A prog anthem for everyone who laments the corruption of popular music by the drudgery of K-Pop and other similarly soulless genres, Porcupine Tree's The Sound Of Muzak, off their album In Absentia, is a cleverly complex and accessible tune all at once. Steven Wilson 's flawless songwriting, Gavin Harrison 's rhythmic ingenuity, Colin Edwin 's silky smooth bass, and Richard Barbieri 's atmospheric synths come together into the perfect combination of progressive rock and pop.
In this Gothik Serpent rendition, I made a small change to the chorus kick drum pattern to follow the live version of this song, bringing out its danceability. To further emphasize percussiveness, I deployed the Chapman Stick instead of bass, as its piano-like attack pairs well with the kick drum. Most importantly, the dense layers of harmonies in this tune had to be absolutely on point, and the incorporation of Olivia gives the chorus a more expanded range.
