We extend a warm welcome to The Africa News Network.
In June 1960, The Republic of Congo (modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo) celebrated its independence from Belgium with King Baudouin of Belgium in attendance. During his address, King Baudouin expressed admiration for King Leopold II, despite the fact that Leopold's rule resulted in the deaths of over 10 million Congolese people. He suggested that the Congolese should not make any changes to what Leopold II had done for the country unless they were certain they could do better.
King Baudouin's remarks were deeply patronizing and insensitive, considering the brutal suffering endured by the Congolese people under King Leopold II's regime. However, when Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba took the stage, he made sure to challenge the king's perspective and prevent him from having the final say.
King Baudouin was displeased with Lumumba's speech, and it marked a turning point that sealed Lumumba's fate. Three months after his outster, with the assistance of the United States' CIA, Lumumba was assassinated.

Lumumba was betrayed by the people he was standing for.He stood for African dormination in African matters in Congo instead of Belgian dormination. He was termed as anti-white and as a result the Belgian government waged war on Patrice's government by sponsoring a coup in conjunction with the USA who feared Patrice was a communist. But Patrice was a neutralist he was neither communist not capitalist since both ideologies supported colonialism. He was antitribal in Congo and as and history remembers him as a symbol of national unity. He died his head unbowed to the oppresors.Had he not been betrayed by his own people, Congo could have been at a better place today. @@kulturfreund6631Communism believed in the inevitable global revolution from the decay of late-stage Capitalism. It believed that the Capitalist powers would necessarily pre-emptively fight to eliminate the communist regimes so as to prevent the Communists from ever achieving this victory naturally. Thus in order to ensure the future communist world revolution and current survival, the Communists believed in supporting communist regimes and communist political parties by all means and making sure those communist parties were subservient to the Communist party of the USSR, even if local politics and liberty must he subverted and people suppressed for this objective. In this way Communism also supported colonialism, by replacing Imperial Capitalist Colonialism with Communist driven Neo-Imperial Colonialism for the Geopolitical benefit of the USSR and/or China.

The Soviets funded resistance movements throughout Africa - the same movements that threw off the chains of colonial occupation. The Western powers financed reactionary movements within Africa, including some that were tribalist in nature, to continue colonialism. They used Apartheid South Africa, the country of my birth, as a foothold, much in the same way that Israel today is being used by the US as a foothold in the Middle East.

Rest in power, brother Lumumba. And they have the audacity to call the usa a champion of freedom; itself born out of captivity, hatred, murder and everything against the faith they profess to adhere to.

Much respect to Patrice Lumumba. The African countries where mostly blacks live hold some of the worlds largest precious metals, minerals, precious stones and oil deposits. Riches right under their feet, the people in these countries will never see prosperity like those in the middle east.

The horrors visited upon the African people have not abated in over 500 years. The despicable legacy of European colonial oppression reverberates to this day. Leopold II, the Berlin Conference of 1884, both world wars, and the counter measures to the struggles against European strangleholds continue to exert pressure on this continent.

The colonial entity looks for and seduces the individuals who can get sucked away... it's how they operate. They are a useless thing, when all brothers stay strong and are loyal to each other.

There is nothing to state Lumumba would have been good for the Congo if he was not betrayed by his own people. Many African leaders start off doing good deeds, but then descend into the same old cycle of courruption and mismanagement . Most of the African leaders since colonialism were so bad, so murderous, so corrupt, you would find it difficult to find worse leaders anywhere on Earth. At the time of Independence most African nations were vastly richer than most Asian nations who also suffered colonialism. Today while African nations labour under a poverty induced by their own corrupt, selfish, evil leaders Asian nations are now moving into being classed as 1st world nations because many of their leaders have been the opposite to African leaders since independence.

@@fsaldan1 The level of ignorance here is amazing. He asked for assistance from the Russians only after being denied such from the UN. Russia only sent some technical advisors. And even if he had been a Russian puppet, what was the alternative? Being a Western puppet like Mobotu that willingly let Western powers plunder his country's resources for personal gain? Google!

Perhaps you didn't that the West has assassinated countless visionary African leaders and actively stood in the way of the continent's progress? How many visionary South Korean, Singaporean, Japanese and Taiwanese leaders have have been assassinated? ZERO. Not only that, countless billions were also poured into their economies. "United States economic assistance to the Republic of China on Taiwan was large - $1.4 billion over the period 1951-1965." "From 1946 to 1976, the United States provided $12.6 billion in economic assistance to the Republic of Korea." "Total U.S. assistance to Japan for the years of the occupation, from 1946-1952 was roughly $2.2 billion ($15.2 billion in 2005 dollars), of which almost $1.7 billion was grants and $504 million was loans." "The United States provided massive economic aid to British Hong Kong government and opened up its market to facilitate Hong Kong’s industrialization." These countries/regions were fortunate not to have any natural resources that could be exploited. And they were all safely tucked away from Russian influence. These are the main reasons the West allowed these places to develop unmolested.
