I can’t stop recommending this book. I read it earlier this year and I was just in awe of how creative of a writer Simon Jimenez is. I don’t read as much as i would like, but I just can’t remember the last time I was speechless at somebody’s ability to interweave and guide you through a very complex and layered story so well. I’m still in awe.

Thank you for your beautiful thoughts on this book. I am now more excited than nervous about reading it. Ever since I read "Piranesi" for the first time I have been searching for books with a similar atmosphere, or books that are vastly unique.

Wow, I have seen quite a few gush reviews of this book now, but yours beats them all. This was such a passionate and soulful review, I loved hearing you praise this story. After falling in love with The Vanished Birds, I have been dying to get to Spear. Just saving it for the right time, I don't want to ruin a potential new favourite by reading it in the wrong mood. Also, I had no idea this had queer representation, we love to see it! Fantastic review, I can't wait to read it myself this year 🤩

I’m so glad I found this channel. You talk about books with so much passion. I love Spear Cuts as well. Took some time for me to get used to the second person but there is a purpose to the pov. I was surprised by how super dark it was at times because the book cover says otherwise.

So this is why you haven't been answering my badgering questions about your thoughts and whether you finished! It makes me so happy that you loved it! "The flower was cut from the stem. Its red petals strewn." Now that you mention it, the comparison to Susanna Clarke is spot on! Jimenez and Clarke both, while still being distinct and identifiably theirs, shift their writing styles to compliment and enhance the story being told in each work they write. The Power of your reviews is in the Emotional and Personal truth that you bring to them. This shit was, in the words of Tuco Salamanca, "Tight Tight Tight!" That out of the way, I wonder how you'll like The Vanished Birds. Johanna from @johannareads liked Birds more than Spear but thought that Spear was likely the better book. In any case, Jimenez is such an original author, that I'll probably read anything he puts out. This means I have to get my hands on The Spear Cuts Through WaterASAPp!

I love how you were able to connect part of the book with part of your childhood. It really helps the connection to the book and makes for a great review! I've heard others speak glowingly of the book so I'll add it to my list. I love the idea of 'acid fantasy'.
