When friends and I saw sparks on their Two Hands One Mouth Tour I was expecting the infamous multi media extravaganza wild crazy meta mind bending fourth wall breaking visuals and skits backed by an impeccable live band. What we got instead was the two of them on stage, Ron with a keyboard Russ with a mic and that was it. No backing tracks. But fuck it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, he hardly used any reverb on his voice either. Was impeccable all on its own, they even made My Baby's Taking Me Home sound incredibly moving, dynamic and epic and how the hell is that even possible? It's the same words over and over like a mantra until it reaches the punchline. To make it from the off ridiculously genius Ron even did a medley which he just simply called "a gentle warm up" all on his own, spanning decades in minutes. We were thrilled! As the double feature set rolled on.. We were so entranced, we decided to take Ron on in starring matches, which 😂 he rose to the challenge he saw us gazing at him and he took us on. It was really something ha ha I'll never forget that. I love this band and seeing them so nakedly, without any effects or over the top high budget show really felt like something special and daring.. They even confirmed this at the end of their show relating to their earliest days as a cabaret duo on a club circuit and said they wanted to do a tour harking back to that. this film also delivered on every level without ruining the mystique of this act

This movie made me a fan of theirs. I had always dismissed their music as silly and gimmicky, but it makes a world of difference watching them perform. Thanks to this movie I now "get" Sparks and have nothing but respect and admiration for the Mael Bros. They're musical and artistic marvels. Definitely worthy of HOF.

In 1974 I was an 18-year-old kid playing bass in a glam band...in Paducah, Kentucky. Of course we loved Sparks. Wondering aloud once why they were more popular in the UK than at home (we'd first read about them in "Melody Maker" -- which, miraculously, was available at a Paducah bookstore), the answer I got from our guitarist was, "Because they're too good."

The film is a treasure trove of Sparks sights and sounds, emphasizing their artistic integrity, determination and humor. I wish it dived deeper into the music itself, which to me is the most important thing, but it will be a stepping stone bringing new people to Sparks music, and that is a good thing. For me, a fan since 1974, it was a feast, and I felt glad (and proud) for the Maels to receive such a wonderful tribute.

Since when they brightened up the room a gloomy rainy day back when I was a 10 year old girl, filling my mind and heart with rainbows, flowers and magic... I have loved Sparks. The song that all of a sudden, that rainy day, was playing on the TV, was "Hospitality On Parade". This I learned later. I had never heard anything like it before, and I did not catch the name "Sparks", nor did I catch the name of the song. Back then it was rare for 10 year olds in Norway to speak English, but not understanding the lyrics did not matter at all; I was in love with the music and the voice. I had no way of finding out who they were, and I went about my life with the song popping up in my mind now and then, keeping me company and making me wistful. Then, almost exactly a year later, I heard the song's first notes and recognized it immediately; it was my older cousin, he was playing the album "Indiscreet".... - I was overjoyed! I will always be grateful to him for helping me discover Sparks. And for some reason I was under the impression, up until embarrassingly recently (several years ago now though), that the brothers were English. There was just this odd quirky quality and sound and feeling about them. Indiscreet is and will be for the rest of my life, my favorite album of theirs. Thank you, Ron and Russel !

How is it that Americans were able to accept the fantastic music that had come from the UK for so many years yet widely ignore a band that originated here in the US that the UK widely accepted and revered? Underrated for those who do not appreciate talent and creativity maybe, but the rest of us have always stuck with them throughout these years and have always been relevant in the music world. They can never be accused of becoming complacent with their music.

Four songs on it primed me for my life as a lover of music, Beat The Clock by Sparks, my introduction to electropop, Babylon's Burning by Ruts, my introduction to punk, Death Disco by P.I.L, my introduction to post punk and Conscious Man by Jolly Brothers, my introduction to reggae.

Go back through the Sparks back catalogue. Listen to their varied music but themed to sparks. Hear the subtle things in it like the rhythm or its feel or style. Then look at the date when it was made. My god then you realise that they were making bits of say the 80s in the 70s. They adapt to eras in a sparks kind of way.

24 studio albums under their name 'Sparks' 1 collaborate album, 'FFS', with Franz Ferdinand 1 live album, cuts from the 'Two Hands One Mouth' tour 2012, no band, only Ron + synthesizer and Russell + vocal cords 😉 The latest released album is 'A Steady Drip Drip Drip', which is absolutely awesome!! Stylistically, as usual with Sparks, wide from the reflective and romantic 'All That' via the mood lifting 'Onomato Pia' and 'Lawnmower', the sad 'One For The Ages', to the crazy 'Existential Threat', the latter with a FANTASTIC video by Cyriak 👍🤩. They are recording the 25th album right now. The brothers Ron and Russell Mael: From Los Angeles, started as a band, Russell played the bass guitar (!), around 1969-1970, got a "complete" band; the brothers Earl and James (Jim) Mankey on guitars and bass guitar, Harley Feinstein on drums, tried to get a contract, the one and only person who believed in them was TODD RUNDGREN. At that time they called themselves 'Halfnelson', and the first edition of the first album was self named 'Halfnelson' and Rundgren produced it. It didn't sell much, the manager wanted them to change the name to 'The Sparks Brothers' which they refused. It ended with the compromise "Sparks". That album was re-issued as 'Sparks', still didn't sell. -72 came the second 'A Woofer in a Tweeter's Clothing', but they suddenly had got connection with England. Ron and Russell moved to England, put together a new band, spent 1973 playing on smaller venues but also on TV shows, also on the Continent of Europe, AND writing new material, lots of it obviously. 1974 the break through came with the album 'Kimono My House' and the hit 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us', in November the same year came 'Propaganda'. Anyway, their first recordings ever were made in January 1967, not as Halfnelson or Sparks, though. Together with a couple of friends the rented a studio per hour and made a couple of songs, whereof one made it's way out on YT, 'Computor Girl'. I want to know HOW that idea came up, a computor girl? That year computors were in a size as a house, the first message from one computor to another were sent and it was many years before even a thought of global dating and porn sites! The lyrics talks about that his Computor Girl 'has no limbs' etc, that tells it's not a robot, it's a COMPUTOR! Surrealistic with phycadelic music and that lyrics! It's a shame the sound isn't better, it's a cool song actually! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S4BoBKbFi1U.html The rest is to be seen in the documentary! 😁 Later 'Computor Girl' had its "official release" on the 'The Best of Sparks, Paste Tense' album November 2019. As an introduktion to Sparks, that's a superb collection! A couple of different editions, vinyls or CDs. I recommend the 3 CDs issue, it's worth the money between it and the shorter 2 CDs. Enjoy! 😁 💖 💖 💖

Same here, Propaganda then Kimono My House, both in 1974 but nobody wanted anything to do with them, they were just a little to different AND they never came to Winnipeg to play live.

I don't know when I'll be able to watch this in my country, but ever since this trailer dropped I've been breathing Sparks! Looking forward to seeing all the janky 80s footage upscaled and cleared.

This looks awesome - can’t wait. If ever a band has been “underrated” it’s these brothers.

My favorite band. A detective, my neighbor told me to check them out after meeting me for about 30 seconds. Been my favorite ever since for about 10 years now. Kind geniuses. Definitely making the world a better place. Thank you sparks! Rock on! 👊🐺🌎🧙‍♂️👍🎵🎶🎼

I discovered them thanks to "The Existential Threat" on Cyriak's channel. Been going through their back-catalogue ever since.
