Becoming the sister aircraft to the Hawker Hurricane, the Spitfire complemented the Hurricane’s mechanical simplicity by being a higher-maintenance but better-performing aircraft with superior specs. It is probably the most iconic British aircraft of all time.
In memory of Wing Commander Tom Neil, 1920 - 2018.

Magnificent aircraft so beautiful. I do feel that you need to do one for the unsung hero though, the hurricane. Without it we would have lost the battle of Britain. It took more kills than the spitfire against bombers and held it's own against the me109's too... Don't get me wrong I bloody love the spitfire (who couldn't) but the hurricane proved a very valuable asset to us

My favorite aircraft in the world. The best models were the MK V and MK IX . With powerful 20mm cannon alongside the .303s, and even more powerful versions of the Merlin ,it's the most beautiful machine ever created. I pray that I will one day have the honor to pilot a Spitfire.

If Mitchell had lived through the war and saw the development of the Spitfire rather than Joe Smith would he have made improvements differently to Joe Smith ? .
@mrrolandlawrence
@mrrolandlawrence 5 лет назад
interesting proposition. maybe he would have chosen a wide track under carriage? put the radiator in the prop wash so as to not overheat the engine while taxing and taking off? or simplified the barmy internal wing structures that look like someone had a fight with a notching machine? maybe the spitfire could have been ready earlier and more numerous raf service date? one could speculate....

@@mrrolandlawrence its over a year ago and just found your reply I was just thinking with the invention of the jet engine by Frank Whittle and wonder if R.J.Mitchel would have taken up the idea of building a Spitfire around Frank Whittle,s engine interesting idea may be fitted in side the fusalarge ?

The spitfire what a beautiful plane and the hurricane. The hurricane shot down more enemy aircraft then the spit. Every single man who thought in the battle of Britain should of been given after the war a free house and set up for life as a big thanks for great Britain. Brave men

Myth - the Spitfire won the Battle of Britton. Fact - the Hurricane aided by the Spitfire won the Battle of Britton. The Spitfire is a remarkable aircraft, the Hurricane in comparison is a basic work horse that got the job done but got none of the credit.

@@rodgeranderson4922 Just like your claim that the Hurricane won the Battle of Britain aided by the Spitfire, there are many if's. the fact is that the Spitfire had a higher kill ratio and lower loss ratio and more often took on the fighters which was the more dangerous job.

We have to think the Polish Air Force if it wasn't for them battle bitten would have been lost, they had more takedowns than any British squadrons. And their tactics of fighting was adopted by the rest of the Air Force.
@mrrolandlawrence

alas during the BoB the 303 squadron were flying exclusively hurricanes. only later in the war did they convert to spitfires when the hurricane was being removed from front line service.
@barrierodliffe4155

We have to thank all 2,900 pilots, if it wasn't for all of them the Battle of Britain would have been lost. It is the height of ignorance to claim that one nation did more than any other, in fact very insulting to all the other pilots.
@johnsweda2999
@johnsweda2999 3 года назад
@@barrierodliffe4155 of course all pilots did their part but I'm talking as a collective squadrons a lot of British pilots lost their lives before they changed their tactics and adopted the aggressive nature as the Polish Squadron to get up close and personal the facts speak for themselves, Americans were guilty of this as well lots of friendly fire lives lost because of high flying bombing scared of flack can't blame them tho that was the training they had at the time.
@barrierodliffe4155
@barrierodliffe4155 3 года назад
@@johnsweda2999 I wonder if so many British pilots lost their lives and changed to Polish tactics. From all I have seen the Polish tended to be rather aggressive but not as disciplined as British pilots. If the RAF losses were worse and suddenly got less you might be right but that is not how it happened.
