I like this comment! I agree in theory but in reality I believe it would never have worked, as this thing, and all these people, is heavily dependent on reputation and how people believe. Power lies where people think it lies. If Tony had straight up told Junior how it was going to be a farce then no one would have ever bought it. And even as it stood currently, no one really did buy it. It worked to insulate Tony but at what cost? He basically sacrificed his entire crew one by one to maintain his ego. I know reputation is everything and protecting your ego in any type of Power situation is incredibly important, people who say reputation and image are not important are either not versed in holding power at all or are in the luxurious position where they are either naively ignorant of how they are being perceived (and going to get the consequences) or are lying to you publically while being fully aware and handling their reputation privately. But Tony's insecurity really whittled down the organization. When he came up with the idea to have Junior as the lighting rod I believe he made a huge mistake that was based in insecurity. If he had been more straight forward and more secure in his self image and less insecure he would not constantly be sabatoging his own crew at every opportunity. He basically either killed everyone who worked for him or pushed them to such a stressful breaking point that they fell into trouble and become a liability for Tony and his Mafia Crew either by becoming junkies or depressed or snitching to the cops because Tony wasn't taking care of them and mistreating them. The Lightning Rod thing was just another example of that. If he led his crew with dignity and respect in all areas and had the strength to maintain that he would be more like Phil Leotardo, and be more capable. But right now he planted a tree from a seed of insecurity, built a house of insecurity and the flower that blooms from that tree is entirely built on insecurity too. It's just a repeating cycle. Tony should have been more straight forward with things and openly wore the title of Boss, and he wouldve got alot further. Instead of trying to play people like puppets by finding their pain points like he did with Junior. It definitely works in the short term but long term you get much less. Manipulation is a necessary skill but it seemed like it was Tony's ONLY skill. In an effort to save the flock, every single sheep was taken, one by one, to sacrificial alter. And then nothing remained! But we don't know if it would have been any better had he not been manipulative maybe he would have crashed the ship much earlier. He is a master manipulator though, and even there that's a huge lesson. You can be incredibly incompetent at your job and make many many mistakes and be the worst possible choice of leader (Junior was no better he was also completely dominated by his Insecurities like the show states, Tony as well) But if you're good at Manipulating, entirely good companies and organizations can be infiltrated by good manipulators and fully ruined from the inside, top to bottom, just because the people who invaded and seized power were good at creating internal competition and disharmony they can gain advantage from by making everyone under them fight each other, while they reap the rewards and stay isolated during the conflict that weakens everyone. Like it's a huge warning tale I guess, you could have something great, but it doesn't mean your next leader will be great and match your efforts, instead a very skilled manipulator could invade and sneak into the top super quick and look impressive while doing so but the whole time he's playing off everyone's insecurities and destroying the foundation of everything so when it crashes, it takes out alot more than anyone expected to get damaged. For that Puppet thing, the Puppet Master has to play a very delicate role of always puppet believe there's no strings attached, and they are always the one in control. If Junior knew it was just to isolate and protect Tony, it wouldn't give Junior what he wanted which was the Leadership and the Power and Respect and Authority. Junior wanted that first, the money of being the boss could come second. Had Junior been less insecure too he could've seized power much earlier in life than stay weak all his life and let his insecurities make him accept being a Puppet Boss in his old age. You should watch on RU-vid the podcast Mike Duncan's History of Rome. Especially the last 25% after Constantine if you don't want to listen to it all. Alot of very good stories on how Puppet Masters try to, and fail to, control their Puppets.
