The GOLD STANDARD for opening scenes. If this movie had only the opening scene IT STILL wouldve won the Oscar. Julie Andrews is magnificent. This is a forever moment.
The Godfather's beginning with Marlon Brando is the best in my opinion, and Inglorious Bastards' is a close second. Maybe I can assign third to this one.
@@gracepuckett6506 I'm Canadian haha, so not sure what you mean, I'm also a Newfie, so that is a double whammy right there LOL:) I studied Clarinet at U of T, so have a very good sense for singers and pianist, as my teacher forbid me to listen to clarinettist which he though would take away from my real gift, aka high level sound on the clarinet:) My last visit to the U.S. was to Nashville, I really liked the people there!! I really like the accent there!
Since I first saw this film back in the 1960's , this opening scene has stuck with me , I am in awe of the magnificence of this movie and the brilliant music of Rogers & Hammerstein
I was lucky enough to visit Salzburg in college and we saw a bunch of the sights from the movie… it’s even more beautiful in person. Austria is simply breathtaking!!
I was eight years old when I saw this movie for the first time and I did NOT want to go to the movies with my family to see a movie called 'The Sound of Music' - I wanted to stay home and watch 'Flipper'! I was still whining when the movie began but when Julie Andrews came walking across that meadow swinging her arms and twirling around I STOOD UP OUT OF MY SEAT! That scene made such an impression on me and it sill does even today. It is beyond a doubt the MOST SPECTACULAR SCENE EVER FILMED IN MOTION PCTURE HISTORY!
My grandmother too me to see this movie on my eighth birthday, which after all, was back in 1965, when this movie was first released . The Sound of Music is just an absolute classic! It's a shame that they don't make movies like this anymore.
. This film is definitely "comfort food" for the fan of fine motion pictures. This is my favorite opening scene of all the films I've seen in my entire life. When you combine the great cinematography, terrific music, and the fabulous voice of Julie Andrews, this makes me tear up with appreciation every time. I first saw this film when I was just 11 years old. I loved the movie then, and I still love it today. This movie is one of those rare gems that has captured the hearts of millions of people around the world.
My mother took me to this when I was 8. My German grandfather had just died. I think my mother cried all the way through it....especially edelweiss. I had the organist play it at her funeral.
I remember seeing the towns and wanting to live there with my dad as it was the 2 of us growing up. I had to have been about 5 when I first saw this movie...so long time
I belive its because the likes and interests of people have sadly changed. Most people my age don't appreciate these films or storylines anymore. I will say that I much preffere these films over any other ones, myself
I saw an interview once with Julie Andrews, who said she had to have a happy care free expression and disposition as a giant helicopter was flying towards her. They did this shot a number of number of times apparently, but the result is probably one of the most iconic openings in movie history.

WONDERFUL!!! Thank you so much for posting this. It's perfect. I don't think I've ever seen a film with a more breathtaking opening. Fills my heart with peace.
In May 1965 we moved to Waikiki, had an apartment 1/2 block from the only theater on Oahu playing one movie 24/7 x 2 years..."The Sound of Music." The residents and tourists kept that theater busy for two yrs. Theater was on Kuhio street just after the Kalakaua split to beach hotels. Based on a real family who escaped and I believe ended up living in Vermont. Still watch it every 1-2 yrs. For me, in the top ten movies ever made.
My mother would play this movie a lot when I was a little kid. When reading both parts of Goethe's Faust I imagined back to this scenery. After finishing, I had the urge to research for this movie and now I'm utterly entranced by Germany's majesty and beauty in these frames, also by Julie Andrews, of course.
Probably, I’ll be guessing, if Disney made this film instead of 20th Century Fox 57 years ago, possibly, as Maria sings this tune in this scene of the hills, her voice would possibly captivate the attention of talking animals (all animated by Disney resembling those from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Song of the South, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Mary Poppins) who would be following her wherever she goes in the hills as she sings this song being smitten by her voice, but as soon as she leaves to the convent, the talking animals would all be sad and depressed that Maria is leaving to the convent and wishing she had more time to sing and follow wherever she goes and talk about her whereabouts and her return and start singing a song about Maria leaving the hills to go the convent and wishing she could return to hear her sing and follow her wherever she goes.
I finally found an upload with the completed opening segment. I first sat through this classic when I was 13. But then I didn’t fully appreciate it until in my 20’s. The Sound of Music is semi holiday traditional viewing to me. And I never watch it while fast forwarding to hear Julie sing
As lovely as this opening scene is, Oscar Hammerstein's pen must have slipped when he wrote one line of the lyric: "To sing through the night/Like a lark who is learning to pray". The London Times critic Kenneth Tynan was only one of many people who had fun with this picture: "The image of a kneeling, nocturnal lark, its wing tips reverently folded, is entirely typical...." Also, larks are universally associated with dawn and the coming of the day -- as Shakespeare knew when he had Romeo and Juliet awakened by a lark's song, which tells Romeo that he must flee for his life. (It's nightingales that "sing through the night").
@@bulbasaurbrutal5137 Got it. But a masterpiece of filmmaking stands on its own merits. Subjectivity is irrelevant. Kind Of like me saying I don't like chocolate ice cream. lol
