The Special Encounters of Fallout 2 

Heh. I found the Cafe of Broken Dreams before meeting the Bridge Keeper. Because of that, I got a different answer for the "Which Fallout 1 non-player characters survived for Fallout 2" question. The response I got was; "Wait, do random encounters and Easter Eggs count?"

Fallout 2 is much more supernatural than the others lol.

But imagine being such a successful troll that you are immortalised in one of the greatest games of all time.

I've played this game from start to finish more than a dozen times, and I've never encountered some of these. The vendor North of Modoc, for instance. I like to play my FO2 games with a really high Luck stat anyway, so I usually find most of them by the end of the game. I think the Bridge of Death is my favorite. Somehow, it fits right in there. I used to drop off unused party members at the Cafe of Broken Dreams, though I love Oxhorn's idea of utilizing the Shark Club as a player base after taking out Mr. Bishop. I imagine they'd like it there better. I only encountered the pariah dog when I was playing with a low Luck character, but I never finished this game. A Luck score of 1 combined with the "Jinxed" trait is absolutely lethal! I once started a Fallout 1 character like this, and selected "Bloody Mess" as his other trait. Want to guess what happened? When I made it to Vault 15, I tried punching the massive radscorpion that sometimes spawns in that area, but rolled a critical miss and punched myself to death! And since I had "Bloody Mess", the death animation showed my arm and half of my torso being blown off. That's the most epic fail I've ever seen.

We need the Pariah Dog as a Fallout 4 companion. I know there is the wounded dog that you can name Sparky or Mutt but I like the idea of having a dog that causes bad luck for everyone. Maybe they should add a black cat ghoul instead for the same effect.

Those “sleeping with the staff” jokes would NEVER make it into a modern game, I love it

To be fair, the entire running line of the original fallout series was not to take them very seriously, and was in many ways just a really good parody game

The shuttle craft named "Torres" was a reference to the character from Star Trek. Also a fairly funny one. Anytime Torres was in or piloting a shuttlecraft... it pretty much always crashed. I sort of thought the "Café of Broken Dreams" might've been a reference to "Quantum Leap" and its ending. The one where the main character ends up in what is essentially a bar/café thing at the end of the universe with people he helped ending up there, and him unsure about what to do. But... maybe I'm just weird and find connections where none exist.

Loved the movie references, although in Hitchiker's, it wasn't a bowl of daisies, but petunias. No wonder they always think "not again!!'

oxhorn you missed the Solar Scorcher in the Guardian of Forever

The guardian of forever has a unique weapon that you did not mention It's an energy weapon with infinite ammo but only works at day time

You missed the solar scorcher in the guardian of forever vault lying on the ground but it might not have been in your game but it's also very small

To me, this is the best Fallout game ever. Feels like a proper adventure!

Instead of a bubble gum wrapper, how about a shirt that comes in men’s women’s and children’s sizes and a wide array of colors. You could also put it on various other items like smart phone cases, pillows, posters, mugs, stickers, prints, etc. I think I said all that correct.

AFAIK the hand grenade of Antioch wasn't cut from the game, but the second part of the encounter couldn't be accessed due to a bug. A small patch fixed the problem and you could actually get the grenade with like 4000 damage.

There are quite a few “4th wall breaks” in these special encounters

Back when Fallout had smart charm, as opposed to dumb charm. A Star Trek special encounter is way funnier than Vault Boy going “DUHHH” when I get the Idiot Savant perk.

I was surprised you didn't include the first frank Horrigan random encounter in the main playtrough. It is part of the main story, sorta, and a lot of foreshadowing and hinting as what to come (as well as the first contact the player ever get with the enclave, not counting the crashed vertibird in Klamath) At the same time, this encounter alway felt weird,a bit clunky and out of place. As in, why the hell would frank Horrigan just let the payer walk away from this rather than attacking the obvious witness ? (I mean on a gameplay perspective it's obvious why, the player wouldn't stand a chance in hell. But plot wise ?). So I suppose leavin it out does make for a sloghtly better narative. Oh and the fallout bible did answer as to what knowlege the man had. Apparently he was one of the early reseacher who were working on the modified FEV research and then defected from the enclave.

Because being The General was a fucking chore. Those raiders would suffer, I'd see to that. Because Piper was waiting wearing ONLY HER HAT! So Garvey and I went out together, Hoping the raiders were freezing in this weather. One by one, we made them all drop dead, All the while I wished I could crawl back into bed. For once again Piper was waiting wearing only her HAT. And In case it hasn't been made clear, I'm tapping that! Her ass not the news cap, You sarcastic sap When the last raider cried out, begging for mercy, I shot him twice in the face because I felt surly. With the raiders all dead my bloodlust was fed. I could finally go home and crawl back into bed. So Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night and always remember that war… war never changes.

