The new trees are going to be a wonderful centerpiece for the gardens you envision. I am really liking the openness of the front beds.

Love your classy garden style. One of the prettiest garden styles on the internet! Your trees will grow quicker than you think. The lobster compost will speed that process up but I would wait till they settle in & research. Don't forget, your hydrangeas should be planted out 1 1/2 feet from your tree. I am 30 min. south of Natorps & I'm assuming your North? You are a Godsend to help me with my 6 year gardening journey. Genius idea on the 3 Topiaries out front. Great structure & art form. Praying for your neck as I am recovering from Cspine surgery. Blessings! Keep Growing!

Down here in Ga, the temps were in the 20's at the beginning of the week and today we're in the 80's. This Spring has been brutal on plants and grass, they're confused!

Matthew, I have 3 large tree, shrub, and perennial orders waiting to be shipped to me, so I know exactly what you mean by having eyes bigger than our planting area allows! As a gardener, this must be true, I have almost never seen a plant that doesn't intrigue me in one way or another, especially the new cultivars. Naturally, I seem to think that I have to get one (or 7) of everything, however, my lot size is limited, but my vision of having a grand garden is always front and center in my mind. I can't wait to see where you place all of your wonderful new plants. Have a wonderful weekend. ~Margie🤗🌲🐞🐝

So exciting to see your plans - I can’t wait to see how it looks this summer. I am also planting a few Brackens Brown Beauty trees this year and need to pop in a few more evergreens here and there. Thanks for the inspiration ❤

I am taking this spring easy as well, Matthew. I am enjoying my bulb show, and will order dirt to fill our raised beds soon. I was going to transplant some shrubs and perennials to a different spot, but a certain area of my yard did not make it through this winter. That is okay! ❤️ I'm in Columbus and if your friend doesn't want all of the Wee Whites I volunteer to take one please lol. I like your new trees! Looking forward to seeing your garden progress this year.

As this is the 1st year for me in this South Carolina garden, I am spending money on the fabulous Soil3 compost to amend the natural clay and have planted 3 Little Gem magnolias. I like their columnar form and think it will be the proper scale for a small garden. My experiment is 4 dogwoods known for their colored canes, 2 arctic fires and 2 arctic suns, so I can use them for wreaths and floral designs. Every garden is an experiment. Good luck with yours. You’ve installed great materials.

I love that Brackens Brown Magnolia. There is an established one near us in a KFC drive thru and it’s stunning. Just a bit pricey at Natorps. I planted 3 Fire Chief Arbs last week. It’s new to me so hope I like it. I picked up a Snow Fountain Cherry yesterday at Lowe’s for hubs who wants a weeping tree so bad.😊it’s a challenge to plant up 2 acres….where to begin.🤦🏼‍♀️

Good morning! I’m still working on clean up, but I have lettuce and potatoes planted already. I’m trying not to let the clean up part get me down. I also have lots of projects I had planned to do in the winter because it’s cooler, but never got around to. Zone 8a so it’ll be too hot soon to do those. I think it’s supposed to get up to 88 today. I have to transplant shrubs that I planted in dry shade that aren’t doing well. It’s good to know that I’m not the only gardener doing clean up.😉

I'm in the Kentucky area and i too am not as motivated to do my bed clean outs this year. It has been so cold off and on that I feel removing any leaves or cutting back the branches may cause die back on the plants. Strange start to the growing season for sure.

Hi Matthew! Congrats on getting your two new trees planted! That Southern Magnolia is beautiful! It's nice to have them in now so you can plan out the rest of the areas around them. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress in those areas, and other areas on your property. Thank you so much for sharing!

The trees are fantastic! I planted 3 bowling balls a few years ago and the bunnies decimated them. I think they are so lovely but I won’t be able to plant them again. I planted 5 Let’s Dance Can Do last fall. I am hoping they survived the winter! I did plant a number of Wee Whites last fall as well and hoping they made it. They are looking rather sad. Your garden is a true inspiration.

Nice groupings! Those Fire Chiefs are not winter damaged, that's their winter color. Starts in late Fall and continues to spring. Looks like they are on fire. Gorgeous! Will bring out the underside color of the mag leaves. They will go all green into summer. Enjoy!

Hey from south Ga! Love the magnolia! I sure hope you get some flowers from it. Isn’t it one of the best fragrances in the garden! I think you’ve made great progress in your garden. Suggestion: I would put some of the Lets Dance hydrangeas on each side of your house for balance. If you put all of them around that one tree it will look like a donut and not the natural flowing aesthetic that I think you have going on in most of your garden. I think stick to “layers” with tall, medium, and short things in front. Create mounds of good garden soil in various areas for all those annuals. Sort of like a raised bed on top of the clay. That’s what everyone did back in Atlanta where I’m originally from. Atlanta’s soil is nothing but clay and rock. Good Luck with the terrible Ohio weather. I always feel sorry for you in that frozen windy place!
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
The other side of the house is south facing with much more sun exposure so macrophyllas are likely going to burn on that side. I’m going to put a few different varieties I’m trialing, but because it’ll be much hotter I don’t know that they will perform well.
