The evolution of Bobby's character was one of my favorite details from The Sopranos. From a shy, bumbling guy Tony ridiculed and dismissed into Tony's most trusted soldier.
@TheGooners11 Simply not true. Bobby's rise through the ranks was swift once he was given an opportunity to prove himself. Tony even says "you've been a top performer lately" while they're fishing and tenatively promotes him to underboss. That would not have happened if he was incompetent.
I wonder if Tony ever realized that the 'strong silent type' he constantly whined about was staring him in the face for years. Everything Tony lamented about missing from modern society was embodied in Bobby.
I think Tony realizes he may have misjudged Bobby after a while. You never saw any stupid shit, stupid drug usage, or poppin off at the mouth with Bobby or Sil
True. Remember when Tony mocked Bobby for what he was wearing when they had to go into the woods and save Paulie and Chris after they lost the Russian and spent a night almost freezing to death? Yeah, he looked a little like Elmer Fudd, but Bobby could have survived a week out there and Tony realized it was a smart way to dress.

I'm sure Janice filled in Bobby on plenty of juicy timbits about Tony's marriage, but it's one of those things - Tony's marriage is much older, and he is Bobby's boss, so he is(or feels like he is) entitled to give him a pep talk on the subject. It's just how humans are, it's not even condescending or anything, he knows Tony means well, and it's just making conversation.
@@hansolo631 Bobby had a way better marriage that only ended because of his wife's tragically sudden death. Tony is only still with Carmella because they're both husks that refuse to change in any way. He really can't give advice.

Bobbys cadence and how he spoke was what really set him apart from the others. He knew how to speak with sense, picked his words and his delivery was how he earned his way up the chain here. Even Sil had a tendency to speak with a bit more Vigour and forget about Paulie and Christopher. Good Guy Bobby
I love how Tony asks Bobby if he wants money and Bobby says that he “wants the chance to earn”, a real man who is loyal and trustworthy to the end. The kind of man you want in a fight; regardless of if he’s scared he’ll stand by you and fight if he needs to; the strong and silent type.
Gotta respect the way Bobby handles this situation. Nearly every other guy in Jersey would bitch about not earning enough behind Tony's back instead of sitting down with him.
“She sleeps a lot ... it’s hard” ... PAUSE - BLINK ... I believe Tony was sincere when he said he was the only one he could trust with Junior. The way Tony winced when Bobby said he waited in line for stool softener. He understood. Hardly the ideal “job” for a made guy.
He approached Tony the right way. Got right to the point, wasn't asking for any handouts or special treatment, just an opportunity to be more productive and have more responsibility. Those are the kind of guys you want on your team regardless of the organization.
One thing I love about these guys is how formal they are when talking about business. On a normal day it’s Tony’s office and they can all hangout playing pool and shoot the shit in here; but whenever Tony’s expecting someone for a meeting or whatever the back room of the Bing becomes a board meeting room all of a sudden. Same thing with Carmine’s place.
And unlike Christopher, he wasn't getting forced up the chain. Bobby put in the work without bitching, and earned respect. Even Paulie found himself on no-mans-land when getting heated with Bobby.
Greatest series ever. So much going on in this scene with everything Tony is dealing with in life, from his devotion to respect and love for his uncle, his contempt to his sister, his gradual building respect for Bobby as a devoted made guy. He knows it's Janice who he is really talking to about a promotion. Stressful.
I think his feelings about Janice are complicated too. "Tends towards depression", thats Tony as well. This scene is Tony at his most human, trying to do what's best for his family, and being honest & upfront with Bobby
The fact Bobby can deal with Janice and stay emotionally stable shows he is ready for bigger and better things. Collections at this point would be childs play.

It is basically like hazing. He didn't get treated that well, but stayed loyal and even could deal with Janice. Tony eventually realized Bobby could prove himself to be dependable and loyal.
Bobby does two things very well 1) He gets right to the point, which Tony respects 2) He refuses Tony's offer of refreshments negating a common negotiating tactic of offering a small "gift" to make the other party feel like they owe you
Outside of Christopher, Tony definitely appreciated Bobby the most and did a lot for him. It’s easy to see why though, Bobby was easily one of the most agreeable people to work with in the entire crew. On top of that after the whole fight he even got a promotion. Tony definitely respected Bobby just not Janice.

@@jmar291 Tony became increasingly sociopathic and unhappy over the 8 years period of the show. Season by season. Worse and worse. Increasingly isolated at the top with his money.. He killed his own captains...sometimes personally...Ralphie, Christopher, Pussy (no choice on that one). Not to mention falling out with or not inspiring loyalty from Ritchie, Furio, Paulie, Carlo, Feech, etc.. Especially Carlo who he personally insulted several times.
Tony offered him a raise and he countered with wanting the chance to “earn” it. As an employer, if employee ever says that, you keep them close and give them the raise anyways. Cause that’s a stand up guy.
Tony really grows to appreciate the way Bobby measures his words and deals with, what he knows, are the thankless and nightmarishly droll tasks in life so there's still decency. Tone's a lot more sensitive and impressionable than he is allowed to let on so he can recognize, subtly, others superior methods of dealing with what causes him such pain that leads to rage.
Bobby was the most decent stand-up person male or female on the entire series. Never bitched, just grinds and does what needed to be done. Thought with his head and heart not his ego. Treated others with respect even when they did not do likewise. He was a good solid guy and probably would’ve been better off in civilian life.
The way Tony rubs his wedding ring as he explains what to expect from marriage is so akin to real life... little details like these are what flesh these characters and this show out so well. Rest in Peace James Gandolfini, you're impeccable talent will be dearly missed
I love the consistent leadership style Tony shows. After every sit-down he makes sure to embrace his people as a secondary reinforcement. Obviously this can’t be down in the business world but I believe it boosts the subordinate’s commitment and loyalty.
Notice how Bobby got straight to the point with what he wanted, throughout the series Tony hates it whenever someone goes into story about why they’re there. Not Bobby he knows Tony and he knows how to ask for something.
Tony offers him a handout and he turns it down and says he wants to earn. That alone made Bobby a top guy. Someone like Paulie would have just taken the money and offered nothing in return.
Bobby was always 💯 tony should have kept Bobby around him more then some of the other ones like Carlo or Raymond. Bobby very loyal to Tony to the very end
Probably one of the only such meetings Tony ever held in the entire series that was straight-up, honest, and positive. All the rest were either screaming sessions, flase fronts before someone got whacked, or some other such scullduggery.
Damn, that's how managers should be...understanding your employees predicaments, telling them that you need them (not matter how shitty that position is) and in the end giving them options...

Janice and her scheming ways got Bobby killed. Karen was content with their station in life. If Bobby had stayed low profile in the family he would have survived the war, just like how he was a survivor of the season one war that took out junior’s crew. But Janice wanted him to make more money and kept pushing him.
Believe it or not this scene exhibit a textbook example of how to engage an effective wage negotiation with an employer. Bobby stated his position outline the reasons for having that position and did so while retaining a great balance between being friendly but not familiar which is the Hallmark of how to cultivate effective professional relationships.
I love the Sopranos scene when Bobby beats the living crap out of Tony Soprano upstate. What a beating he gave Tony. He had it coming. Bobby asked for help and was a good guy. Tony gave him a bunch of B.S. That is how my crew rolls.
Bobby had an interesting rise in the family from being Junior's errand boy to being a top earner and leader under Tony. He was dependable and never swayed from the family.
