I was 17 years old when this was released in 1976 and this song was all over the radio and it quickly became one of my all time favorite songs. I still love this. Thanks!
Lol. I was born in 1969 and the very first record single I bought was this. I Was about 8 years old and used my allowance to buy it. I loved it so much.
The Spinners are an American R&B vocal group from the 50's-70's during the Motown era. They had a lot of great songs such as "I'll Be Around", "That's What Girls Are Made For", "Love (I'm So Glad) I Found You", "I'll Always Love You", "Truly Yours", "It's A Shame", "We'll Have It Made", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)", "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music", "The Games People Play", etc. They had a big hit in 1974 with a collaboration with Dionne Warwick called "Then Came You".
Man, Biz...we had it all. Funk, soul, R & B, jazz, blues, rock-n-roll, soft rock, hard rock, acid rock, country rock, metal, progressive rock...you name it...we had it. Every time you turned on the radio, it was all brand new. It was like having multiple ear-gasms...every...single...day. If you haven't already...check out "It's A Shame" by these guys, and "Who's That Lady" by the great Isley Brothers. Peace! ✌😎
This wasn't the style of music I was into when a teen but this song and the Spinners were an exception. I really like these guys. This dude singing has style.
This song was written by producer Thom Bell + Singer-Songwriter Linda Creed. It's about Thom's son Mark Who was being teased by his Classmates 4 being Overweight. It was written to improve his Self image. The song evolved from The Fatman To the Rubberband man
The Spinners were one of the leading r&b groups of the seventies. I would recommend "It's A Shame" but you reacted to it already. So instead, check out "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "Then Came You", and "Games People Play" along with many others. "The Rubberband Man" was popular with the kids back when "I'm rubber, you're glue" was a thing on the playground. Rubber bands used to be much more common everyday items because they were used to wrap daily newspapers. Newspapers today, where they still exist, are a pale comparison to where they were back when this song was in the charts. Back when, Sunday editions came as thick as a phone book. But then a phone books are pretty much relics from the past as well. At any rate, the rubber bands that came with the newspaper piled up relatively quickly and a kid could amass a large collection of them in a few months. With that many you could wrap them around a core and try to turn them into a ball that actually bounced. But more often than not you could flick them at little brothers and sisters or what not. We used to attached clothes pins to a thin piece of wood to make rubber band guns that we would shoot at each other as we played cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, and various war games running around the yard and the neighborhood.
Wow, I had never heard the extended version before, and that was wild. The radio version was probably half that, but I'm SO GLAD you didn't do the Live version first. It's just way different, but still good, but the studio is light years better.
Now you're talking. This is the stuff I learned to dance to. They sing old school stuff like " Cupid " too. For real. Like 6th, 7th grade. I'm dating myself when I say the first dance I ever learned was the Freak by Le Chic. Awwwww Freak out. Good days Brother. Good to see just jamming along. God bless ya from Ky
I remember buying the 45 (vinyl single) when I was about 11 yrs old. I shared a bedroom and a stereo with my two older brothers and they hated it. The oldest brother was into KISS and hated any kind of dance music. A couple years later, KISS released a Disco song (I Was Made for Loving You) and I laughed my ass off!
Hard not to smile listening to this one. We had some good times to this back in the day. It was hard for me to listen to while driving, though, I'd be blasting down the road looking like you just did for 7 and a half minutes. LOL
Omigosh Biz, when the song was almost over, I turned to my daughter and said the exact same thing! I was like, “this is the song that doesn’t end …” then you said the exact same thing. This song was big in its day. I actually saw some people with giant rubber bands dancing and stretching the rubber bands between them, it was cool
Lord have mercy. Dude, after I watched your reaction I came across them doing this on Midnight Special. I think it3 worth checking out watching them live. It's only 4 minutes. And it's outta sight. Yeah. Peace
Biz be bringin da funk! First Fame now this. You'd probably like the shortened version more that's like 3 1/2 minutes long. That the one I have. Games People Play is another great one
Its proven scientifically that if you, as a band, get that booty on the dance floor, you will be a successful band. ❤❤❤❤❤ Get out that chair and show us those moves Biz. 😂😂