Managed to see the majority of these. Have you ever covered the guy in the Den who asks you for caps in a side quest for Rebecca & says he'll pay you back? I remember finally seeing him again after many in game months and he became rich & gave me about 2000 caps.

Its really a spoof. But still, its done in a way that didn't crap on the original.

yes ive been waiting for this. i think random and special encounters is what makes me love the fallout games. im happy it started from the beginning of the series. i started with fallout 3 and thats what keeps me around in those games is the not knowing what you could meet on the road, and the story's !! thanks OX

Vaul 13 in guardian of forever encounter has the solar scorcher weapon on a storage room floor. Great weapon to have.

There is also an encounter with a reference to Doctor Who series. IIRC there is just a blue police box that disappears after a while.

the Restoration project adds a great deal to the game, including quests from npc's in game referencing the Fema Site and the Cathedral, you are missing a lot without this mod

The music at the end of the video (called "Gold Slouch" in the game) is also a reference to the Stephen King miniseries The Stand - the 1994 version, where that theme appears. The series is also about a post-apocalyptic world, with some nuclear touches as well, althought the apocalypse in that isn't nuclear.

Hia oxhorn, the Level with the geckos is a cronicals of ridiock reference as the levels supported to be pitch black other than the glow from the red pools. Without the ability to see in the dark perk most chars are completely boned.

Oxhorn, dogmeat was partially inspired by the dog from mad Max but mostly derived from the movie 'A Boy And His Dog.'. Even the name Dogmeat comes from that older movie. And the movie was also shown at a Fallout 4 launch party held by Bethesda. Wow, you dropped the ball on that one.

You forgot to mention what the bowl of petunias thought as it was about to hit the ground along with the whale. "Oh no, not again".

Alien blaster is the best weapon in the game. I always defaulted to the turbo plasma rifle for some reason. IIRC it is more effective against Enclave armour, plus huge range, but maybe I should dig out my old fallout 2 disk and give it a try!

you can get the holy hand grenade, it's not excluded, i've seen the encounter, it happens after the first Arthur encounter, all of them are stationed outside the entrance of the cave fighting the rat or maybe the rat was inside the cave, it's blurry, the holy hand grenade is there as well in the cave. You can pickpoket the knights for some extra nuclear ammo I think but i'm not sure, it's a blurry memory. there is a solar scorcher that you've missed where the guardian of forever is. toxic waste encounter - you need really bad luck there is also a rave party encounter near the den.

my favorite random encounter that happens... well random but not on low levels. you encounter yakuza attacking raiders who are attacking a caravan who are defending themselves from geckos. most popular area up to 4 squares up and left from san francisco. or in navarro area enclave attacking any wastelanders x animal encounter

The vault dweller monument is just me when someone has a diffrent arguement

Being unable to dismiss my spouse was the worst thing in this game. Miria never levels up and can’t fight if her life depended on it. Luckily, most locations that require a cover like Navarro work with a single companion. Just drop everybody off at the nearby Cafe of Broken Dreams. Still, a lot of my play through had to be adjusted to keep my companions alive.

You should show cut content of fallout2 like Bobby the orphan that needs help to get The Den kids family, or Sulik's sister and his tribe. You can restore the files or install Restoration project for F2 in NMA (No mutants allowed). It also includes customizable character creation like changing the looks. Companions wear armor, new visuals, and even a pop culture special encounter.

It took me a good two months to realize that the three black haired models were the three pre-made characters for FO1, as there dialogue is related to the types of players they were designed for

Fun fact: In Fallout Shelter you get a quest to go check on some Vault-Tec experiments. The people you meet within dress, talk, and act like people of the Medieval Era. This could be potentially mean that those people from the Brotherhood of Steel (Who might I add were making a Monty Phyton reference.) came from that Vault, or at the very least might have been related to it via ancestry.

The Guardian of Forever is a cool easter egg. Literally travelling to another time and space and, well, it's the terminator timeloop. The Vault Dweller's Tribal Descendant accidentally damages the waterchip, after having timetravelled, which causes that the Vault Dweller is sent out to find a replacement chip, which ensured he/she would end up exiled from the vault in the end - which ends up with him creating the tribal village with some of the other Vault Dwellers that didn't wish to stay in the vault. Boom, some 60 years later and you have The Chosen One that will eventually timetravel back and accidentally damage the waterchip. Terminator timeloop.

Interplay sure did love its pop culture. Their mix of horror and humour was sublime. (Yeah Fallout isn't a horror game but I'm sure you see my point)

Maybe Dogmeat is an immortal, nothing seems to go against it being the same dog, heck mama Murphy almost talks about Dogmeat like he's traveled and been through a lot.

If salesman has Alien Blaster in his inventory, you can pickpocket it. This way you will save some money. Also, although he sells only one Alien Blaster, he has two of them in his inventory. So you get two of them for free.
