for real estate work.
Red TV Productions If you like status symbols, good for you. I like high end cameras with a great price/performance ratio, like the A9 or the GFX. I couldn't care less about some status symbols. To each his own though. I wish you a pleasant time with your Leica SL. Cheers!
