I hadn’t heard this song for a very long time! I remembered it almost word for word. My mother always used to say, if children were taught in schools in song, they’d never forget! Hello from Yorkshire on September 7th 2024!
I remember hearing this when I was very young lad and falling in love with the song, we had the single in the house and I played the backside off it, wore it out. I still think it is the loveliest melody to which the words intertwine perfectly.
Tom Sprinfield wrote beautiful lyrical haunting songs. Island of Dreams. The Carnival is Over. The 60s songs were the pinnacle - meaningful and heartfelt. Yesterday. Bridge over troubled waters.Blowing in the Wind. Popular music is now so often just lound crashing noise minus meaning.
What a lovely song and what terrific harmony. First heard it in 1961 when I was at Kings College, Durham University, UK and as a poor student, I could not afford to buy the record. So I would thrill everytime I heard it on the radio. Now thanks to you kind post, I can hear it again and again, any time. Wonderful memories. Thanks
Its clips like this that make RU-vid very special. It's so good to see all these naturally great singers from the time when they really did shine and life was simple.
Not too sure about a "simple" life. Each one of these great singers and song-writers had their personal hell to go through. They didn't wallow in it but called on their resilience and self-belief and came out the other side of that hell.
@@kerrinorourke5914 Exactly so well put, artists of this & other eras also had their personal issues, however they we sensible enough to know to keep them personal & not roll them out in public . They knew that they were paid to sing or whatever & that is exactly what they did, they seemed to know how to use their talent to hide their grief/problems (well at least while in the public eye). For that alone they deserve the respect they received. Today's 'artists' seem to think it is part of their job to hang their dirty washing or whatever out for all & sundry to see... As if we are interested Duh! ! . Regards Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
Absolutely 💯.Only came to learn of him through Seekers . Brilliant composer and kind in leaving his money for today musicians to benefit in their struggles.
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY, HOW DID THEY DO THAT? THE SOUND TECH I MEAN, ALTHOUGH OBVIOUSLY, THEY WERE FANTASTIC SINGER;'S AND THEIR HARMONY FAULTLESS. I THINK IT SAD THOUGH, THAT DUSTY GAVE UP THIS LIFE, FOR THE MADNESS OF THE DRUG AND DRINK FILLED WORLD OF THE LATER SIXTIES, WHERE SHE LOST TRUE HAPPINESS.
Absolutely agree 100%. The difference is that these are genuine talented musicians whilst today's lot are thrown together by producers who base their focus more on image than actual musical talent. That said, there are some talented musicians around today but they tend to be less high profile and don't get into the Top 50 (not that the Top 50 is a worthwhile measure of anything these days).
What a beautiful composition sang with such eloquence, splendor, and perfect harmony, I can't speak highly enough of Dusty Springfield and her sheer talent but I'm not taking anything away from her brother's songwriting brilliance. I am 61 years old and this music will always live in my memory, it's as natural as bird song to me, I love it, it has a spirit and signature all of its own.
This song, by Tom Springfield, is beautiful and one of my all-time favorites. Love this clip- it's so simple, with no fancy choreography or any othe distractions. Perfect!
God, that is really very beautiful, very special. I've been in the music business for over 40 years now, never seen this video before, haven't heard the song in decades, and it has just blown me away. The musicality, professionalism and charisma of this is quite wonderful. To be able to produce such a sparkling and entertaining performance when technology and equipment was still fledgling says so much for all involved. My God, music today is dead, devoid of creativity and soul, when compared to the originality and freshness - and the sheer beauty - of these early performers. Thank you for the upload, it made my night
Great song, beautifully sung. From the days when songs had melody, not just rhythm, singers had great voices and harmonies were superb. When people ask what's gone wrong with today's music, they could learn a lot from watching a video like this.
+bingoace TO MUCH FALSEHOODS IN TODAYS OVER ELECTRONIC MUSIC, ITS NOT SINGING , OF COURSE THERE ARE SOME REAL SINGERS AROUND TODAY LIKE MILEY CYRUS WHO HAS A MARVELOUS VOICE, BUT THE SOUND OF THIS GROUP WHEN THINGS WEREN'T SO PLASTIC, LEAVES MY OLD HEART SINGIN!!! NOTHING IS AS GOOD .
