@@MrLlama999 I have knives that cost more than my most exspensive AR15 with the scope and all the addons and i'm fine with that for what they are. For me some knives are tools and others are collectable art. That said I would never spend over 200 on this particular knife. I honestly probably wouldn't buy it at all.
@@little2826 I thought it was bad enough when I bought the Mcbee and Poochi, this knife style and look w/ titanium is right up my alley, they just didn't get the price correct
Thanks for the great review as always! For this knife and a few others, like the Sebenza, new iteration of the Slysz Bowie, and lots more, you’ve mentioned they compete with other knives in their price point and are not always worth it at that price compared to their competition. Have you done any videos where you do like your top knives at each price point, or else for such a knife, and the Sebenza for sure, what knives they would be competing with or even beat them at that price? I know you must get millions of requests, but I’d love to hear your thoughts if you get a chance. Thanks!!!
I absolutely love this knife. Just ordered one. Should be here tomorrow. 🤟 it’s a funky knife but not in a ridiculous way. Looks killer and I really like the Elk stamp on the opposite side. Can’t wait to have this in hand.
This ergonomically questionable, functionally dubious knife is just the next bad reason that the Slysz Bowie isn’t being produced. It’s all the same manufacturing capacity and knowhow, employed to make…this…instead. How did you not utterly pan it?
Nice fair review, for the people that like and want one I hope they can get one. The fact that its going to have a pretty niche market is probably another reason the price is what it is.
It sucks. All there is to it. If you like it gid bless. If you're willing to shell out 400 for it I sincerly hope you enjoy the hell out of it but for me it's a hard no and a why???
Comparing this to a Slysz Bowie is literally the only way the price seems reasonable to me. If the Slysz Bowie is appropriately priced at $400 (it's not), then this knife is a bargain for only $20 more.
I own more spydercos than any other brand and like a lot of what they are about as a company. That said Spyderco has gotten silly with their pricing. Not just on this knife. It’s even harder to swallow when you see what vendors will sell those same knives for once they are discontinued. As long as their customer base is happy to pay ever increasing prices for functionally indistinguishable variants of pm2 s and 3s more power to them I guess.
Nick, you should of at least mentioned the maker of the original designer... Kingdom Armory: David M. Rydbom... why not... or did i miss it, maybe. As for the price , wait five years.... maybe not so $ now... just saying.... if you did mention maker , my bad
I've handled the knife in person, and while it's decently solid, if feels more like a Hinderer than a Spyderco knife. Very bulky, very heavy, more designed to be a portable prybar than a slicing tool.
Actually in most normal pants the swedge projection just tucks in and it really does not take up as much space as you might think. Unless you have some sort of rigid material inside your pocket, but most pockets have a flexible inner material that just shifts around the “horn” of the knife and it doesn’t fit in a pocket any worse than most other knives. Comparing the price to that of a Techno 2 is also misleading. This has way more machining (contoured vs. flat and chamfered on the techno plus the ti backspacer and all the extra detail) and a milled titanium clip vs. a wire steel clip. A fancy pivot with collar is much more than the simple screw a T2 has. Then there’s the extra milling and material on the blade that adds cost. A significant amount of detail and work went into this as compared to the rather simple details on a Techno. It is a high price, but if you really add up everything then it starts making a bit more sense. It would be nice to see Spyderco chill out with their prices but, thats also just how life is, everything goes up in price every year.
Back here again. I have it sind a while now and I bought it for Design even if I tought its mind of ugly. Just like the spydiechef. Why I'm back here. Its one of my favourite knives I had so far. Beside that I wanted to tank you for bringing me awesome content and the still best reviews out there
I love mine the price really did hurt and I agree with Nick, it's not ergonomic and the screws are eh, otherwise I think it's sweet! When I first saw it I wanted it so bad, for whatever reason I love the design and the action is excellent.
I do love the design, but I like to play the game of naming a price I’d pay, and if it’s within that price I’ll consider buying it. The price I set for this was $260. I was a bit off…
I agree that the Stovepipe is a polarizing design. But, even though this knife isn’t for me, I like that it is causing reactions and is in line with Spyderco occasional oddball off-the-wall design embrace. What’s worse than terrible? Mediocre. Too many knife designs these days are instantly forgettable.
I am expecting this folder on Monday, Oct. 3. Your review Nic, clinch it for me. It's about aesthetics. I will probably anodize the handles, one side one color, the other side another color. ( 9- volt batteries & baking soda thing.) Thank you, as a patron, for my continuous satisfaction with your reviews and for your "character." Mitch___ Oh, my last purchase was a Norseman which I removed the purple ano for a Fuschia show side and a Green lock side. Eh?
As everyone has said, kinda neat knife, but wow, the price. Compared to a sharp by design production knife which costs about the same or even less for some versions, the stovepipe is a terrible option. Unless you love the design, as you’ve stated.
No thanks on this knife. Is there an actual reason for the price? Is it the materials? The special design? WHY is it so expensive? I simply don't get it.
I bought the stovepipe before Nick's review because I knew I wanted it. It's not a practical EDC but I wanted it for my collection so I'm ok with price. My taste in knives diverge from Nick's but his reviews are always honest even if I disagree with some points.
Don’t know exactly what it is, but I really love this knife. It’s so unique and comfortable. If you can find it a little under retail, buy it, you won’t be disappointed.
Spyderco has paid their dos over the years. They've been around forever, and they've given so much to the knife world. But that is the stupidest looking knife I've ever seen. And their prices this year are ridiculous. The spydiechef is 35$ more then it was this time last year.
8:50 at the video, not really been listening to Nick for the last two minutes, mostly looking at the knife. The funny thing is that when i first saw this design i was indifferent, with a slight inclination to 'ugly'. Since then, it has really grown on me....and yes, as you have guessed i just pulled the trigger!
