Tears for Fears are musical geniuses and perfectionists. They had 3 of the best albums of the 80’s. I can’t complain about the production, sound, or consistency of any of their albums.

I must say: Amused to Death sounds marvelous cristal notes. There is many levels of sound information and you can ear each one by clarity. Waters always gave us a sense of perfection on his solo albuns production. Musical engennering for him is a target to blow our brain.
The dynamic range in all those albums is fantastic I agree. I am always looking for the most dynamic recordings possible. It always makes me smile when I never see the meters touch 0db through a whole song :). Thanks for the vid. Cheers!

I was listening to a stack of records a few weeks back. I left my volume the same for all the records. Let’s say the volume was at 6. The last record I played was Songs From the Big Chair (org. 1985 press) boom ! The fidelity and sonic sound was head and shoulders above everything I had listened to.
Thank you for a video. Inspired by it I bought a seemingly authentic version of 1985 “Songs from the big chair” album. What I immediately noticed upon delivery was a thickness of the CD. It was in best case on par with my 2014 Frank Gambale CD. But clearly thinner compared to original Stings’ “Nothing like the Sun” CD. Also the edge of the CD has an arrow like shape compared to a traditional square shape. I wonder if the CD has been polished? Because the seller charged me a good amount. Would it be possible if you have a look at your version of Tear for Fears album and share your observations? Thank you in advance.
Hello. Thank tou so much. Many albums have perfect dynamics however on remastered versions after 2008 or at digital platforms they are extremely loud and more bassy and they have lack of dynamics.
I've always found Fleetwood Mac's recordings to be some of the best sounding. The word that comes to mind is "clean". They're excellently mixed and mastered.
The Brothers In Arms album by dire straights won a Grammy Award in 1986 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, the 20th Anniversary Edition won another Grammy in 2006 for Best Surround Sound Album
80's releases by PolyGram group sound great - they were owned by Philips, so making the format sound best was their objective. IMO best disc for testing an audio system are 'Pure Perfect Sound' (this was was added to Philips CD Players), the Hightech Series (DDD classical recordings), and compilations like 'Hits on CD', 'Compact Hits' or other compilation albums from PolyGram.
Blood Sweat and Tears debut album one of the best recorded pop/rock albums ever. Have the 1985 cd pressing of Tears For Fears SFTBC and never thought it sounded great.
Christopher Cross was one of the first digital recordings. My cd sounds very thin and not good. Which version of the cd do you have there? I want to get a good lp pressing of it, as I have his second album another page on lp and that sounds much better than the cd version I have.

I agree. I think the production/engineering etc. is good. It’s just the cd mastering I believe that is so awful. Same w/Another Page. Both are thin, quiet w/no punch.
@@goleson100 I have an original US pressing on vinyl now and it sounds completely different from the cd version. It is much more listenable and has a smooth sound to it. The vinyl of Another Page has an excellent sound to it. The regular original cds I guess were mastered poorly.

great selection. Peter Cross yatch rock didn't fit in our metal teens, but my buddy bought it and it is a sonic masterpiece. I have two 1989 Seeds of love for comparing equipment. Totally agree with your other selections.

I followed your advice and got me a copy of Seeds of love original one. Paid 2,49e. Thought i knew Woman in Chains, Seeds of love and Advice for the young at heart. Talk about a blast, on a Marantz Focal combination. My Cock Robin best of from 91 also has a surprisingly good powerful sound. I thought these early cds were "poor" on the sonic front. Man I was wrong.

I agree with most of these except for Dire Straights--Brother In Arms. It has a particularly brittle and edgy sound typical of early digital recordings. Listen to their earlier pure analog Love Over Gold album, particularly 'Private Investigations'... especially on the extended play 12" 45 version. From around that time, Steely Dan--Gaucho, Leo Sayer--Endless Flight, Pink Floyd --The Wall, Ricky Lee Jones first album were all onic stunners
brittleness, exactly, I described it as 'grainy', it's the trailing edges of cymbals/hihats etc where it is particularly evident, and it's soundstage is almost non existent.. there's no depth in the recording for the most part.... I don't know why it is so highly rated, so many albums sound so much better, both all digital recordings as well as analog ones...

one of the best sounding albums ive ever heard is Micheal Chapmans-full qualified survivor.great bass powerful drumming and David bowies guitar player-mick rronson plays on it.every version, vinyl,cd sound great.the light in the attic cd reissue sounds great, also the bgo cd is excellent

what it is with this one is this: often the recording is made on long players vinyl first, this is then converting onto other form hats such as the smaller disc which is available,e in tiny ickle plastic thingie which is not cardboard, thus we see often that the digital effort is based firmly on the way it was made with acoustic analogue. nice - but a lot of listeners do not know that oh and pink flloyd. crikey
When it comes to vinyl even pressing in the same lot can vary wildly in quality. I have three Gordon Lightfoot Sundown first press vinyl LPs. One of them is outstanding. The other two are really good but not quite as good. When I play the really good one my wife is like "Wow".