Agreed. Music back then actually had soul and meaning. Nowadays, it's full of fake-butt 'singers' who rely on auto-tune/editing to sing about butts, sex and drugs.
+alfredagain You have to have an open mind , to enjoy music ALL TYPES OF MUSIC, if you don't your understanding may be fogged. But that's a misfortune I don't suffer.
This had a body handicap all she wanted was to have a boy friend like any young girl of her age but her father wAs over protective and would not allow this to be it broke her heart
Those were the days. We didn't know it then but we lived in an era of great musical talent. Not only that, but when you see how smartly dressed they are you realize how standards have gone to the dogs.
I was 13 and lived on a small island in the U.K. when this came out and have always loved it and went on to marvel at Dusty’s unique and beautiful voice ever after! A voice sadly missed but play her songs often❤️
8 years later, once again I am attracted to this lovely song sung by such talented singers. They broke onto the UK music scene in 1961 and I was enthralled. Today sixty years later, it still evokes beautiful memories of growing up in England, UK.
I agree with you totally. An era where people singers relied on their own ability , the richness of their voices along with simple musical backing. Rather magical isn't it... Cheers.. Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
Brilliant post !! Thank goodness that we still have footage like this preserved for us to enjoy in this day & age. Footage like this also provides a great learning tool for up-&-coming young talent, too. What an amazing trio this group was. This is a beautiful song .. written by Tom .. who in turn passed it on to his good friends, The Seekers, who went on to make it one of their best-ever songs & biggest hits ...
you can not vote this down, this was part of the great upsurge of british music, in the sixties the wonderful singer Dusty Springfield who went to be a big star, her brother Tom has written some very well known songs for international artists and we still appreciate that. God Bless All Music Lovers X
since discovering this vid, I come back to it time and again, for 2 years it has played in my head, I've posted it, sent to other friends, a true testament to the Splenda and Magic that once music was, and dusty, the very best female pop singer of the 60's, which means for all time,
What amuses me is the 52 down-votes. What, you go to all the trouble to find this song from before you were born, decide that you have the ability to make a judgement on the singing talent of Dusty Springfield, and then down-vote it? What did you think of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel? Would have been better as a couple of coats of magnolia?
For Fenn and Kub- isch: Are you guys not getting a little overwrought over people who did not like this video, for unexpressed reasons, pressing the thumbs down button? It's not like trolls who de- liberately personal ly attack someone who either likes or dislikes a song for the sole pur- pose of provoking an argument.(This is the actual defi- nition of a troll, so you have mischar acterized the people you have objected to as trolls.) Millions of people google videos every hour. Do you expect everyone to like this video just be- cause you do? I daresay the thumbs downs did not come from anyone who spent a lot of time track- ing down this video just to "hate" on Dusty Springfield. Com- paring a thumbs-down to an act of hatred is absurd. As is the compari- son of this song with Michaelangelo's artwork in the Cistene Chapel. As modest and rational a woman as Dusty Spring- field was, she would be the first person to agree with me if she could be brought back to life on this earth. This was much ado about nothing, and ironically it is you guys who appear to be the haters, although I attribute your be- havior more pro- bably to the pos- session of spoil- ed, intolerant child-like minds. Does this assessment make sense to anyone else? (From a 71 year-old Texan who gave this song a thumbs-up, mourned Dusty's tragic passing, & believes she is a woman to be ad- mired for all time.
I will leave aside for a moment the irony of being lectured on intolerance and child-mindedness by a Texan, and point out that I did not in fact, if you read my post carefully, compare this song directly with the work of the Renaissance master craftsman. I was comparing attitudes, the need of some people to down-vote a work they merely find not to their taste, when in my view this should be reserved for work which is identifiably defective, which this song clearly is not. You are of course free to disagree, until a guy I feel virtually certain you voted for finally silences all dissent.
This is my favourite song of all time because of what it means to me. I still remember listening this as a young primary school kid, it took my mind on a journey. It opened my mind to other possibilities that could be out there.