So, the hard detent transition on closing the knife has improved in short order, and I suspect it will further improve with more "use." Oh, and no ano. treatment here - not with this one.
Thanks Nick! Good grief Spyderco have strayed a looong way off track, haven’t they? A design that will appeal to only a small sector of the market, at a price even less will be willing to pay. They should have named it the Spyderco WTF.
Other than the price, this knife is a textbook example of why I absolutely love Spyderco, and I don't like the knife at all. I don't let the fact that I don't personally like it stop me from appreciating that it exists.
@@Jmon808 I think the Roc was their attempt at a cash grab from the cleaver trend. Call me gullible, but this knife seems more like a genuine attempt to make a more accessible version of a David Rydbom design.
@@RU-vid-Censorship-Police 140 might be realistic remember it's an Asian made knife the whole reason for outsourcing some of their production to Asia is to save money. There are plenty of Spyderco Knives made in the United States out of some of their more high-end steals that don't come up near that price.
@@davidmcguire6043 @David Mcguire asia is not asia, taiwan is not china. remember that a typical we knife with the same materials comes in at 180+ and these are not as well made and not nearly as detailed in terms of milling. 420 is absolutely too high (crazy high i'd say), but expecting this kind of quality and materials for 140 is unrealistic for any company in any country.
I wonder how much money Shabazz has made for spyderco over the years. Personally, I think that gives him a special privilege to RAKE THEM OVER THE COALS for the typical spyderco shit. Stuff we complain about ALL THE TIME and particularly the spydie-tax. It’s time to hold them accountable. I seriously think that Eric glesser is on the 5 year plan of selling the company. What. Even. Is. This?! Sprint runs in silly steels and bad, “polarizing” designs. That’s about all they’re doing. It’s almost like “let’s make up for our lack of recent innovation in one knife by making it as dumb as possible. Hey, at least it’s not another sage variant, right?”
For real. Like what is this. This is the most unappealing knife ever. I’m honestly surprised at the amount of people buying this thing. You have to be bored with every other $400 knife to pull the trigger on this
It’s funny I really thought these would sell better. They’ve stayed in stock at a lot of popular retailers. It’s a bit high I’m really on the fence I love the design but that price is xm18 CRK territory
I thought it was AdV. Looks like his work. A lot. In any case, this is a mistake for Spyderco, IMO. Too expensive, not very interesting (might as well buy an AdV) and not at all what I want to see from Spyderco. What I'd like to see from them is new in house designs, better materials, and better prices. Do something new with the ball lock. Stop using VG10 when you're asking cpm154 and s30v (or better) prices.
I am going on 2 weeks carrying mine and I have to say I’m happy. Not sure I understand folks griping about the price. If it had Strider or Hinderer on the blade then folks wouldn’t have a problem with it. Those are also production knives that command stupid prices.
it reminds me of those tacticool/mall ninja style knives, except for the price point of course. $420 is a fun amount to laugh at cause "heh thats the weed number!" but for a knife like that... ill just get the one at the mall for $10 and throw it off a building if i wanted to throw cash away
Looks like a purpose-built cigar cutter and pipe packer. I don't smoke either but like it very much, just not $420 much. It looks like something that would happily sit in a box waiting for the tobacco twitch to prevail.
I have a new video idea :) You should consider blind folding yourself and then while blind, handle a knife you've never handled before and try to guess the price of the knife.
I like the design, but yeah, it's not a price point I'm willing to pay. The so-so ergos and bulky frame make it even less attractive. Still, it's cool they're experimenting with something new, so that's good to see.
Some time ago you announced that you'd change your background (the black surface), and showed us the new one. It seems though that you kept the same, what happened?
I can get a Protech Malibu and a Para 3 lightweight with enough left over for a nice dinner for what this thing costs. This is definitely a SpyderNO for me.
I hate it i hate it i hate it! Had to watch it cause Nick you're a gem but wow. My gosh. I love the yojimbo, yojimbo2 yojumbo all those but this thing is well about as interesting as a stovepipe.
I love the knife, glad they are doing a cool new design, something different for them at least, other than another damn PM2/Para 3. I’m so tired of the same shit made over and over. Give me a time peace, this does that. I pretty much only buy SpyderCo’s so stuff like this is, the Tuff, Volpe, Battleship, Rubicon, are very cool. Price tag is to high for me at the moment though, but hey “ I did that”.
A noteworthy iteration saddled with an absurd price point. Don’t tell me it’s not a $$$ grab aimed directly at the Collector sector. Color me disinterested. :-(
The price point seems off for the actual utility. Not nice enough for a safe queen, but way too spendy for a work knife when there are comparable options for a lot less.
At that price and design you have to really love it to check it out. Someone on the fence about the design prob will not bother because of the price. Me .. I’ll pass on the rhino horn.
I like the knife even though it looks like they’re going for the ugliest knife contest but I think what is the major hold back as the price is ridiculous
I’d have gotten it for $350, even $375. But over $400? I just can’t. If it were a bit bigger due to bigger hands, yes, but at that size in particular, no. I love the idea of what is more or less a steampunkish, Ti framelock Yojimbo, but I just can’t justify the price at that size to myself. I love the looks of it, and who knows if they go on sale for $375? But for now…no.
great video- spot on - Bill the butcher did a decent job - I cant believe i brought this knife and love it. Hot spots, over heavy, over priced, zero sense but i do enjoy it.
Why does spyderco hollow grind everything besides Rassenti designs (which arguably need one to cut fairly well). Main reason I went with a custom over the Paysan from spyderco.
You should check out the QSP penguin. The best budget sheepsfoot folder (which I categorize as anything under 50 bucks) that really delivers both aesthetically & functionally.
