But he looks at Meadow, like, you told me he was gay. I don’t remember if she did tell him that because he didn’t want her to have male roommates, who are straight. 🤷🏻♀️
@@JMarieCAlove He looks at meadow because one she’s living with a male. Two he knows he’s stepped in it andMeadow is going to be pissed about the remark. All that goes away though as Carmella takes the prize for champion homophobe lol.
AJ's demeanor in this scene is really telling. He shows no enthusiasm over college when earlier in the show he gleefully said he wanted to go to harvard or west point but tony shot it down. Then here he is proud to have earned a C on his paper when he was never a good student, and Carmela immediately insults the grade, and AJ's look of pride drops. C is an average grade and AJ is a below average student. Belittling his achievements, no matter how small, completely shatters his self confidence.
What are you talking about he is a dumbass and has no interest in anything don’t blame the parents for being annoyed and ashamed of a looser soon like that
He was brought up pampered up with this cushioned life and spoiled. He was programmed not to do an earnest living. In the first 2 seasons AJ doesn't seem that bad, but once season 3 begins the problems start to take effect.
@Jaegar19Ultima What a dumbass and ill-informed comment. Plenty of poor students work hard and earn academic scholarships proving that poor doesn't make you less smart. The only link between being poor and intelligence would be access to proper nutrition during growing years and good schools (which encourage critical thinking and other necessary skills). But as I said that can and has been negated by scholarship programs and other ways to access healthy food. Nature only gives a predisposition but nurture and environment can provide the rest.
I love how Tony the macho old school mob boss managed to go along better with the conversation about homosexual books than Carmela. Her arguing was making it more awkward😂😂😂
Bc carmella was a self perceived more devout catholic, Tony practiced it for traditional purposes but didn’t really buy any of it. He’s indifferent which eventually is why he’s the only one who doesn’t mind Vito being gay or see the big deal other than old school mob rules.
@@aepr84 the truth lies in the middle. Vito was his best earner, and that was mostly why Tony didn't want to have him whacked, but Tony wasn't a raging homophobe either, at least compared to the likes of Paulie or Carlo...
Well he was an expert in why the one guy that hung himself. Maybe he had been a closet homosexual but in this case he would have to side with the college students.
@@nectarinedreams7208 not really, from the sounds of AJ actually tried to read the book so when the girl says the thing about the nude statue he reacts with genuine surprise because he must have missed it.
Social skills are a real thing, and Tony had great social skills, he literally can fit in anywhere and go along with the conversation, carmella however, with very little redeeming qualities was out of her league at this table
The way you worded it makes it sound like you're trying to say that just because Tony could fit in at the table, he somehow has more redeeming qualities than carm? Cmon now. Carmella, for all her faults, is still a much better person than Tony, as low of a bar as that may be. Making wise cracks at the dinner table doesn't make Tony any less of a monster.
Someone pointed out that Carmela was “helping” AJ out with that paper, which adds even more context to why she was so upset about not understanding Billy Budd. Not only did she get denied by Furio, she also got hoed by proxy thru AJ’s teacher an now Meadow and her elite friends. All Carm cares about is status and appearances, without that and the little hope that Furio gave her for something deeper all she can do is lash out and be petty.
I always interpreted that as them putting AJ down in a way. He was super proud of his C and Carmella instantly pokes a hole in that balloon, even though it was better than he normally did in school. I know a lot of people hate AJ but I always figured a lot of scenes make it clear that he's a knucklehead because Carmella and Tony aren't very supportive of him.
@@umbradumont5077 The one time he was planning on doing something pretty noble (joining the military because he was passionate about the issues in the Middle East) he was immediately talked out of it and given a mafia adjacent job.
Well obviously Carmela was helping him or probably did the whole paper for him and got shocked to find out she got a C. It’s all her her her. Carmelas definition of working hard is to watch the movie.
@@umbradumont5077 You don't interpret very well. Carmella was under the impression he worked really hard on it and was surprised he only got a C. She wasn't mad at him or trying to diss him.
I love how Tony, with people very much unlike himself, knows how to charm. Yeah, I get it... he's a charming sociopath, but it's still fascinating nonetheless
“I’ll go to Rutgers, I guess…” This line had me howling. Those exact words came out of every classmate of mine back in my NJ high school who had no idea what they wanted to do after high school. So good.
@@mattmaccaronio5990 you’re a complete fucking idiot. Jersey is one of the most most diverse states on the nation. Should we just have higher Ed for white people? Go fuck your racist ass. Even worse you’re literally just saying that to be a dumbass tool. Why is affirmative action bad? How did it ruin Rutgers? Did you even go to Rutgers?
@WatchEuropaTheLastBattle Listen, man, I get that you're homophobic, but just because you think she's right doesn't mean she's right. And this is coming from a Christian guy. God doesn't hate gays. He's the one that made them. Gay people are a creation of God himself. Why would you hate a creation of God? This is assuming the reason you're homophobic is because you're religious. If you just hate gay people, well, I can't really help you with that.
Yes, but I've noticed how happy Meadow appears to be. She displayed moments of hostile and belligerent attitudes with Tony and Carmella in the past, but it's refreshing to see her in a sociable mood with everyone. Maybe it's because she's in love with Finn that brings out the positivity in her.
@@borntoplay4748 Trouble is, Meadow is also just as self-righteous with her "shut up, I go to school so I know more of the world than you" too. Both are unbearable.
Spoken like someone with a mother who would rather fall ass-first from the lethal height of Everest onto a bed of adult cacti below than admit she’s wrong, and has nowhere near the life experience it would take to justify her dismissive arrogance.