The MFSL Ultradisc Gold CD from the 1990’s of Tears For Fears ‘Songs From The Big Chair’, used the pre-production mixdowns not used on any other release, even the MFSL vinyl. This gold CD will beat the pants off of every other issue, bar none, LP, CD, or otherwise.
I agre with tne Christopher Cross album, really clear and distinct sound. Tears For Fears was a great sounding album. Bought the CD. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon andWish You were here are great, both produced by Alan Parsons. Santana's Abraxas album is good. I got the remastered cd.
I have the 'nothing like the sun" LP by Sting and I must concur that it's superb sounding. I have the "brothers in arms" by Dire Straits SACD and it is my go to audiophile disc. I also have the "seeds of love" CD by Tears for Fears and I have to concur that it's very good sounding. Notable mentions include "cracked rear view" by Hootie and the Blowfish" cd and "yer favorites" by Tragically Hip remastered compilation cd.
Always get the first pressing of the CD if like to do your own restoration and mastering. Every newer one gets worse because someone else has already messed with it and in the loudness wars era drivin to clipping or over compressed. You just can’t fix that.
Agree with your choices. Scritti Politti’s “Provision” is amazing as well. All the Steely Dan and Alan Parson Project CD’s are incredible, too. Worst sounding CD is absolutely Journey’s “Departure” first release …hands down. They have since redone everything and now it’s much improved, but even the original album itself is terribly recorded. I’m surprised I’ve never seen anything on RU-vid about it.
I would totally agree and I have these albums, I always like the Bother in arms to listening to water flowing, it’s so clear. The sound is so open with incredible detail. The Waters is recorded in Q Sound, (this expands the sound outwards of the speakers by a special process) and the dogs barking are so far outside the speakers, it’s uncanny, BUT you MUST have the speakers set up properly and you have to be dead centre to get the full affect. These are completely different recording process to a group like Oasis, which has a hard sound compressed sound.

That is not a target release on the Tears For Fears cd album. That is a normal Mercury Records release cd label. Only Warner Bros. Records had Target releases. Do not use alcohol on the Mercury cd album releases, including cd album releases from Casablanca Records, Polydor Records and Polygram Records. They will smear and be ruined since they are screen printed on like.
Wow. I've owned a high end audio store for many years. The Dire Straits is certainly popular, which totally burned me out on it, but so many others that both sound better in my view and whose music I can listen to. Not to diss Christopher Cross. That was a great pop album. Try e.s.t.'s Live from Gothenburg. Amazing, especially the 3 LP set. A good friend has produced over 300 albums, mostly jazz and blues, plus had a Grammy nomination for best production, and he says that album is the best live album he's ever heard. Always looking for great sounding stuff and at least there was no Diana Krall (although my friend produces her guitarist's solo albums which are great musically and sonically)
Tear For Fears "Everybody Love a Happy Ending" has the worst compression I've encountered. In fact, it was the recording that forced me to search the Internet to find out why I hated listening to an album I liked. Dynamic Range Database told the tale. Horrible.
It's a crying shame that so many "remastered" CD releases are sonically inferior to their predecessors. It's appalling that mastering standards have moved so far in the direction of gratuitous compression. By the way, there are at least two distinct stereo mixes of _Amused to Death_ -- the 1990s original and the 2015 revision. I concur with your opinion about the album's sound quality vs. its overall quality.
I agree with most of them, Brothers In Arms is a great album as far as the music is concerned, but the recording quality is very poor, it was one of the first all digital recorded/processed/mastered etc (DDD as it was advertised) but it just sounds brittle, lacks dynamics...depth and so on.. it could have been so much better (and subsequent Dire Straits albums did sound better, as did Mark Knopfler's solo work after that).
Totally disagree. And no, you cannot hear that it’s digital. It’s mixed clear & bright. “On every Street” sounds even better. Knofler’s solo recent albums are lacking both in songwriting & sonics IMO.
I didn't say it sounds digital, I said it sounds britle, lacks dynamics etc.. what ever they did on that album, it is not a greatly mastered album at all compared to many others (not just Dire Straits) The music is great, some of my favourit tracks are on it, but it could have sounded so much better..... On Every Street is indeed leagues above Brothers in Arms, they don't even compare, Mark Knopfler's 'Golden Heart' album is also a great sounding one, but I am not that charmed by his later musical work and haven't bought much of that since... @@SPAZZOID100

My take is that because it was 'new' (being all digital etc.) and all the rage at the advent of the CD era it had everybody lyrical about the 'all digital' fact, not how it actually sounded.... to me it's one of the more mediocre recordings (even back then, while the music is great), I've heard the album numerous times on a variety of systems and formats, it sounds crystal clear, but flat as a pancake, there's no depth to the mix on most tracks, you don't get any sense of a soundstage except the title track, which does sound better than the rest tbh, and a bit tinny to me, the cymbals/hi hats on the opening track almost sound 'grainy' (can't think of a better word) to me, an album like 'on every street' sounds so much better, there's more space between instruments, clear sparkle to cymbals etc without becoming harsh, better low end too, and the same can be said for several older albums.. I still enjoy the music on it, just not how this album sounds...

Boston's debut is the best sounding vinyl album I've ever heard, it almost sounds like a CD, very bright. The Beatles "Abbey Road" is the worst sounding vinyl album. Muddy and bassy.
Listening to how sounds sound on a record is not entirely my thing. The Big Chair is a very boring album. Hurting is a much better album and it also sounds great. And when Wilson's remaster comes out, I'll buy it again to rediscover it as it is bound to sound great.