Dusty hopes we like it - and I certainly do. My Christmas present from my parents in 1962 was my first ever record player, a small battery operated thing, and this was one of the records I had to go with it - and it's still a fantastic song, performed superbly.
Yearning for a solo career... :--) She would have gotten it anyway, she was a too good singer for a trio. And the hair, o, the hair....and in later years; the gowns, o, the gowns...
I so glad somebody else feels that way. Thanks for reminding me of the feeling. (favorite Dusty lines: "bird on the wing" and "mad rushing crowd"). Thanks to brother Tom (on the right) who wrote the song for her.
This was in the charts in 1963, and my mother had it in her record collection. The Springfields recorded it first - I hadn't even realised that the Seekers, who I like also, had sung it. Which version you prefer depends on your emotional connection. Both groups were brilliant.
Hi Amy, Im 62 y/o and when I was young my mum/dad made me go up and sing that song....and to this day.....my kids and grandkids, stiil make me sing it!! :-) When its my turn to go......Im thinking "Forever Young" by Joan Baez
The guy on the right, Tom, (Dusty's brother) was a great composer. Some of his best: Georgy Girl, I'll Never Find Another You, A World Of Our Own...and more. But does anyone today even know the guy?
I just heard this for the first time since i was a spotty teenager...Dusty..YOUR VOICE..it's amazing! I'd forgotten just how good... and I sang with you and my bro' Paul (who's up there with you)..at Liverpool Empire Christmas Panto a million years ago ..... Barry (Ryan)xx
Perhaps somebody doesn't understand timing? Vital when you are close-harmony singing (and playing instruments live at the same time) I don't think it''s discomfort - just being alert as part of a trio, like any team - you gotta watch each other. There were no opportunities for re-record/ retake in those days. Superb. Love it. Many thanks for this gold-dust post.
I can remember as a youngster my old Dad (a musician himself), going around our house always singing songs by the Springfields and then later on by Dusty, now 50 years on I can look back and see that he was as much in love & besotted with Dusty as I am now and always have been, and I find myself today doing the exact same thing with my five year old nephew, the difference being, I can let him watch the video's. Thank you for the music Dusty R.I.P love & miss you Ray♥ X X X
First heard this performed live at the Airmans club at RAF Alconbury in the early sixtys. Dusty made you shiver hitting the notes at high in the sky. We had some top performers there. The club was widly known in the UK.-- Jay Reiter
This song was played a few weeks ago at my grandads funeral as it was one of his and my nannys favourite songs. I love this song too, I listen to it often because I miss him so much and I play it to remember saying goodbye to him at the funeral. Beautiful song. Xxx
I heard this on Radio 2 recently and it brought back great memories, I just had to hear it again and again, what a lovely sweet voice and a lovely sweet lady and a great performance from the 3 of them, sung live and perfect, lovely lyrics and such a fantastic live performance, thanks so much for posting this and reminding us of the Springfields
Such Talent combined with such simplicity. That is how it is done. No skimpy clothing required to produce work such as this.. Blows my mind for sure..Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
These guys were one of my favourite groups of the early sixties before the Beatles came along n British Invasion ‘ music changed then, Dusty has a great voice and the two guys harmonize well with her, this is best Springfield song, I wish I could just go back in time and stay there forever
Have loved this song for nearly 50 years! My brother Dennis bought it when I was young and played it non stop and the melody and words have lived in my memory ever since!
I remember this lovely song I was a young teenager , now 71 years old , and it always was a very uplifting song which once heard you can never forget , good old Dusty !
The Springfields were a world class act. Country and Western from England. They really looked like they had a ball when they sang on of Toms well-crafted songs. If they had fun we sure did.
As a very young PERSON this song was special to me. Dusty was one of the greatest, if not THE greatest female singer Britain produced. Thankyou for putting this on. !!
STC40 , I can see what you are saying , I see Judith Durham as a fabulous trained operatic voice ( which I believe she was ) perfect, controlled by her training just like a classical musician. I see Dusty Springfield as a fabulous natural voice, controlled only by the heart and soul and able to improvise.
