One of my favorite scenes in the show. Any of the other mob characters would’ve at least told the woman and children to stfu, but Paulie made sure to lovingly let everyone know it was just a bad dream he had. Stand up guy, for a made man.

He’s a hypochondriac, concerned over his physique, never got married or had kids. Doesn’t put himself out there to earn as much as the other guys (presumably to avoid risking a big time sentence) and hoards his money as a result. And he refused to accept Tony’s request to run Vito’s old crew because everybody else in the position had died. He would never be able to handle the pressure and commitment required of the top position

Actually a few members of Tony's crew did survive: Walden Belfiore, Dante Greco, Benny Fazio, Peter Germani, and a whole bunch of other capos and soldiers. Additionally, Paulie has Patsy Parisi, probably the smartest guy from the old crew and potentially Silvio Dante ( assuming he comes out of the coma). Plus in a hypothetical situation Paulie minus Tony constantly humiliating & debasing him publicly all the time would have felt more powerful and happier to run his own train. In the end everything is about money, prestige and power. Paulie was lucky to survive the train-wreck that was the Soprano crew. It would have been more interesting to know who between the two would have survived ultimately: Paulie vs Patsy.
