To everyone arguing in the comments, Tony makes his point in the video. He’s not saying Italians aren’t racially different from other European/white people, he’s saying the Italians haven’t totally assimilated into the blended white culture that the other Europeans have. It’s the culture and religion he’s talking about, not the race itself
Ok, but the whole point of the scene is that he’s not right lmao. There’s a shit ton of Italians who genuinely don’t think they’re white because they face discrimination, despite the fact that that the discrimination that Italians face is incredibly small when compared to actual PoC
As an Italian-American I completely get what he's saying because I feel kind of similar like Italians are culturally the real Latin people even if there in America they started the Original Latin culture or way of life due to their ancestors which predominated mainly southern Europe even if ancient Romans were in different parts so their culture is a little bit more ethnic and therefore it doesn't go with Wonder Bread White America and it never did Italians really started showing up in bulk in this country after the times of slavery where they were then forced to take the jobs of the slaves pretty much without actually being one. They are not WASPs and because they were catholic they were definitely in one point treated as the other anyone that knows history of Italians in America will tell you that they aren't your average everyday Anglo white person. So for that woman to sit there "you don't consider yourself white" is ignorant because author history in this country
Italians are the real Latin people. Latin comes from Italy. Hispanics are not Latino. Only Italians and people of Italian descent are Latino. Hispanics need to stop calling themselves Latino. It's cultural appropriation.
It’s sad for me to see descendant Italians or other Europeans who can’t pronounce their last name properly. They’ve assimilated too much and no going back at this point.
It's like franco-Norman descended people in England who began to mispronounce their French names after a while, so Dispenseur (dis-poun-sir) turned into Spencer, Filsroy/Fitzroy (Fis-rwa) turned into Fitz-royi and Beauchamp (Bo-shuhun) turned into Bee-chump. It happens unfortunately/fortunately, as with the corruption of words, and this creates new languages etc etc
For All the Americans in the comment section. the idea of 'whiteness' and 'white privilige' are American ideas based on the WASPs ( White Anglo saxon Protestant) and other protestants. While other groups like Italiens, Irish, Polish were cheap labour were considered to be less due to their backround often lived in slums in the cities and lacked educational prospects it wasn't till the 1950's that these white moved into Suburbs in great numbers. the Irish are celtic to The Brits Anglo saxon ideals, Poles were less than Germanic people and due to it's closeness to Africa southern Italiens are considered less than Northern Italiens. These groups are 'white' but ike the class system there was for hundreds of years a caste system between groups.
Sicily was conquered by the Normans - who were a mix of northern French and Scandinavians - you never hear that Sicilians should be looking like Norwegians haha You yanks are embarrassing as fuck. All Italians look the same more or less, they look tanned Mediterraneans like Spaniards and Portuguese etc That’s what half of white Europeans look like
Tripleblade 82 Meadow did date two merigans Tony was happy with - Finn the dentist and Patrick Parisi the lawyer, two men going into professional upper middle class careers.
@@nobad6134 Patrick Parisi is Patsy Parisi's(part of soprano crew) son. And Finn is half Italian although Finn said he was totally deracinated(lost his Italian identity) so I guess that makes him a Merigan. Also Meadow dated Jackie Jr who was the son of a Jackie Aprile the former mob boss before Tony.
@Tripleblade 82 It didn't matter to him what Noah identified as, if he said he was jewish before black Tony would have let him know that in his eyes he was still a mulignan.
I have been to Italy several times both in the north and in the north and in the south, i guarantee you that there are (most in the north but also in the south even if in a minor way) many italians that you could not distinguish from Anglos or northern europeans. I think italian-americans are more dark of skin because the majority of them came from south Italy
For example look at this: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--_QIZWEemG4.html it's a convention of italian redheads, and they seems all irish
I actually prefer to be Mediterranean , I'm from Spain and without sun exposure my skin is as pale as the Brits , the difference is that when I get sun I get tan and they get red burnt lol
