Steve Winwood. Mulit-instrumentalist and soulful singer. One of the greatest British blues rock pop artists ever. Was in Traffic, Blind Faith, a long, successful solo career. In the R&R Hall of Fame. Worth diving into his catalogue, fellas.
@@AirplayBeatsyou guys gotta do a few more Blind Faith. Stevie W. with members of Traffic and Cream including Clapton and Ginger Baker. They only had one album. You guys did Can’t Find My Way Home but there’s several more bangers off that one LP. Try “Sea of Joy” or “Had to Cry Today”. Straight bangers with Winwood killing it.
Stevie was a Ray Charles fanatic. Brother Ray was his hero, and he tried to sound as much like Ray as he could. He was just a kid from England. Steve Winwood you've herard with Traffic, and Blind Faith.
Steve Winwood was in his teens here, before he formed Traffic. He did a great version of Georgie On My Mind also. Spencer Davis Group had 2 huge hits with I'm A Man and Gimme Some Lovin'.
That's Steve Winwood - definitely influenced by Ray Charles. He became singer and keyboardist with the Spencer Davis Group at the age of 14. Spencer Davis is the guitarist.
Steve Winwood, the incredible singer/pianist, was only a teenager here. It really is unbelievable that THAT voice came out of him. I agree with La… if I wasn’t looking at the video, I would’ve thought it was Ray Charles.
WOW!! I am a huge Winwood fan, and have a lot of his catalog, but never heard the Spencer Davis Group, except for I'm a Man & Gimme Some Loving. WOW!! I never new Steve could sing like that--it's like he channeled Ray Charles. Completely genuine, not a hint of artifice. WOW! Many thanks La, Che, and subscribers.
Thanks for that, never heard it before. I knew Steve Winwood was a great singer, but didn't realize he could channel Ray Charles like that, and I think Ray's one of the greatest ever. Crazy. I heard an interview w/ Chris Blackwell, who got Spencer Davis Group their record deal, and he said he heard a white kid that sounded like Ray Charles when he discovered them. Now I get it and believe it.
This is from a movie, that's why the band is wearing pajamas. That's Steve Winwood, you reacted to him when you did the band Traffic. Spencer Davis Group came first, then Traffic. Steve is ultra-talented! Every Little Bit Hurts, It Hurts Me So, Let Me Down Easy, Keep On Running, Hey Darling, I'm A Man are just a few tunes to get you started on young Steve's (he was 14 when he joined the Spencer Davis Group) first band. Enjoy!
"Stevie" Winwood was a young teenager here; started in Spencer Davis Group @ 14. That young British kid had alot of talent and soul! (Remember him from Traffic?) He played killer organ alongside Jimi Hendrix in "Voodoo Chile", the long version on Electric Ladyland (track #4). Def. worth a listen!
Steve Winwood was such a young man back in those days.I think he was like 14 when he started playing for Spencer Davis. His brother Muff was in the group too.
First, I want to thank you for doing this!! La, you had thought that I did. He sounds like Mr. Charles! .Yes, Steve Winwood can SANG! I believe he was 15 or 16 when they recorded this. Give Me Some Lovin is also worth checking out. Excellent reaction, fellas. I figured you would like this. Thank you 😊 🙏 ❤
That was Steve Winwood of Traffic, solo career and Blind Faith with Eric Clapton - at age 14 he was a session artist for when Ray Charles toured England
Steve Winwood is an icon of icons. He was famous by 14 yrs old, when he joined this band. As a teen American Blues musicians touring in the UK would hire him to back them. He'd been playing piano in British pubs since he was 8 yrs old, with his dad and brother. He a multi-instrumentalist, legendary singer and has written some incredible songs. He was in a supergroup, Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix sought him out to play on Voodoo Chile with him, and Jimi wanted to be in a band with Steve. He's worked with everyone & is universally respected. His bands are this one, Traffic, Blind Faith & a huge solo career in the 80s where he won a few Grammy's. You probably know the one with Chaka Khan, 'Higher Love'. Keep digging down the hole with Steve. Love you guys.
That is the actual band. Steve Winwood is one of the bluesiest singers ever. You need to hit live versions of them performing Gimme Some Lovin’ and I’m a Man. But there are several others that you’ll love. His catalogue is a deep dive.
As a older white woman, I want to Thank the British invasion for bringing back the Blues to America! We didn't get to hear songs like the Blues cause of Jim Crowe laws (?). Steve Winwood can sing ANYTHING...❤✌🏼 Loved him with all the bands he was in, Spencer Davis was the beginning, Traffic, Blind Faith,& solo Steve Winwood. ICON!!
From prodigy to legend, Stevie is one of a handful of modern artists who deserves the term musical genius. If the Willie Mays of Music is Stevie Wonder, then Winwood is the Mickey Mantle (RIP Willie)
"Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" was a hit for Bessie Smith in 1929. She dropped it two weeks before the Wall Street Crash signaled the start of the Great Depression, giving the song greater cachet than it might otherwise have enjoyed. PS. For another Steve Winwood jam, check out Traffic "Freedom Rider".
