I lived in SoCal at the time this all happened and had mixed feelings about sending her so far from her home. But after all is said and done, I'm incredibly thankful she being looked after as well as she is.
aboat plane so far from water? yes, but as you said, there where going to scrap it? how signed up to that idea? but the building was only ever leashed why, I wonder what they are doing with it now, like it not really much use for anything else? anways it nise to see it being looked after
Howard Hughes was beyond a genius. He was a one of a kind man.If he was in his youth today can you imagine the things he would be able to engineer with today’s technology?
I also saw it when it shared the pier with the Queen Mary. Now both are gone. :( On the other hand, someone cares enough to keep them from being scrapped so I don't feel bad that I'd have to make separate trips if I wanted to visit either attraction in the future.
Not me it's that much further to. Drive well then again maybe it's better off with u up there it was going to be probably would have ended up as chips in a dump had u guys not taken it. The amount of development that probably will never be matched in pure skill as engineers with. Very little in knowledge of what is possible and what is not for them to build it and I believe it would have done exactly what it was designed for and Hughes knew it was a marvel . Very little in appreciation did people have in its extream feat of engineering and still until his death he cherished and protected the impossible feat he accomplished.im in awe of its capabilities .how many planes today could haul what it could and how many can take the forces of the water landings and even still yet be. Not made of much metals .insane.just like him (Howard) was. But still makes me laugh at the thought of it being just a bit below Boeing the competition. In its final landing both naval and aeronautical.
My grandpa helped build the dome in LB. I got to visit him while he was welding but the plane wasn’t in the dome yet. I was really young and don’t remember much of my visit but I do remember the inside of the dome was unbelievably huge.
Had the opportunity to see this aircraft in Long Beach. You were able to go inside of it and see just how immense it really was. Had WWll not ended when it did, the Hercules would have been a great asset.
My neighbor in Oregon City fished an guided on Willamette an Clackamas river's an was hired by this moving crew to guide river portions! Melvin was a great fisherman, logged each catch in receipt folders boxes!
Its cool going on carnival and you go on the ship through the domed hangar where it uses to be. People just walk through and im like i know what used to be here
This is a very interesting video about the H-4 Hercules and it's move to Evergreen Air Museum. I visited the Evergreen Air Museum June 20, 2015 I still have the general admission ticket! :)
Sad to see her go, it has a nice home now. Go see H1, enjoyed this video, made a lot of news here in LB. Lack of ticket viewers doomed her stay where she first flew.
Most people don't get it, i sure didn't.... But one day i put my eyeballs, which are in my face right on that thing and no words can prepare a person for what they are about to see before they walk in there. Then, you know, as if the size of the thing isn't mind bending enough, it flies! In the air....
Ian Stevenson Lol yeah, it is unfortunate. Allthough I wonder if, using modern materials, if there would be a way to construct a 1:1 scale working replica...
We had a huge Martin Mars seaplane here when SoCal was shopping for water dump aircraft for fires. Watched it takeoff, similar in size to H1, taxied out by Belmot pier, pointed west, took over a mile of sea surface to get takeoff speed & finally lifted off- ocean tides/ not bad in our breakwater protected port. It was a Sight to see. 🛫👀
Howard Hughes is my cousin. He'd be happy to know the plane is cared for and preserved. However, he fucking hated it being called by "that name". It's "The Hercules". The last person to call it "Spruce Goose" in his presence he grabbed by the throat, slammed into a wall, and then my cousin threw that person through a window that was not at ground level. That's called a "Flying Lesson" in my Father's side of my family, The Hughes Family. I can assure you that I have endured many "flying lessons" as a kid. Never piss us off.
I have this liberal friend who desperately wants to believe that wealth can not be created. They refuse to talk to anyone who they think is going to force them to confront the truth of the matter.
Carlo- Spare us the smug, potty mouth routine. You know it's true, the people who disliked this video likely did so because they know this plane was designed, paid for and built by a bunch of mostly white guys and Howard Hughes didn't like big government. The fact that you personally aren't one of the dislikes on this video changes nothing. You're probably no less of a racist, America hating bigot than the average Liberal.
Wow, this a lot of presumptuous projections that has literally nothing to do with aircraft or aviation. Can we not for once come together to appreciate a marvel of engineering, or is that also just some hippy dippy kumbaya politically correct liberal horseshit? The latter? Alright, you guys have a Merry Christmas anyways.
