www.theamericansouthwest.com/... The Spanish Southwest: The Dominguez-Escalante Expedition of 1776; An Almighty Gamble- Part 1 of the American Southwest Podcast by Thomas Wayne Riley. In 1776, two Spanish Friars led a team of 10 men throughout the American Southwest and covered more ground unknown to Europeans than even Lewis & Clark. Their goal was to reach California. In this episode of The American Southwest Podcast, I lay the groundwork for the expedition and cover some history of the Spanish Southwest up to that point, and especially since the reconquest of New Mexico. The pictures are pictures I've taken of the places the D&E Expedition travelled through. They are in order of where they visited and are of: Santa Fe & Vargas Statue in Santa Fe. Taos Mountains near the Rio Grande at the Wild River National Recreation Area in New Mexico. The Rio Grande. Ghost Ranch and Kitchen Mesa and the Chama River near Abiquiu. The Brazos Cliffs from the Brazos Summit. Sleeping Ute Mountain and the San Juan Mountains from Mesa verde National Park. Mesa Verde Ruins. black Canyon of the Gunnison. They did not go there but they went near it. Colorado National Monument. They did not go there but they went near it. Provo, Utah. The west side of Zion National Park at Kolob. Travelled within eyesight. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah. They travelled very near it. Vermillion Cliffs. Lees Ferry and Marble Canyon. The Colorado River and the Paria River confluence. Horseshoe Bend near Page, Arizona. El Moro National Monument in New Mexico. El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico. Petroglyphs National Monument near Albuquerque. Would have travelled near it. Galisteo Basin with the Jemez Mountains. Kasha Katuwe Ten Rocks National Monument in New Mexico near Santa Fe.

Very cool and often over looked portion of American history. My favorite story related to this topic is the journey of Cabeza de Vaca.

I think that story is unbelievably cool. They had quite the adventure! I bring the survival tale up in my first episode over the Spanish in the southwest! www.theamericansouthwest.com/podcast/the-ancient-ones-the-last-conquistadors-of-san-felipe-del-nuevo-mxico

Thank you!! And that is very awesome. I would love to do that. There are still portions I’ve never been to! Mostly the Colorado Utah border portions near Dino national monument.

Good history, thank you! I made a Dominguez and Escalante video as well. More focused on the Crossing of the Fathers under Lake Powell.

We just hiked Domingues canyon and I am wondering why the well built bridges in 1888 and 1905 (I mean they REALLY wanted a good bridge) over the Colorado river there.
