A note about this video: All the population figures are estimates. There is a wide margin of error, and they are intended to give a sense of scale only. There is also some controversy surrounding the development of the Plague before 1346. I've used the most widely accepted models/theories, but there are others.

India was many tiny kingdoms then and isolated from the world with exception to some small areas. The himalayas prevented frequent china cross border travel. Europe was heavily linked to china by this point as the two regions were the most developed so had the most movement of people. India was hit though and lost millions just a smaller percent of population overall than europe, middle east and china

You may have heard of the norwegian footbal player Ødegaard. This is a common surname here, and originates from the plague. After all was over, half of the local farms were deserted, and thus given the name "deserted farm". Norways goldeb imperial age ended with the Black Death, killing over 50% of its inhabitants and all of the church and elite/royalty. Following it was 500 years of foreign rule called the "dark night".

Some towns even vanished completely because literally everyone ended up dead. The horror that the population must have felt is unimaginable when about a third of the population died within a few years. No one could imagine a loss of life on such a scale in today's world. Ever since COVID-19 spread, people have been overreacting like the world is going to collapse. ITS MUTATED FLU FOR GODS SAKE, ITS NOTHING COMPARED TO BLACK DEATH, EVEN IF IT MUTATED TEN TIMES OVER I'm not saying that we should ignore everyone that died in the pandemic. Indeed, the current catastrophe is worse than the Great Recession and is confirmed by many sources. I am simply saying, stop overreacting, millions died in the current pandemic, tens of millions died in the Black Death, and the population was barely a billion back then.

I think there are recent studies that have the plague originating in Europe (Neolithic) and using the overland routes eventually found itself embedded in the marmot populations of East Asia. The first bout would be the Plagues of Justinian if I recall. Remarkably fascinating when you start deep diving into it.

It's actually been found in bronze age central Asians and it's possible that it spread to Europe even earlier with the invasion of the proto-indo-Europeans (Yamnaya/Corded ware culture) ca 3000 bc. If so, it would have acted as a biological weapon, partially explaining their rapid conquest of the continent from the local, most likely non-immune mediterranean farmer populations.

It would have been amazing if you could make something like this for the covid pandemic. We will end up with a lot more precise data compared to 700 years ago, but of course, some governments give singificantly less information, and the pandemic spreads globally so fast that you couldn't illustrate a geographic spread the same way. With all the data points to look through it would be a massive project, but it would be absolutely fascinating and extremely relevant.

RawR Jr. RoaR Nr.1 cannot be concluded from only one example. The Spanish Flu is also just one example of a pandemic, and it is thought to have originated in the USA. That doesn't mean that every pandemic comes from there, though. So neither does that mean that every pandemic comes from China.

Thank you for starting in China. Whenever people relate the tale of the Black Death, it's almost always a Eurocentric retelling, starting with the Genoese and Venetian ships that brought the plague-infested rats from the "mysterious Orient" to the Italian ports that first caught the pestilence. Here you provide a much broader and truer overview, with information on the Central Asian, Middle Eastern and North African cities and kingdoms affected and not only on Europe and its cities.
