A few videos ago Tara mentioned Porcupine Tree who are (oddly!) not widely known in the U.S.. I stream things that are recommended on Qobuz first, then if I love it, buy a vinyl copy. I'm having a slight difficulty finding vinyl of them here. Anyhoo, I LOVE the four albums I have heard so far!! I swear Hurd Culling is about Covid. It swells three times as if with each new upsurge that happened by the time they recorded this. Genius. I think I have to get some solo of Steven Wilson. At that same time you also talked about Focus. I did not know them either (How is that possible?). Now I have four of their albums on vinyl. Focus II is my favorite but Focus III is really good as well. And Jan Akkerman's 1978 solo album is a really good listen. Very Jazzy. I can't thank you two enough for sending me on this musical direction!! Matt in L.A.

Thank you so much Matt. It's great to hear that we've opened a few doors for you. It's hard to think how you missed out on Focus alright.... Hamburger Concerto is the one that keeps rising to the top of the pile for me, anyway. We just like to share the music we love with people and find this channel to be a very positive thing. We've made lots of friends around the world and now we can add LA to the list. We often get suggestions from our friends in the comments and learn of new and different artists too. Hi, Tara and Dad, more of ‘what I’ve been listening to this week’ please! I alsowork from home and it is fantastic! I look across my desk at a wall of records, so it music all day long until apart from when work gets on the way. The Venn diagram off our tastes barely intersects but for what it’s works worths here’s what I’ve been listening to in the last couple of days………The Fall - Slates Live, The Velvet Underground - early demos, The Wedding Present - Watusi, The Velvet Underground & Nico - Andy Warhol, Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park to Memphis, Dillinger - CB 200, Material Objects - Passing Through, Ghost Women - Ghost Women, Martha & the Muffins - Metro Music. I forgot to watch this video so I'm catching up now. I'm really pleased you included Manfred Mann in your list. Like Brian Auger, his work is frequently ignored or forgotten. My primary complaint about the Earth Band is the predilection for covers...followed by more covers...which is especially frustrating since their own compositions are nearly always superior to the crud and crap they cover (Spruce Springstoned, Joan Armour Plating etc). Starbird (with its allusion to The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky) is my favourite from Roaring Silence. So, thank you for giving credit to our Manfred who, if you've ever seen him interviewed, must be one of the most miserable and depressing chaps in the rock scene. Imagine a night out with him and director Ridley Scott (a smile would be a sin upon his face). It'd be like living inside a song by Joy Division.
@SpinninProg

Thanks. I have to agree with you. All Manfred albums are wonderful but tend to be flawed by the cover versions. I looked up an interview with the great man... I think I'll just go and throw myself in the river now. 😂👍

Top tens are getting a tad tedious as there are so many of them these days. Good to see you pick The Roaring Silence, I like that album but personally prefer Watch which was their next release. The last album to feature Dave fleet on guitar who had a stint with Thin Lizzy but never appeared on an album. Snowy white ultimately replaced him and appeared on the Chinatown album. The Raven by Steven Wilson is incredible, his whole discography is amazing come to think of it. What a catalogue he has, Grace for Drowning, Hand cannot erase and To the Bone are a bit special as well.

Now here's a thing..I am fully aware that I've had my pants pulled right down, i get it...I mean 45 quid for a new LP is seriously Emperors New Clothes territory isnt it?! But, the very first band I saw was Black Sabbath in Jan 1971, it cost 16 shillings..or 65p...Then they were my band..so Rhino in the US are making New Analogue recordings off the original tapes, so they have done Black Sabbath self titled, so I had to have it...but 45 QUID!!! It has landed today, now I'm a shade deaf (as a result of that very Black Sabbath gig I might add) But BLOODY HELL how good is this then? They famously recorded it via the pub on the other side of the road over 2 days in 8 hours...Well, they've put a bit more time and a little less Bitter Beer into this baby and it really shows...I have to be honest sometimes I can't really tell a huge difference in remasters/remixes but this one is genuinely chalk and cheese. Mind you...FORTYFIVE QUID!!!

Hi Spinnin' Proggers👋🏻 Pink Floyd's The Wall has been stuck in my head this week. Sea Of Tranquility recently devoted an episode to it and it's had me rewatching the film and listening to the album. It was the first Floyd album I bought and it's one of my favourite albums. Have you guys considered doing a 'favourite concept albums' video or even a 'favourite double albums' video? I still can't stop listening to the new version of Machine Head by Deep Purple. Although I love the songs on the original release I've always preferred the live versions but the new remix sounds so much better. Easily the best remix I've ever heard. Also enjoying the new Le Orme album Il Leone E La Bandiera which Scot from the Prog Corner reviewed this week. Heading down to Birmingham tomorrow to catch Riverside live. Hope you enjoy the Dublin gig later in the week and perhaps you'll post a review🤞🏻

@SpinninProg 2 месяца назад
As usual Terry, some great input. The Wall was of huge cultural significance for me growing up. It's funny how history gets rewritten and it's been pushed down a lot. Animals was the obscure one as I remember it. We will definitely have to do both of your suggestions. They're both areas we need to cover. In the meantime we are developing a thesis about "how in the name of God did such fantastic music come out between 1966 and 1975?" We've already touched on this in other videos because things popped out at us. But it's time to start to draw it together. So we have a video coming up on the initial convergence of thought that starts a movement. Let us know how you get on at Riverside.... No spoilers though. 😂😁👍

@@SpinninProg Oh no!! I said I wouldn't waffle but you've started me off again Dermot. For my money, the fantastic music made between 66 and 75 was due to bands pushing the boundaries of pop, folk, the blues, rock'n'roll etc leading music in general to be more inventive and progressive along with rapid evolutions in technology which saw new electronic instruments being developed. Record companies allowed bands more artistic freedom to experiment and they weren't pigeonholed by lazy journalists. Everyone was incorporating all sorts of influences into their music and folks bought records in their millions, however by the mid 70s corporate greed made the music business focus on the business rather than the music. Record company executives began to pressure bands to chase the dollar and commercialise their sound rather than experiment. 66 to 75 was great, then things went steadily downhill for 10 years, then massively dawnhill. I'm looking forward to hearing your take on that era👍🏻
@SpinninProg
@SpinninProg 2 месяца назад
@@terrywalker8446 Sorry for setting you off Terry. I agree 100% with everything you say. That's the phenomenon we witness. But we see a structure created that allows innovation to gestate and bloom throughout the industry. It drives quality, experimentation, new musical development, format exploitation, experience management and new forms of marketing. This makes for happier fulfilled audiences and artists and, if you look at it from a purely economic view, the business itself us thriving in an era of unprecedented growth. Where did this start? It's usually easy to pinpoint one or two disruptors. Not here.... There's a huge shift.... How? What were the drivers? I've actually contacted a university near me to see if I can study this for a PhD and maybe make a book out of it. It's equally amazing that they threw it all away in the late seventies, as you said and continued to exacerbate the situation until they practically killed their own industry. The evidence was there as to what worked... What in the name of God went wrong with them?