This was more about how miserable Carmela was because the man she was lusting after cut off all communication with her. She was taking her unhappiness out on everyone.
@@gordongekko9742oh never thought of that 😮 she’s up in arms cause she missed the point of the book and didn’t get AJ the grade she thought she would. Watching it 1st time I thought she had read the book in her younger years and had a crush on the character, totally denies the homosexual tones of the book.
Another comic relief genius of Sopranos, Tony accused all the wrong people being gay. He thought this kid was gay, the guy who came to check the house for the bear. But he couldn't point out the gays in his own crew!! Lol!! Genius writing!! In everyday life you works with people with that. I remember working with a couple of guys who thought almost everyone else was gay!!
@Dan Chapowski I mean, yeah they made mistakes, but to be a mafia boss you gotta have some level of intellect. Probably more so than the average human.
Love how proud A.J. is when he tells Meadow he got a C on his Billy Budd paper but you see that smile evaporate when Carmela starts berating him as to why he only got a C
Contrary to popular belief, it was Carm who never had the makings of a varsity athlete... You can see how trapped Carmella was and she knew it too. She was jealous of everyone including her own daughter. Every time she tries to make a little something for herself she’s reminded that Tony controls everything. She felt genuine love for Furio, as opposed to the deeply ingrained resentment for Tony- I feel so bad for her. But like Artie’s wife (I can’t remember her name) said “We both made our choices. I made my choice, I’m happy with my life” EVERYTHING about this show is amazing! The writing, the character development! I just cannot cope 😍
The little 4 second scenes on this show with the acting to go with it makes this show something that will never happen again , for when tony says no offense to when meadow is staring at him .. genius writing and amazing acting and great directing
It’s clear from this scene that Carmella’s memory of the book stem from her adolescent or innocent years, so she has a fond regard for the book. Ironic that she should use the term ‘picked on by an evil boss,’ at a time when she was emotionally drawn to Furio.
Carmela always had an inferiority complex, because deep down she knows that even though her and Tony have a nice house, expensive cars, designer clothes, jewelry, neither of them has education or culture, and it always made her feel bad when she was with people who knew more than her.
Tony was the old school New Jersey dad and reminds me so much of my own NJ dad. Not the criminal part, but his demeanor. He was always the smartest guy in the room but never let on. He just let the conversation roll and had the perfect line afterwards. I miss him a lot.
Meadow asks a bottle of wine and Tony brought a box of probably stolen Evian which was preferred by Valentina when they meet. Damn, Tony is really something.
@@KingKuba1313think the fella meant that his comprehension of media is ahead of Carmella. Like how you miss the fact that this scene isn’t trying to say carm is right, and that her ranting is in fact very uncomfortable
Oh man, the performance of Meadow's friend who denied he is gay is amazing: that serious look he gave Tony, and hand gesture to emphasize his point. Tony's reply to his denial is even better, LOL. So fun to watch this part!
Edie Falco’s acting is so perfect. This is 1000% what my parents sound like when they won’t let something go in a movie related argument. They take it to an overly serious hostile place. 😄
Meadow actually is wrong though. Which I think really sums up the dynamic here really well. She gets all emotional and defensive but Meadow is actually spouting bullshit as if its fact because one professor she heard speak said so.
@@themistoklestheodosopoulos6253 Lol, a real intellectual here. You're also getting emotional and defensive, because you don't know what you're talking about, same as Carmela.
God this is fucking funny. The way Tony says “no offense” and then “you’re not? to the guy who isn’t gay, and the way Meadow looks at him. And then when the girl talks about the passage in Billy Budd and AJ says “really?”, Tony just shifts straight to his usual anger at AJ: “Thought you read it!” Then as Carmela makes a scene and everyone is embarrassed , Tony looking like he couldn’t give less of a shit. Great writing and acting.
tony never stops makin jokes except when he's pissed off. either he's joking around, talking intensely, or throwing a total fit. if he ain't laughing, look out.
Surfmus She's the girl from high school that dated idiots then got mad at the world when she realized the error in her ways way too late. She's way too dumb for college and never deserved a true family life with happiness. She's a user
Carmela: a finook in a book, which kids are supposed to read? Back in your father's day we wouldn't be having this conversation - parents knew how to handle this. Tone: Enough rush to judgement here - the book's reputation is at stake. Plush it's 2006 - there's pillow-biters in special forces.
Love the scene later on where AJ's reading "Death in Venice," another homoerotic book. Nice little touch. Probably before the writers decided on the Mr. Wexler/Carmela affair plot line. Pretty advanced for high school!
Edie Falco is not only hot, but an incredibly brilliant actress. The scene with her, Rosie Aprille and Meadow when they are talking about Vito being gay. The way she pauses, and then rolls her eyes as she says the words “possibly gay,” is a priceless expression of someone who personally has a ‘holier than thou’ attitude towards everyone else, yet enjoys to ‘burn the source’ with everybody else!
2 comments: -Carmela’s dialogue provides such a good look into the 21st century conservative psyche (eg fear of cultural decline via sexuality, gender, etc) -the actor who plays Alex is terrific in boardwalk empire
“No offense” lol the way meadow looked at Tony 😂😭😭 In regards to Carmela “she doesn’t know what she’s talking about” She’s so snobby she thinks she knows everything. 😭😭😭😭😭
"We had lain thus in bed, chatting and napping at short intervals, and Queequeg now and then affectionately throwing his brown tattooed legs over mine, and then drawing them back; so entirely sociable and free and easy were we; when, at last, by reason of our confabulations, what little nappishness remained in us altogether departed, and we felt like getting up again, though day-break was yet some way down the future." -Moby Dick.
