In the beginning of the film, the Captain was so stern and cold. Here he’s like an awkward schoolboy, feeling and expressing true, raw vulnerability. Christopher Plummer brilliantly performs this character’s evolution as the story unfolds.
“Well you can’t marry someone when you’re… in love with someone else. Can you?” The way he looks at her when he says “in love with someone else” melts my heart
I've always loved this scene. I like the way the Captain gently urges Maria to sit, hoping to put her at ease, while simultaneously becoming a bundle of nerves himself as he tries to gauge the situation and confirm whether she feels the same way he does. Maria still thinks he's with the Baroness, but you can see the tiny glimmer of hope there --- a bit of tender vulnerability --- as he asks her why she came back. And the way he turns toward her before pulling her in for the kiss --- swoon!
Maria's sweet, pleading eyes, which she at first tries to hide from the Captain's own searching eyes, finally meet the Captain's eyes in a moment of revealing truth that neither one of them can deny. And as the Captain delicately draws Maria's lips to his, everything else fades into the night...
The most endearing part of the scene first me is when he kisses her for the first time and then gently and tenderly kisses her forehead. Shows how he respects her.
And he leans in very slowly and gently, making his intentions perfectly clear and giving her more than enough time to pull away if this isn’t what she wants.
I first saw this film when I was 7! 64 now, I have watched it so many times. I think I know every word! Lucky enough to have visited Salzburg. This is my favourite scene.
@@frankmaiorana66 yes such a fantastic love story. it reminds me that love finds us, not the other way around. ❤️ this story and the happy ending despite all odds
@@JulianneTure until they didn’t lol. and love comes walking in with a big gulp of fresh air. that split second when the heart and the mind finally and instantaneously align…oh the emotion of that moment! agree it really was perfect. one of my absolute favorite films. in fact if was just on tv the other night I watched a few minutes. Must go back and rewatch. someone mentioned the wedding processional and it’d been so long since I’ve seen it I had to look it up to remind myself. so many fantastic moments
I think this is my favourite scene in all of Hollywood! This is the very definition of romantic and delicate Sensuality, my heart melts every time I see that scene.
Oh Christopher Plummer... Such a handsome man. Superb actor, decent person too. Julie is just exquisite... Just wonderful person. Note the reprise of the laendler waltz ... ❤❤❤

This is the second upload of this scene I’m commenting on. Even though Julie is the reason i discovered this movie in the 2000’s, one reason I come back to it once in a while is the love story between Maria and the Captain. Even though Christopher grew bitter about the role, I’m glad he and Julie stayed friends all these years. May he rest in peace!

During the scene, Julie got the giggles so bad that it happened too often that is the Director, moved them into the silhouette in front of the door to hide the giggles
Они оба смеялись из-за скрипа угольных светильников. Звук этот их обоих очень смешил и сцена не удавалась, пока режиссёр не принял решение снять их в силуэте. Это просто идеальное его решение сделало сцену ещё более романтической!!! ❤❤❤