'Gimme Some Lovin' & 'I'm a Man' (famously covered by Chicago) are other iconic songs from The Spencer Davis Group, sung by Steve Winwood. You've probably heard 'Gimme Some Lovin', one of the most famous rock/pop songs ever.
The singer is Steve Winwood, at about 16 or 17 years old. Spencer Davis is quite a bit older, guitarist. Steve's brother 'Muff' Winwood on bass. Peter York on drums. Formed in 1963 when Steve was 16 (b May 12 1948). Last big hit, 'I'm A Man' in 1967 covered by Chicago on their first album 'Chicago Transit Authority'. Both deserve a listen. Cheers ✌
I saw them in 1964or 65 at the Empire Pool , Wembly, North London, as well as many other groups.and singers .Lulu ( 15 years of age ) , Rolling Stones , Beatles .Stevie Winwood was 15 or 16 years of age .I was( body, not soul)14 or 15 years of age. A nice harmless experience .God Bless those that made it possible for me and.others to witness the Beatles .A special time , i believe.Good Luck.❤
This song is 101 years old this year. Jimmie Cox wrote it in 1923, and Bessie Smith first recorded it in 1929. You should listen to her version. It's on RU-vid. There's also a great live version by blues legend Alberta Hunter from 2015.
Steve Winwood: whatever he touched it went gold, like Vince Clarke 20 years later with sythpop, or Steve Wilson in the last two decades with prog metal. There were always some musical genii who were so diverse and creative and played with or for many bands. Steve was one of them.
GOSH - Winwood was SO YOUNG, HERE!! He is a TREASURE!! LOVED HIM with The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, AND Blind Faith!! Ya'll should check out more of their stuff! GREAT BANDS!! AND: Steve Winwood's SOLO stuff is ALSO GREAT!!! :) HUGS, YA'LL!!
Here Winwood does a great impression of Ray Charles. Winwood was a multi talented musician who could morph into whatever a band needed to be successful.
Steve Winwood on vocals is a legend. Check out Gimme Some Lovin or I'm a Man by Spencer Davis Group ( the guitarist) check out Winwoods later career with Traffic & his solo material. My favorite from the late 80s or early 90s was a song called Roll With It.
Steve Winwood at 18. You’ve seen him lead Traffic! Spencer Davis was one of the other group members in that film. So Stevie started in Spencer Davis ( I’m A Man is their classic) then started Traffic and then Blind Faith with Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker.
He and Clapton were.are really into the blues. Windwoods one of my all time favorites! Thanks for sharing this...never saw it before!! I like his song and video Roll with it. Not as bluesy as this one, but really good.
Steve Winwood (lead singer) is a musical genius. Definitely check out the song Gimmie Some Lovin'. Also, Traffic with Winwood is a great band to check out.
The great, Stevie Winwood, in his formative years!! He would go on to form Traffic, play in Blind Faith, have many successful collaborations, as well as a huge solo career! Few on his level, for my money! John Barleycorn Must Die!
Great reaction !! Steve Winwood is really one of the greats as members of this chat also confirm! His career spans decades and he was part of several legendary groups like this one, Blind Faith, Traffic and more. He had some big hits in the 1980s & 90s as well. “Gimme Some Lovin'” was released in October 1966 and his first big hit. Dear Mr. Fantasy, Back in the High Life and Higher Love you have probably heard in the background while shopping ... Like much of the music I listened to growing up! LOL
Stevie Winwood was all of 17 when they recorded this song in early 1966. Yes this is lip synching, done for the movie this clip is from, but it's really the band playing it. I'm pretty sure the movie was called The Ghost Goes Gear, gear being slang for cool.
I highly recommend hearing Steve Winwood in the super group, STOMU YAMASTA'S GO. The band had 5 members ... GO means Five in Japanese. All of the 5 were between bands. There's Steve Winwood on vocals and keys, Al DiMeola on guitar, Michael Shrieve on drums (he was the drummer for Santana at Wookstock and Santana's first seven albums). Klaus Schulze was from the Kraut Rock scene, experimental electronics. The fifth member was the guy who organized this band ... Stomu Yamashta. He was a highly regarded percussionist and composer ... including Japanese theater. They put out 2 albums, and Steve sang on the first as he ventured off on his solo career. I highly recommend the song ... CROSSING THE LINE ... the 7:08 version Live from Paris.
This is from the album "Autumn '66" so Steve Winwood would have been 17 or 18 when he recorded this. Spencer Davis (guitar), brothers Steve Winwood (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Muff Winwood (bass guitar) and Pete York (drums) was the line up. Their repertoire was based on blues/rhythm and blues e.g. this track. They had four singles released to middling success from May 1964 to May 1965 but then hit number UK #1 in November 1965 with "Keep On Running" followed by "Somebody Help Me" (#1), "When I Come Home" (#12), "Gimme Some Loving"(#2) and "I'm A Man" (#9). At that point, early 1967, Stevie left to form Traffic. All of these tracks are bangers.
JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKER'S "CALIFORNIA" IT'S RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS "I LVE YOU MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW" KILLER SONG!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Steve Winwood was one of the forming members of The Spencer Davis Group and Traffic as well. Steve Winwood wrote I'm a Man that Chicago did a cover of. The Spencer Davis Group recorded it first in '69 I believe it was.
